We present a study on the effect of the alkyl chain length of the imidazolium ring in 1-alkyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide ionic liquids, [C1CnIm][NTf2] (n = 2 to 10), on the mixing properties of (ionic liquid + alcohol) mixtures (enthalpy and volume). We have measured small excess molar volumes with highly asymmetric curves as a function of mole fraction composition (S-shape) with more negative values in the alcohol-rich regions. The excess molar volumes increase with the increase of the alkyl-chain length of the imidazolium cation of the ionic liquid. The values of the partial molar excess enthalpy and the enthalpy of mixing are positive and, for the case of methanol, do not vary monotonously with the length of the alkyl side-chain of the cation on the ionic liquid – increasing from n = 2 to 6 and then decreasing from n = 8. This non-monotonous variation is explained by a more favourable interaction of methanol with the cation head group of the ionic liquid for alkyl chains longer than eight carbon atoms. It is also observed that the mixing is less favourable for the smaller alcohols, the enthalpy of mixing decreasing to less positive values as the alkyl chain of the alcohol increases. Based on the data from this work and on the knowledge of the vapour pressure of {[C1CnIm][NTf2] + alcohol} binary mixtures at T = 298 K reported in the literature, the excess Gibbs free energy, excess enthalpy and excess entropy could be then calculated and it was observed that these mixtures behave like the ones constituted by a non-associating and a non-polar component, with its solution behaviour being determined by the enthalpy.

In this paper strontium-site-deficient Sr2Fe1.4Co0.1Mo0.5O6-δ-based perovskite oxides (SxFCM) were prepared and evaluated as the cathode materials for intermediate temperature solid oxide fuel cells (IT-SOFCs). All samples exhibited a cubic phase structure and the lattice shrinked with increasing the Sr-deficiency as shown in XRD patterns. XPS results determined that the transition elements (Co/Fe/Mo) in SxFCM oxides were in a mixed valence state, demonstrating the small polaron hopping conductivity mechanism existed. Among the samples, S1.950FCM presented the lowest coefficient of thermal expansion of 15.62 × 10-6 K-1, the highest conductivity value of 28 S cm-1 at 500 °C, and the lowest interfacial polarization resistance of 0.093 Ω cm2 at 800 °C, respectively. Furthermore, an anode-supported single cell with a S1.950FCM cathode was prepared, demonstrating a maximum power density of 1.16 W cm-2 at 800 °C by using wet H2 (3% H2O) as the fuel and ambient air as the oxidant. These results indicate that the introduction of Sr-deficiency can dramatically improve the electrochemical performance of Sr2Fe1.4Co0.1Mo0.5O6-δ, showing great promise as a novel cathode candidate material for IT-SOFCs.

In this paper, Sr2Fe1.5Mo0.4Nb0.1O6-δ (SFMNb)-xSm0.2Ce0.8O2-δ (SDC) (x = 0, 20, 30, 40, 50 wt%) composite cathode materials were synthesized by a one-pot combustion method to improve the electrochemical performance of SFMNb cathode for intermediate temperature solid oxide fuel cells (IT-SOFCs). The fabrication of composite cathodes by adding SDC to SFMNb is conducive to providing extended electrochemical reaction zones for oxygen reduction reactions (ORR). X-ray diffraction (XRD) demonstrates that SFMNb is chemically compatible with SDC electrolytes at temperature up to 1100 °C. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) indicates that the SFMNb-SDC composite cathodes have a porous network nanostructure as well as the single phase SFMNb. The conductivity and thermal expansion coefficient of the composite cathodes decrease with the increased content of SDC, while the electrochemical impedance spectra (EIS) exhibits that SFMNb-40SDC composite cathode has optimal electrochemical performance with low polarization resistance (Rp) on the La0.9Sr0.1Ga0.8Mg0.2O3 electrolyte. The Rp of the SFMNb-40SDC composite cathode is about 0.047 Ω cm2 at 800 °C in air. A single cell with SFMNb-40SDC cathode also displays favorable discharge performance, whose maximum power density is 1.22 W cm-2 at 800 °C. All results indicate that SFMNb-40SDC composite material is a promising cathode candidate for IT-SOFCs.

The synthesis of the C2-symmetrical ligand 1 consisting of two naphthalene units connected to two pyridine-2,6-dicarboxamide moieties linked by a xylene spacer and the formation of LnIII-based (Ln1/4 Sm, Eu, Tb, and Lu) dimetallic helicates [Ln2 · 13] in MeCN by means of a metal-directed synthesis is described. By analyzing the metal-induced changes in the absorption and the fluorescence of 1, the formation of the helicates, and the presence of a second species [Ln2 · 12] was confirmed by nonlinear- regression analysis. While significant changes were observed in the photophysical properties of 1, the most dramatic changes were observed in the metal-centred lanthanide emissions, upon excitation of the naphthalene antennae. From the changes in the lanthanide emission, we were able to demonstrate that these helicates were formed in high yields (ca. 90% after the addition of 0.6 equiv. of LnIII), with high binding constants, which matched well with that determined from the changes in the absorption spectra. The formation of the LuIII helicate, [ Lu2 · 13 ] , was also investigated for comparison purposes, as we were unable to obtain accurate binding constants from the changes in the fluorescence emission upon formation of [Sm2 · 13], [Eu2 · 13], and [Tb2 · 13].

