Earlier studies in adults have indicated that increased oxidative stress may occur in the blood and airways of asthmatic subjects. Therefore the aim of this study was to compare the concentrations of antioxidants and protein carbonyls in bronchoalveolar lavage fluid of clinically stable atopic asthmatic children (AA, n = 78) with our recently published reference intervals for nonasthmatic children (C, n = 124). Additionally, lipid peroxidation products (malondialdehyde) in bronchoalveolar lavage fluid and several antioxidants in plasma were determined. Bronchoalveolar lavage concentrations (median and interquartile range) of ascorbate [AA: 0.433 (0.294-0.678) versus C: 0.418 (0.253-0.646) micromol/L], urate [AA: 0.585 (0.412-0.996) versus C: 0.511 (0.372-0.687) micromol/L], alpha-tocopherol [AA: 0.025 (0.014-0.031) versus C: 0.017 (0.017-0.260) micromol/L], and oxidized proteins as reflected by protein carbonyls [AA: 1.222 (0.970-1.635) versus C: 1.243 (0.813-1.685) nmol/mg protein] were similar in both groups (p > 0.05 in all cases). The concentration of protein carbonyls correlated significantly with the number of eosinophils, mast cells, and macrophages in AA children only. Concentrations of oxidized proteins and lipid peroxidation products (malondialdehyde) correlated significantly in AA children (r = 0.614, n = 11, p = 0.044). Serum concentrations of ascorbate, urate, retinol, alpha-tocopherol, beta-carotene, and lycopene were similar in both groups whereas alpha-carotene was significantly reduced in asthmatics. Overall, increased bronchoalveolar lavage eosinophils indicate ongoing airway inflammation, which may increase oxidatively modified proteins as reflected by increased protein carbonyl concentrations.

The effects of electron correlation and second-order terms on theoretical total cross sections of transfer ionization in collisions of the helium atom with fast H+, He2+ and Li3+ ions are studied and reported. The total cross sections are calculated using highly correlated wavefunctions with expansion of the transition amplitude in the Born series through the second order. The results of these calculations are in sensible agreement with experimental data.

Previous Call K observations of the B-type star HD 83206 have revealed putative high-velocity interstellar clouds (HVCs) at Local Standard of Rest (LSR) velocities of -80 and -110 km s(- 1). Similar results were also found for the sightline towards HD135485. In this article, we show that these absorption lines are in fact due tr, stellar SII features. As the Call K absorption line in B-type stars is often used to assess the presence and distance of HVCs. we also present a very high quality spectrum of HD 83206 in the Ca II K region (similar to+/-4 Angstrom or +/-300 km s(-1)), so that in the future confusion between stellar lines and HVC features may be avoided.

The sediment sequence from Hasseldala port in southeastern Sweden provides a unique Lateglacial/early Holocene record that contains five different tephra layers. Three of these have been geochemically identified as the Borrobol Tephra, the Hasseldalen Tephra and the 10-ka Askja Tephra. Twenty-eight high-resolution C-14 measurements have been obtained and three different age models based on Bayesian statistics are employed to provide age estimates for the five different tephra layers. The chrono- and pollen stratigraphic framework supports the stratigraphic position of the Borrobol Tephra as found in Sweden at the very end of the Older Dryas pollen zone and provides the first age estimates for the Askja and Hasseldalen tephras. Our results, however, highlight the limitations that arise in attempting to establish a robust, chronologically independent lacustrine sequence that can be correlated in great detail to ice core or marine records. Radiocarbon samples are prone to error and sedimentation rates in lake basins may vary considerably due to a number of factors. Any type of valid and 'realistic' age model, therefore, has to take these limitations into account and needs to include this information in its prior assumptions. As a result, the age ranges for the specific horizons at Hasseldala port are large and calendar year estimates differ according to the assumptions of the age-model. Not only do these results provide a cautionary note for overdependence on one age-model for the derivation of age estimates for specific horizons, but they also demonstrate that precise correlations to other palaeoarchives to detect leads or lags is problematic. Given the uncertainties associated with establishing age-depth models for sedimentary sequences spanning the Lateglacial period, however, this exercise employing Bayesian probability methods represents the best possible approach and provides the most statistically significant age estimates for the pollen zone boundaries and tephra horizons. Aims/hypothesis. Maternal fuel metabolism is known to exert long range effects on the later development of children of diabetic mothers. Recently cardiovascular disease in adult life has been linked retrospectively with foetal malnutrition. The aim of this study was to identify whether markers for fuel-related cardiovascular programming exist for the offspring of diabetic pregnancy.

This paper aims at investigating architectural and urban heritage from the socio-cultural point of view, which stands on the human asset of traditional sites such as the hawari of old Cairo. It analyzes the social practice of everyday life in one of the oldest Cairene hawari, Haret al-Darb al-Asfar. The focus is on architectural and spatial organization of outdoor and indoor spaces that coordinate the spatial practices of local community. A daily monitoring of people’s activities and interviews was conducted in an investigation of how local people perceive their built environment between the house’s interior and the outdoor shared space. It emerges that people construct their own field of private spheres according to complex patterns of daily activities that are not in line with the classical segregation between private and public in Islamic cities. This paper reports that the harah is basically a construct of social spheres that are organized spatially by the flexible development of individual buildings over time and in response to changes in individuals’ needs and capabilities. In order to achieve sustainability in old urban quarters, the paper concludes, the focus should be directed towards the local organization of activities and a comprehensive upgrading of deteriorating buildings to match the changing needs of current population.

A novel approach has been developed to determine ranitidine in paediatric samples using dried blood spots (DBS) on Guthrie cards (Whatman 903). A selective and sensitive HPLC-MS/MS assay has been developed and validated using small volumes of blood (30µl). A 6mm disc was punched from each DBS and extracted with methanolic solution of the internal standard (IS) nizatidine. This was further subjected to solid phase extraction (SPE), followed by reversed phase HPLC separation, using a XBridge™ C18 column and mobile phase 10mM ammonium acetate/methanol (98:2 v/v) with a flow rate of 0.3mL/min. This was combined with multiple reaction monitoring (MRM) mass detection using electrospray ionisation (ESI). The calibration curve for ranitidine was found linear over the range 10-500ng/mL (r=0.996). The limit of quantification (LOQ) of the method was validated at 10ng/mL. Accuracy and precision values for within and between days were
