A dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) generated by flowing helium between the parallel-plate electrodes of an open air reactor has been characterized using time resolved optical and electrical measurements. A sinusoidal voltage of up to 5 kV (peak to peak) of frequencies from 3 to 50 kHz has been applied to the discharge electrodes. The helium flow rate is varied up to 10 litre min(-1). The adjustment of flow rate allows the creation of uniform DBDs with optimized input power equal to 120 +/- 10 mW cm(-3). At flow rates from 4 to 6 litre min(-1) a uniform DBD is obtained. The maxima in the line intensities of N-2(+) and helium at 391.4 nm and 706.5 nm, respectively, 2 under those conditions indicate the importance of helium metastables and He-2(+) in sustaining such a discharge. The power efficiency and discharge 2 current show maxima when the DBD In He/air is uniform. The gas temperature during the discharge has been measured as 360 +/- 20 K.

The density of metastable helium atoms in a dielectric barrier discharge operating in helium with some impurities present has been measured using laser-collisional-induced fluorescence and absorption techniques. Time-resolved measurements indicate that helium metastables contribute to the production of impurity ions, in this case N-2(+), in the postdischarge current phase of a glow discharge. In our particular discharge environment, the helium metastable density is (1.5+/-1.4)x10(10) cm(-3), a result consistent with failure to observe absorption by metastables in a multipass absorption measurement. Collisional effects can have strong influences on the population densities of excited states in gas discharges at elevated pressure. The knowledge of the pertinent collisional coefficient describing the depopulation of a specific level (quenching coefficient) is, therefore, important for plasma diagnostics and simulations. Phase resolved optical emission spectroscopy (PROES) applied to a capacitively coupled rf discharge excited with a frequency of 13.56 MHz in hydrogen allows the measurement of quenching coefficients for emitting states of various species, particularly of noble gases, with molecular hydrogen as a collision partner. Quenching coefficients can be determined subsequent to electron-impact excitation during the short field reversal phase within the sheath region from the time behavior of the fluorescence. The PROES technique based on electron-impact excitation is not limited â?? in contrast to laser techniques â?? by optical selection rules and the energy gap between the ground state and the upper level of the observed transition. Measurements of quenching coefficients and natural fluorescence lifetimes are presented for several helium (3 1S,4 1S,3 3S,3 3P,4 3S), neon (2p1 ,2p2 ,2p4 ,2p6), argon (3d2 ,3d4 ,3d18 and 3d3), and krypton (2p1 ,2p5) states as well as for some states of the triplet system of molecular hydrogen.

Magnetic neutral loop discharges (NLDs) can be operated at significantly lower pressures than conventional radio-frequency (rf) inductively coupled plasmas (ICPs). These low pressure conditions are favourable for technological applications, in particular anisotropic etching. An ICP–NLD has been designed providing excellent diagnostics access for detailed investigations of fundamental mechanisms. Spatially resolved Langmuir probe measurements have been performed in the plasma production region (NL region) as well as in the remote application region downstream from the NL region. Depending on the NL gradient two different operation modes have been observed exhibiting different opportunities for control of plasma uniformity. The efficient operation at comparatively low pressures results in ionization degrees exceeding 1%. In this regime neutral dynamics has to be considered and can influence neutral gas and process uniformity. Neutral gas depletion through elevated gas temperatures and high ionization rates have been quantified. At pressures above 0.1 Pa, gas heating is the dominant depletion mechanism. At lower pressures neutral gas is predominantly depleted through high ionization rates and rapid transport of ions by ambipolar diffusion along the magnetic field lines. Non-uniform profiles of the ionization rate can, therefore, result in localized neutral gas depletion and non-uniform processing. We have also investigated the electron dynamics within the radio-frequency cycle using phase resolved optical emission spectroscopy and Thomson scattering. In these measurements electron drift phenomena along the NL torus have been identified.

Micro plasmas operated at ambient pressure with dimensions of the confining geometry in the order of a few ten micrometers to a millimeter are actually in the focus of interest due to the broad regime of applicability they offer and due to a similarly broad range of open physical questions. Here we present optical measurements within the discharge core and the effluent region of an especially developed micro discharge jet. To get an understanding of the complex system of this discharge it is important to analyse transport phenomena of energy and particles within both parts of the discharge by various highly sophisticated diagnostics. As a consequence of the limited access and the dimensions of the micro discharge most of these diagnostics are optical. Here we present diagnostics applied to determine spatially resolved absolute atomic oxygen densities as the most reactive constituent of the effluent, density maps of ozone as final reaction product of the gas chemical chain induced by the discharge and phase resolved optical emission spectroscopy yielding insight into the excitation dynamics of the discharge. The dynamics of high energetic electrons (>= 11.7 eV) in a modified industrial confined dual-frequency capacitively coupled RF discharge (Exelan, Lam Research Inc.), operated at 1.937 MHz and 27.118 MHz, is investigated by means of phase resolved optical emission spectroscopy. Operating in a He-O-2. plasma with small rare gas admixtures the emission is measured, with one-dimensional spatial resolution along the discharge axis. Both the low and high frequency RF cycle are resolved. The diagnostic is based on time dependent measurements of the population densities of specifically chosen excited rare gas states. A time dependent model, based on rate equations, describes the dynamics of the population densities of these levels. Based on this model and the comparison of the excitation of various rare gas states, with different excitation thresholds, time and space resolved electron temperature, propagation velocity and qualitative electron density as well as electron energy distribution functions are determined. This information leads to a better understanding of the dual-frequency sheath dynamics and shows, that separate control of ion energy and electron density is limited.

Spatial structures of plasma parameters in a radio-frequency inductively coupled magnetic neutral loop discharge are investigated under various parameter variations using spatially resolved Langmuir probe measurements. A strong coupling between the plasma production region, in the neutral loop (NL) plane, and the axially remote substrate region is observed. The two regions are connected through the separatrices and therefore, spatial profiles in the substrate region are strongly influenced by the plasma production region and the structure of the separatrices. The electron temperature in the plasma production region peaks in the centre of the NL while the maximum in electron density is shifted radially inwards due to diffusion. Details of the structures in both regions, the production region and the substrate region, are determined through the position of the NL and the gradient of the inhomogeneous magnetic field around the NL confinement region. Parameter combinations are found providing higher plasma densities and better uniformity than in common inductively coupled plasmas without applying an additional magnetic field. The uniformity can be further improved using temporal variations of the magnetic field structure.
