Fifty-two CFLP mice had an open femoral diaphyseal osteotomy held in compression by a four-pin external fixator. The movement of 34 of the mice in their cages was quantified before and after operation, until sacrifice at 4, 8, 16 or 24 days. Thirty-three specimens underwent histomorphometric analysis and 19 specimens underwent torsional stiffness measurement. The expected combination of intramembranous and endochondral bone formation was observed, and the model was shown to be reliable in that variation in the histological parameters of healing was small between animals at the same time point, compared to the variation between time-points. There was surprisingly large individual variation in the amount of animal movement about the cage, which correlated with both histomorphometric and mechanical measures of healing. Animals that moved more had larger external calluses containing more cartilage and demonstrated lower torsional stiffness at the same time point. Assuming that movement of the whole animal predicts, at least to some extent, movement at the fracture site, this correlation is what would be expected in a model that involves similar processes to those in human fracture healing. Models such as this, employed to determine the effect of experimental interventions, will yield more information if the natural variation in animal motion is measured and included in the analysis.

Reported mast-cell counts in endobronchial biopsies from asthmatic subjects are conflicting, with different methodologies often being used. This study compared three standard methods of counting mast cells in endobronchial biopsies from asthmatic and normal subjects. Endobronchial biopsies were obtained from atopic asthmatic subjects (n=17), atopic nonasthmatic subjects (n=6), and nonatopic nonasthmatic control subjects (n=5). After overnight fixation in Carnoy's fixative, mast cells were stained by the short and long toluidine blue methods and antitryptase immunohistochemistry and were counted by light microscopy. Method comparison was made according to Bland & Altman. The limits of agreement were unacceptable for each of the comparisons, suggesting that the methods are not interchangeable. Coefficients of repeatability were excellent, and not different for the individual techniques. These results suggest that some of the reported differences in mast-cell numbers in endobronchial biopsies in asthma may be due to the staining method used, making direct comparisons between studies invalid. Agreement on a standard method is required for counting mast cells in bronchial biopsies, and we recommend the immunohistochemical method, since fixation is less critical and the resultant tissue sections facilitate clear, accurate, and rapid counts.

Objective: The aim was to investigate the association between periodontal health and the serum levels of various antioxidants including carotenoids, retinol and vitamin E in a homogenous group of Western European men.
Materials and Methods: A representative sample of 1258 men aged 60-70 years, drawn from the population of Northern Ireland, was examined between 2001 and 2003. Each participant had six or more teeth, completed a questionnaire and underwent a clinical periodontal examination. Serum lipid-soluble antioxidant levels were measured by high-performance liquid chromatography with diode array detection. Multivariable analysis was carried out using logistic regression with adjustment for possible confounders. Models were constructed using two measures of periodontal status (low- and high-threshold periodontitis) as dependent variables and the fifths of each antioxidant as a predictor variable.
Results: The levels of a- and ß-carotene, ß-cryptoxanthin and zeaxanthin were highly significantly lower in the men with low-threshold periodontitis (p<0.001). These carotenoids were also significantly lower in high-threshold periodontitis. There were no significant differences in the levels of lutein, lycopene, a- and ?-tocopherol or retinol in relation to periodontitis. In fully adjusted models, there was an inverse relationship between a number of carotenoids (a- and ß-carotene and ß-cryptoxanthin) and low-threshold periodontitis. ß-Carotene and ß-cryptoxanthin were the only antioxidants that were associated with an increased risk of high-threshold severe periodontitis. The adjusted odds ratio for high-threshold periodontitis in the lowest fifth relative to the highest fifth of ß-cryptoxanthin was 4.02 (p=0.003).
Conclusion: It is concluded that low serum levels of a number of carotenoids, in particular beta-cryptoxanthin and beta-carotene, were associated with an increased prevalence of periodontitis in this homogenous group of 60-70-year-old Western European men.

This paper proposes a new hierarchical learning structure, namely the holistic triple learning (HTL), for extending the binary support vector machine (SVM) to multi-classification problems. For an N-class problem, a HTL constructs a decision tree up to a depth of A leaf node of the decision tree is allowed to be placed with a holistic triple learning unit whose generalisation abilities are assessed and approved. Meanwhile, the remaining nodes in the decision tree each accommodate a standard binary SVM classifier. The holistic triple classifier is a regression model trained on three classes, whose training algorithm is originated from a recently proposed implementation technique, namely the least-squares support vector machine (LS-SVM). A major novelty with the holistic triple classifier is the reduced number of support vectors in the solution. For the resultant HTL-SVM, an upper bound of the generalisation error can be obtained. The time complexity of training the HTL-SVM is analysed, and is shown to be comparable to that of training the one-versus-one (1-vs.-1) SVM, particularly on small-scale datasets. Empirical studies show that the proposed HTL-SVM achieves competitive classification accuracy with a reduced number of support vectors compared to the popular 1-vs-1 alternative.

