The results of PVT measurements of the liquid phase within the temperature range of (298 to 393) K and up to 35 MPa are presented for some aliphatic esters. Measurements were made by means of a vibrating-tube densimeter, model DMA 512P from Anton Parr. The calibration of the densimeter was performed with water and n-heptane as reference fluids. The experimental PVT data have been correlated by a Tait equation. This equation gives excellent results when used to predict the density of the esters using the method proposed by Thomson et al. (AIChE J. 1982, 28, 671-676). Isothermal compressibilities, isobaric expansivities, thermal pressure coefficients, and changes in the isobaric heat capacity have been calculated from the volumetric data.

The ionic liquid 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium bis{(trifluoromethyl)sulfonyl}amide ([C(2)mim][NTf2]) was tested as solvent for the separation of aromatic and aliphatic hydrocarbons containing 7 or 8 carbon atoms (the C-7- and C-8-fractions). The liquid-liquid equilibria (LLE) of the ternary systems (heptane + toluene + [C(2)mim][NTf2]) and (octane + ethylbenzene + [C(2)mim][NTf2]), at 25 degrees C, were experimentally determined. The performance of the ionic liquid as the solvent in such systems was evaluated by means of the calculation of the solute distribution ratio and the selectivity. The results were compared to those previously reported for the extraction of benzene from its mixtures with hexane by using the same ionic liquid, therefore analysing the influence of the size of the hydrocarbons. It was found that the ionic liquid is also good for the extraction of C-7- and C-8- fraction aromatic compounds, just a greater amount of ionic liquid being needed to perform an equivalently efficient separation than for the C-6-fraction. It is also discussed how [C(2)mim][NTf2] performs comparably better than the conventional solvent sulfolane. The original 'Non-Random Two-Liquid' (NRTL) equation was used to adequately correlate the experimental LLE data.

Amphibian skin secretions contain a plethora of pharmacologically-active substances and represent established sources of bioactive peptides, including tachykinins. Tachykinins are one of the most widely-studied peptide families in animals and are found in neuroendocrine tissues from the lowest vertebrates to mammals. They are characterized by the presence of a highly-conserved C-terminal pentapeptide amide sequence motif (-FXGLM-amide) that also constitutes the bioactive core of the peptide. Amidation of the C-terminal methioninyl residue appears to be mandatory in the expression of biological activity. Here, we describe the isolation, characterization and molecular cloning of a novel tachykinin named ranachensinin, from the skin secretion of the Chinese brown frog, Rana chensinensis. This peptide, DDTSDRSN QFIGLM-amide, contains the classical C-terminal pentapeptide amide motif in its primary structure and an Ile (I) residue in the variable X position. A synthetic replicate of ranachensinin, synthesized by solid-phase Fmoc chemistry, was found to contract the smooth muscle of rat urinary bladder with an EC50 of 20.46 nM. However, in contrast, it was found to be of low potency in contraction of rat ileum smooth muscle with an EC50 of 2.98 µM. These data illustrate that amphibian skin secretions continue to provide novel bioactive peptides with selective effects on functional targets in mammalian tissues.

In a recent article (J. Am. Chem. Soc. 2011, 133, 20186) we investigated the initial spatial distribution of dry excess electrons in a series of room-temperature ionic liquids (RTILs). Perhaps unexpectedly, we found that in some alkylammonium-based systems the excess negative charge resided on anions and not on the positive cations. Following on these results, in the current paper we describe the time evolution of an excess electronic charge introduced in alkylammonium- and pyrrolidinium-based ionic liquids coupled with the bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)amide ([TfN]) anion. We find that on a 50 fs time scale an initially delocalized excess electron localizes on a single [TfN] anion which begins a fragmentation process. Low-energy transitions have a very different physical origin on the several femtoseconds time scale when compared to what occurs on the picosecond time scale. At time zero, these are intraband transitions of the excess electron. However after 40 fs when the excess electronic charge localizes on a single anion, these transitions disappear, and the spectrum is dominated by electron-transfer transitions between the fragments of the doubly charged breaking anion. © 2013 American Chemical Society.

