We assess the effects of a realistic intrinsic model for imperfections in cluster states by introducing noisy cluster states and characterizing their role in the one-way computational model. A suitable strategy to counter-affect these non-idealities is represented by the use of small clusters, stripped of any redundancy, which leads to the search for compact schemes for one-way quantum computation. In light of this, we quantitatively address the behavior of a simple four-qubit cluster which simulates a controlled-NOT under the influences of our model for decoherence. Our scheme can be particularly useful in an all-optical setup and the strategy we address can be directly applied in those, experimental situations where small cluster states can be constucted.

The electron beam ions traps (EBITs) are widely used to study highly charged ions (HCIs). In an EBIT, a high energy electron beam collides with atoms and ions to generate HCIs in the trap region. It is important to study the physics in the trap. The atomic processes, such as electron impact ionisation (EI), radiative recombination (RR), dielectronic recombination (DR) and charge exchange (CX), occur in the trap and numerical simulation can give some parameters for design, predict the composition and describe charge state evolution in an EBIT [Phys. Rev. A 43 (199 1) 4861]. We are presently developing a new code, which additionally includes a description of the overlaps between the ion clouds of the various charge-states. It has been written so that it can simulate experiments where various machine parameters (e.g. beam energy and current) can vary throughout the simulation and will be able to use cross- sections either based on scaling laws or derived from atomic structure calculations. An object-oriented method is used in developing the new software, which is an efficient way to organize and write code. (C) 2003 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

A computer code has been developed to simulate and study the evolution of ion charge states inside the trap region of an electron beam ion trap. In addition to atomic physics phenomena previously included in similar codes such as electron impact ionization, radiative recombination, and charge exchange, several aspects of the relevant physics such as dielectronic recombination, ionization heating, and ion cloud expansion have been included for the first time in the model. The code was developed using object oriented concepts with database support, making it readable, accurate, and well organized. The simulation results show a good agreement with various experiments, and give useful information for selection of operating conditions and experiment design.

Microstructure, tensile properties and fractography have been examined in the oil-quenched samples of a low-alloy ultrahigh strength 4340 steel. Intergranular fracture was revealed to locate at the fracture origin. However, neither the quenched Charpy V-notched impact samples nor the tempered tensile samples showed such intergranular fracture behavior. The effects of loading rate and precipitation are discussed.

Highly efficient In2O3-Co3O4 catalysts were prepared for ultralow-temperature CO oxidation by simultaneously tuning the CO adsorption strength and oxygen activation over a Co3O4 surface, which could completely convert CO to CO2 at temperatures as low as -105 degrees C compared to -40 degrees C over pure Co3O4, with enhanced stability.

The crucial roles of the coverage of surface free sites in determining catalytic activity trend are quantitatively addressed with the help of density functional theory and microkinetics. First, by analyzing activity trends of NO oxidation catalyzed by Ru, Rh, Pd, Os, Ir, and Pt surfaces with full kinetic considerations, we identify that the activity trend is in general determined by the competition between the reaction barrier and the coverage of surface free sites. Second, since the dissociation of many important molecules, such as the dissociation of N(2), O(2), and CO, follows the same Bronsted-Evans-Polanyi relationship, the coverage of surface free sites is usually a decisive term that affects the overall activity. Third, an equation is derived for the coverage of surface free sites and it is found that the coverage of surface free sites contains not only all the key thermodynamic parameters but also all the kinetic properties in the catalytic system.