The method of preparation of a novel plastic thin-film sensor that incorporates the fluorescent dye 8-hydroxypryrene-1,3,6-trisulfonic acid is described; the shelf-life of the film is over 6 months. The results of a study on the equilibrium response of the sensor towards different levels of gaseous CO2 fit a model there is a 1 + 1 equilibrium reaction between the deprotonated form of the dye (present in the film as an ion pair) and the concentration of gaseous CO2 present. In contrast to the situation in aqueous solution, in the plastic film the pK(a) of the excited form of the dye appears close to that of the ground-state form, although this does not interfere with its use as 8 CO2 sensor. The 0 to 90% response and recovery times of the film when exposed to an alternating atmosphere of air and 5% CO2 are typically 4.3 and 7.1 s, respectively.

Background: Asthma is a leading, preventable cause of morbidity, mortality and cost. A disproportionate amount of the cost is generated by the 5-10%of patients with difficult-to-control asthma, who are prescribed treatment at step 4/5 of the Global Initiative for Asthma (GINA) guidelines. We have previously demonstrated a high prevalence of nonadherence to inhaled combination therapy (i.e. long-acting ß -adrenoceptor agonist [ß - agonist] and corticosteroid) in this population. The aim of this study was to examine the costs of healthcare utilization in a nonadherent group of patients with difficult-to-control asthma compared with adherent subjects. We also wished to examine potential savings if nonadherence to inhaled combination therapy could be addressed. All costs were measured from the perspective of a publicly funded health service Methods: Adherence was determined through examination of patient prescription refill behaviour and validated with a medical concordance interview. Data on healthcare use were collected from a patient survey and hospital records that included prescribed medicines, hospital admissions, intensive care unit (ICU) admissions and other unscheduled healthcare visits associated with asthma care. Activity was monetized using standard UK references and between-group comparisons based on a series of univariate and multivariate regression analyses. Results: Cost differences were identified for inhaled combination therapy, nebulizer, short acting b2-agonists and hospital costs excluding and including ICU admissions between adherent and nonadherent subjects. Compared with a group who have refractory asthma and who are adherent with medication, additional healthcare costs in nonadherent subjects are offset by the reduction in costs associated with reduced medication utilization. However, if nonadherence can be successfully targeted and hospital admissions avoided in this population, there is a potential $475 ($843-$368) saving per patient, per annum. Conclusion: Nonadherence is an important cause of difficult-to-control asthma. A uniform cost for subjects with difficult-to-control disease can be applied to economic analyses, independent of adherence, as increased healthcare utilization costs are offset by the reduced medication cost due to poor adherence. However, there are substantial potential savings in subjects with difficult-to-control asthma, who are nonadherent to inhaled combination therapy, if cost effective strategies for nonadherence are developed. © 2011 Adis Data Information BV. Cross-sectional research has shown that frequency of self-disclosure to outgroup members mediates the positive relationship between intergroup friendship and outgroup attitudes. The current research investigated the relationship between self-disclosure and attitudes in more depth. New undergraduate students were asked to nominate an ingroup or outgroup friend and then report the intimacy of their disclosures to them, their anxiety and attitudes towards a series of social groups, in the first week of the semester and 6 weeks later. Intimacy of disclosure predicted more positive attitudes towards outgroups over time, but this association was only found among participants who nominated an outgroup friend. In the ingroup friend condition, a negative association was found. These associations were mediated by general intergroup anxiety. These relationships highlight the importance of integrating theories of interpersonal and intergroup relations when investigating intergroup contact. Copyright (C) 2011 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

S. C. Wright, A. Aron, T. McLaughlin-Volpe, and S. A. Ropp (1997) proposed that the benefits associated with cross-group friendship might also stem from vicarious experiences of friendship. Extended contact was proposed to reduce prejudice by reducing intergroup anxiety, by generating perceptions of positive ingroup and outgroup norms regarding the other group, and through inclusion of the outgroup in the self. This article documents the first test of Wright et al.'s model, which used structural equation modeling among two independent samples in the context of South Asian-White relations in the United Kingdom. Supporting the model, all four variables mediated the relationship between extended contact and outgroup attitude, controlling for the effect of direct contact. A number of alternative models were ruled out, indicating that the four mediators operate concurrently rather than predicting one another.

The common prior assumption justifies private beliefs as posterior probabilities when updating a common prior based on individual information. We dispose of the common prior assumption for a homogeneous oligopoly market with uncertain costs and firms entertaining arbitrary priors about other firms' cost-type. We show that true prior beliefs can not be evolutionarily stable when truly expected profit measures (reproductive) success.

Objective: The authors evaluated and synthesised the best-available evidence relating to the effectiveness of CJLD service models with respect to changes in mental health status and/or criminal recidivism. Methods: Research examining the effectiveness of CJLD services when compared to traditional Criminal Justice System (CJS) responses was reviewed and systematically appraised according to Campbell/Cochrane guidelines. Key outcomes included a reduction in offending and post-intervention changes in mental health. Results: Comprehensive searches of published and unpublished literature identified 6571 studies which varied considerably in terms of their methodological approach and overall quality. Ten studies met the inclusion criteria. The synthesised findings indicated that, when compared to traditional CJS outcomes, CJLD services appeared to be effective in terms of identifying MDOs and impacting positively on criminal justice and mental health outcomes. Conclusions: Although the evidence may be deemed to be moderate in terms of methodological rigour, overall, the findings suggest that CJLD services can be beneficial. The effectiveness of services depends upon the model of service delivery, the availability of community services and the engagement of MDOs.The successful implementation of CJLD services requires a clearer recognition of the importance of system of care principles.