Organic solvents, such as cyclohexane, cyclohexene, methylcyclohexane, benzene and toluene, are widely used as both reagents and solvents in industrial processes. Despite the ubiquity of these liquids, the local structures that govern the chemical properties have not been studied extensively. Herein, we report neutron diffraction measurements on liquid cyclohexane, cyclohexene, methylcyclohexane, benzene and toluene at 298 K to obtain a detailed description of the local structure in these compounds. The radial distribution functions of the centres of the molecules, as well as the partial distribution functions for the double bond for cyclohexene and methyl group for methylcyclohexane and toluene have been calculated. Additionally, probability density functions and angular radial distribution functions were extracted to provide a full description of the local structure within the chosen liquids. Structural motifs are discussed and compared for all liquids, referring specifically to the functional group and aromaticity present in the different liquids.

Abstract The development of high voltage electrolytes is one of the key aspects for increasing both energy and power density of electrochemical double layer capacitors (EDLCs). The usage of blends of ionic liquids and organic solvents has been considered as a feasible strategy since these electrolytes combine high usable voltages and good transport properties at the same time. In this work, the ionic liquid 1-butyl-1-methylpyrrolidinium bis{(trifluoromethyl)sulfonyl}imide ([Pyrr14][TFSI]) was mixed with two nitrile-based organic solvents, namely butyronitrile and adiponitrile, and the resulting blends were investigated regarding their usage in electrochemical double layer capacitors. Both blends have a high electrochemical stability, which was confirmed by prolonged float tests at 3.2 V, as well as, good transport properties. In fact, the butyronitrile blend reaches a conductivity of 17.14 mS·cm−1 and a viscosity of 2.46 mPa·s at 20 °C, which is better than the state-of-the-art electrolyte (1 mol·dm−3 of tetraethylammonium tetrafluoroborate in propylene carbonate).

Electrochemical double layer capacitors (EDLCs), also known as supercapacitors, are promising energy storage devices, especially when considering high power applications [1]. EDLCs can be charged and discharged within seconds [1], feature high power (10 kW·kg-1) and an excellent cycle life (>500,000 cycles). All these properties are a result of the energy storage process of EDLCs, which relies on storing energy by charge separation instead of chemical redox reactions, as utilized in battery systems. Upon charging, double layers are forming at the electrode/electrolyte interface consisting of the electrolyte’s ions and electric charges at the electrode surface. In state-of-the-art EDLC systems activated carbons (AC) are used as active materials and tetraethylammonium tetrafluoroborate ([Et4N][BF4]) dissolved in organic solvents like propylene carbonate (PC) or acetonitrile (ACN) are commonly used as the electrolyte [2]. These combinations of materials allow operative voltages up to 2.7 V - 2.8 V and an energy in the order of 5 Wh·kg-1[3]. The energy of EDLCs is dependent on the square of the operative voltage, thus increasing the usable operative voltage has a strong effect on the delivered energy of the device [1]. Due to their high electrochemical stability, ionic liquids (ILs) were thoroughly investigated as electrolytes for EDLCs, as well as, batteries, enabling high operating voltages as high as 3.2 V - 3.5 V for the former [2]. While their unique ionic structure allows the usage of neat ILs as electrolyte in EDLCs, ILs suffer from low conductivity and high viscosity increasing the intrinsic resistance and, as a result, a lower power output of the device. In order to overcome this issue, the usage of blends of ionic liquids and organic solvents has been considered a feasible strategy as they combine high usable voltages, while still retaining good transport properties at the same time.In our recent work the ionic liquid 1-butyl-1-methylpyrrolidinium bis{(trifluoromethyl)sulfonyl}imide ([Pyrr14][TFSI]) was combined with two nitrile-based organic solvents, namely butyronitrile (BTN) and adiponitrile (ADN), and the resulting blends were investing regarding their usage in electrochemical double layer capacitors [4,5]. Firstly, the physicochemical properties were investigated, showing good transport properties for both blends, which are similar to the state-of-the-art combination of [Et4N][BF4] in PC. Secondly, the electrochemical properties for EDLC application were studied in depth revealing a high electrochemical stability with a maximum operative voltage as high as 3.7 V. In full cells these high voltage organic solvent based electrolytes have a good performance in terms of capacitance and an acceptable equivalent series resistance at cut-off voltages of 3.2 and 3.5 V. However, long term stability tests by float testing revealed stability issues when using a maximum voltage of 3.5 V for prolonged time, whereas at 3.2 V no such issues are observed (Fig. 1).Considering the obtained results, the usage of ADN and BTN blends with [Pyrr14][TFSI] in EDLCs appears to be an interesting alternative to state-of-the-art organic solvent based electrolytes, allowing the usage of higher maximum operative voltages while having similar transport properties to 1 mol∙dm-3 [Et4N][BF4] in PC at the same time.

