This paper describes an experimental investigation into the surface heat transfer coefficient of finned metal cylinders in a free air stream. Eight cast aluminium alloy cylinders were tested with four different fin pitches and five different fin lengths. The cylinders and their fins were designed to be representative of those found on a motorcycle engine. Each electrically heated cylinder was mounted in a wind tunnel and subjected to a range of air speeds between 2 and 20 m/s. The surface heat transfer coefficient, h, was found primarily to be a function of the air speed and the fin separation, with fin length having a lesser effect. The coefficient increases with airspeed and as the fins are separated or shortened. It was also noted that a limiting value of coefficient exists, influenced only by airspeed. Above the limiting value the surface heat transfer could not be increased by further separation of the fins or reduction in their length.

Nanoparticles of ZnO with the wurtzite structure have been successfully synthesized via a microwave through the decomposition of zinc acetate dihydrate in an ionic liquid, 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide, as a solvent. Fundamental characterizations including X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) were conducted for the ZnO nanostructures.

The ability to switch between propagating modes is important for body-centric applications such as medical body area networks where a single node may need to be able to optimise communications for either on-body sensor links or off-body links to the wider network. Therefore, we present a compact 2.45 GHz active mode-switching wearable antenna for both on-body and off-body wireless communications. The single-layer patch antenna was pattern-switched using shorting pins and had an impedance bandwidth of 253 MHz and 217 MHz for the on-body and off-body radiating modes, respectively. An efficiency of 57 % and 56.8 % was obtained for on-body and off-body mode respectively when placed in close proximity to a phantom that represents a muscle issue at 2.45 GHz.

This paper is a hybrid starting with an overview and history of biodiesel synthesis and finishing with a description with some of our latest unpublished data. Initially, we examine "green" ways of obtaining biodiesel using ionic liquids, which can have an acidic or basic functionality, and can function both as a solvent and catalyst for the (trans)esterification reaction to obtain biodiesel. Both animal and vegetable resources can be utilized as a resource for (trans)esterification reactions depending on the geographical area. Biodiesel is of great interest because it enables motor vehicle transport using a renewable resource, while reducing the amount of carbon dioxide from fossil fuels being released into the environment.

Almost alternating copolymers of bicyclo[2.2.1]hept-2-ene and cyclopentene have been formed by ring-opening metathesis polymerization using a RuCl3-phenol catalyst system; this highly novel result is attributed to differential steric influences exerted by a hydrogen-bonded solvent cage which encloses the catalyst site.

Highly selective positive allosteric modulators (PAMs) of metabotropic glutamate receptor subtype 5 (mGluR5) have emerged as a potential approach to treat positive symptoms associated with schizophrenia. mGluR5 plays an important role in both long-term potentiation (LTP) and long-term depression (LTD), suggesting that mGluR5 PAMs may also have utility in improving impaired cognitive function. However, if mGluR5 PAMs shift the balance of LTP and LTD or induce a state in which afferent activity induces lasting changes in synaptic function that are not appropriate for a given pattern of activity, this could disrupt rather than enhance cognitive function. We determined the effect of selective mGluR5 PAMs on the induction of LTP and LTD at the Schaffer collateral-CA1 synapse in the hippocampus. mGluR5-selective PAMs significantly enhanced threshold theta-burst stimulation (TBS)-induced LTP. In addition, mGluR5 PAMs enhanced both DHPG-induced LTD and LTD induced by the delivery of paired-pulse low-frequency stimulation. Selective potentiation of mGluR5 had no effect on LTP induced by suprathreshold TBS or saturated LTP. The finding that potentiation of mGluR5-mediated responses to stimulation of glutamatergic afferents enhances both LTP and LTD and supports the hypothesis that the activation of mGluR5 by endogenous glutamate contributes to both forms of plasticity. Furthermore, two systemically active mGluR5 PAMs enhanced performance in the Morris water maze, a measure of hippocampus-dependent spatial learning. Discovery of small molecules that enhance both LTP and LTD in an activity-appropriate manner shows a unique action on synaptic plasticity that may provide a novel approach for the treatment of impaired cognitive function. In this study, the PTW 1000SRS array with Octavius 4D phantom was characterised for FF and FFF beams. MU linearity, field size, dose rate, dose per pulse (DPP) response and dynamic conformal arc treatment accuracy of the 1000SRS array were assessed for 6MV, 6FFF and 10FFF beams using a Varian TrueBeam STx linac. The measurements were compared with a pinpoint IC, microdiamond IC and EBT3 Gafchromic film. Measured dose profiles and FWHMs were compared with film measurements. Verification of FFF volumetric modulated arc therapy (VMAT) clinical plans were assessed using gamma analysis with 3%/3 mm and 2%/2 mm tolerances (10% threshold). To assess the effect of cross calibration dose rate, clinical plans with different dose rates were delivered and analysed. Output factors agreed with film measurements to within 4.5% for fields between 0.5 and 1 cm and within 2.7% for field sizes between 1.5 and 10 cm and were highly correlated with the microdiamond IC detector. Field sizes measured with the 1000SRS array were within 0.5 mm of film measurements. A drop in response of up to 1.8%, 2.4% and 5.2% for 6MV, 6FFF and 10FFF beams respectively was observed with increasing nominal dose rate. With an increase in DPP, a drop of up to 1.7%, 2.4% and 4.2% was observed in 6MV, 6FFF and 10FFF respectively. The differences in dose following dynamic conformal arc deliveries were less than 1% (all energies) from calculated. Delivered VMAT plans showed an average pass percentage of 99.5(±0.8)% and 98.4(±3.4)% with 2%/2 mm criteria for 6FFF and 10FFF respectively. A drop to 97.7(±2.2)% and 88.4(±9.6)% were observed for 6FFF and 10FFF respectively when plans were delivered at the minimum dose rate and calibrated at the maximum dose rate. Calibration using a beam with the average dose rate of the plan may be an efficient method to overcome the dose rate effects observed by the 1000SRS array.