Poly-L-Lactide is a bioresorbable polymer which degrades through hydrolysis of its ester linkage influenced by initial molecular weight and degree of crystallinity. Polymers belonging to the aliphatic polyester family currently represent the most attractive group of polymers that meet the medical and physical demands for safe clinical applications. Compression moulded PLLA pellets were produced as rods, sterilized and degraded both in vitro and in vivo (sub-dermal implantation model). The material molecular weight, crystallinity, mechanical strength and thermal properties were evaluated. In both in vitro and in vivo environments, degradation proceeded at the same rate and followed the general sequence of aliphatic polyester degradation, ruling out enzymes accelerating the degradation rate in vivo. By 44 weeks duration of implantation the PLLA rods were still biocompatible, before any mass loss was observed.

Mixtures of cysteine, reducing sugar (xylose or glucose), and starch were extrusion cooked using feed pH values of 5.5, 6.5, and 7.5 and target die temperatures of 120, 150, and 180 degreesC. Volatile compounds were isolated by headspace trapping onto Tenax and analyzed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. Eighty and 38 compounds, respectively, were identified from extrudates prepared using glucose and xylose. Amounts of most compounds increased with temperature and pH. Aliphatic sulfur compounds, thiophenes, pyrazines, and thiazoles were the most abundant chemical classes for the glucose samples, whereas for xylose extrudates highest levels were obtained for non-sulfur-containing furans, thiophenes, sulfur-containing furans, and pyrazines. 2-Furanmethanethiol and 2-methyl-3-furanthiol were present in extrudates prepared using both sugars, but levels were higher in xylose samples. The profiles of reaction products were different from those obtained from aqueous or reduced-moisture systems based on cysteine and either glucose or ribose.

Thua nao, a traditional, proteolytic, fermented soybean condiment of northern Thailand, was prepared from cooked whole soybeans by natural flora fermentation. The microbial flora during the fermentation was dominated by Bacillus species. The formation of volatile compounds during the fermentation was studied. In addition, the volatile compounds of two samples of commercial dried thua nao and two samples of commercial Japanese natto were analysed. Fermentation led to a large increase in the concentration of total volatile compounds, from 35 mug kg(-1) wet weight in cooked soybeans to 3500 mug kg(-1) wet weight in 72h fermented material. The major volatile compounds in fermented beans were 3-hydroxybutanone (acetoin), 2-methlybutanoic acid, pyrazines, dimethyl disulphide and 2-pentylfuran. Sun drying of 72 h fermented material resulted in the loss of 65% of total volatiles, including important aroma compounds. The commercial dried thua nao samples had low concentrations of total volatile compounds (380 mug kg(-1) wet weight). It is suggested that improved drying/preservation methods are needed to retain aroma compounds in the traditional products. The natto samples were devoid of aldehydes, aliphatic acids and esters, and sulphur compounds, whereas the thua nao samples contained a diversity of these compounds. Previous investigators have reported these compounds in natto and it is not possible to suggest the existence of systematic differences between the volatile compounds in traditional thua nao prepared with an undefined, mixed microbial flora and those in natto fermented with Bacillus subtilis. The carbazole moiety is a component of many important pharmaceuticals including anticancer and anti-HIV agents and is commonly utilized in the production of modern polymeric materials with novel photophysical and electronic properties. Simple carbazoles are generally produced via the aromatization of the respective tetrahydrocarbazole (THCZ). In this work, density functional theory calculations are used to model the reaction pathway of tetrahydrocarbazole aromatization over Pd(111). The geometry of each of the intermediate surface species has been determined and how each structure interacts with the metal surface addressed. The reaction energies and barriers of each of the elementary surface reactions have also been calculated, and a detailed analysis of the energetic trends performed. Our calculations have shown that the surface intermediates remain fixed to the surface via the aromatic ring in a manner similar to that of THCZ. Moreover, the aliphatic ring becomes progressively more planer with the dissociation of each subsequent hydrogen atom. Analysis of the reaction energy profile has revealed that the trend in reaction barriers is determined by the two factors: (i) the strength of the dissociating ring-H bond and (ii) the subsequent gain in energy due to the geometric relaxation of the aliphatic ring. We report on the synthesis and biological evaluation of a focussed library of N-alpha mercaptoamide containing dipeptides as inhibitors of the zinc metallopeptidase Pseudomonas aeruginosa elastase (LasB, EC 3.4.24.26). The aim of the study was to derive an inhibitor profile for LasB with regard to mapping the S´1 binding site of the enzyme. Consequently, a focussed library of 160 members has been synthesised, using standard Fmoc-solid phase methods (on a Rink-amide resin), in which a subset of amino acids including examples of those with basic (Lys, Arg), aromatic (Phe, Trp), large aliphatic (Val, Leu) and acidic (Asp, Glu) side-chains populated the P´2 position of the inhibitor sequence and all 20 natural amino acids were incorporated, in turn, at the P´1 position. The study has revealed a preference for aromatic and/or large aliphatic amino acids at P´1 and a distinct bias against acidic residues at P´2. Ten inhibitor sequences were discovered that exhibited sub to low micromolar Ki values.

Tachykinins are among the most widely-studied families of regulatory peptides characterized by a highly-conserved C-terminal -Phe-X-Gly-Leu-Met.amide motif, which also constitutes the essential bioactive core. The amphibian skin has proved to be a rich source of these peptides with physalaemin from the skin of Physalaemus fuscomaculatus representing the archetypal aromatic tachykinin (X = Tyr or Phe) and kassinin from the skin of Kassina senegalensis representing the archetypal aliphatic tachykinin in which X = Val or Ile. Despite the primary structures of both mature peptides having been known for at least 30 years, neither the structures nor organizations of their biosynthetic precursors have been reported. Here we report the structure and organization of the biosynthetic precursor of kassinin deduced from cDNA cloned from a skin secretion library. In addition, a second precursor cDNA encoding the novel kassinin analog (Thr2, Ile9)-kassinin was identified as was the predicted mature peptide in skin secretion. Both transcripts exhibited a high degree of nucleotide sequence similarity and of open-reading frame translated amino acid sequences of putative precursor proteins. The translated preprotachykinins each consisted of 80 amino acid residues encoding single copies of either kassinin or its site-substituted analog. Synthetic replicates of each kassinin were found to be active on rat urinary bladder smooth muscle at nanomolar concentrations. The structural organization of both preprotachykinins differs from that previously reported for those of Odorrana grahami skin indicating a spectrum of diversity akin to that established for amphibian skin preprobradykinins.

A Ru/SiO2 catalyst was investigated for the liquid-phase hydrogenation of butan-2-one to butan-2-ol with water as a medium. Although excellent reactivity was observed, a gradual deactivation of the catalyst was found on recycle of the catalyst. The spent catalyst was characterized by using XRD, XPS, TEM, TPR, CO chemisorption, FTIR and ICP analyses. Formation of Ru(OH)(x) surface species is proposed to be the main cause of catalyst deactivation with no significant Ru leaching into the reaction mixture. Following catalyst regeneration, up to 85% of the initial catalytic activity could be recovered successfully. Moreover, adsorption of secondary aliphatic alcohols on the catalyst was found to significantly reduce the formation of Ru(OH)(x) during the reaction, thus protecting the catalyst from deactivation.