New air-stable ruthenium(II) complexes that contain the aryldiamine ligand [C6H3(CH2-NMe2)(2)-2,6](-) (NCN) are described. These complexes are [RuCl{eta(2)-C,N-C6H3(CH2NMe2)(2)-2,6}(eta(6)-C10H14)] (2; C10H14 = p-cymene = C6H4Me-Pr-i-4), [Ru{eta(2)-C,N-C6H3(CH2NMe2)(2)-2,6}(eta(5)-C5H5)(PPh3)] (5), and their isomeric forms [RuCl{eta(2)-C,N-C6H3(CH2NMe2)(2)-2,4}(eta(6)-C10H14)] (3) and [Ru{eta(2)-C,N-C6H3(CH2NMe2)(2)-2,4}(eta(5)-C5H5)(PPh3)] (6), respectively. Complex 2 has been prepared from the reaction of [Li(NCN)](2) with [RuCl2(eta(6)-C10H14)](2), whereas complex 5 has been prepared by the treatment of [RuCl{eta(3)-N,C,N-C6H3(CH2NMe2)(2)-2,6}(PPh3)] (4) with [Na(C5H5)](n). Both 2 and 5 are formally 18-electron ruthenium(II) complexes in which the monoanionic potentially tridentate coordinating ligand NCN is eta(2)-C,N-bonded, In solution (halocarbon solvent at room temperature or in aromatic solvents at elevated temperature), the intramolecular rearrangements of 2 and 5 afford complexes 3 and 6, respectively. This is a result of a shift of the metal-C-aryl bond from position-1 to position-3 on the aromatic ring of the NCN ligand. The mechanism of the isomerization is proposed to involve a sequence of intramolecular oxidative addition and reductive elimination reactions of both aromatic and aliphatic C-H bonds. This is based on results from deuterium labeling, spectroscopic studies, and some kinetic experiments. The mechanism is proposed to contain fully reversible steps in the case of 5, but a nonreversible step involving oxidative addition of a methyl NCH2-H bond in the case of 2. The solid-state structures of complexes 2, 3, 5, and 6 have been determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. A new dinuclear 1,4-phenylene-bridged bisruthenium(II) complex, [1,4-{RuCl(eta(6)-C10H14)}(2){C-6(CH2NMe2)(4)-2,3,5,6-C,N,C',N'}] (9) has also been prepared from the dianionic ligand [C-6(CH2NMe2)(4)-2,3,5,6](2-) (C2N4). The C2N4 ligand is in an eta(2)-C,N-eta(2)-C',N'-bis(bidentate) bonding mode. Compound 9 does not isomerize in solution (halocarbon solvent), presumably because of the absence of an accessible C-aryl-H bond. Complex 9 could not be isolated in an analytically pure form, probably because of its high sensitivity to air and very low solubility, which precludes recrystallization.

The new anionic functionalized aryldiamine ligands [2,6-(Me(2)NCH(2))(2)-4-R-C6H2](-) (R = Me(3)SiC=C, C6H5, Me(3)Si), formally derived from [2,6-(Me(2)NCH(2))(2)C6H3](-), have been prepared as their lithium compounds. The compound [Li{2,6-(Me(2)NCH(2))(2)-4-Ph-C6H2}](2) crystallizes in the monoclinic space group C2/c (no. 15) with a = 13.1225(5), b = 13.5844(7), c = 15.9859(12) Angstrom, beta = 105.329(5)degrees, V = 3264.0(3)Angstrom(3), Z = 4. The structure refinement converged to R(1) = 0.0374 for 2037 observed reflections [F-o>4 sigma(F-o)] and wR(2) = 0.0922 for 2560 unique data. The organolithium compounds have been used in transmetalation reactions to give the corresponding functionalized organoruthenium(II) complexes [Ru-II{2,6-(Me(2)NCH(2))(2)-4-R-C6H2}(terpy)]Cl-+(-) (terpy = 2,2';6',2 ''-terpyridine). The Ru-II species with R = HC = C has also been synthesized.

The novel ligand 4'-diferrocenylallcyne-2,2':6',2 ''-terpyridine (7; Fc-C C-Fc-tpy; tpy = terpyridyl; Fc = ferrocenyl) and its Ru2+ complexes 8-10 have been synthesized and characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, cyclic voltammetry, and UV-vis and luminescence spectroscopy. Electrochemical data and UV absorption and emission spectra indicate that the insertion of an ethynyl group causes delocalization of electrons in the extended pi* orbitals. Cyclic voltammetric measurements of 7 show two successive reversible one-electron-oxidation processes with half-wave potentials of 0.53 and 0.78 V. The small variations of the E-1/2 values for the Fe2+/Fe3+ redox couples after the coordination of the Ru2+ ion suggest a weak interaction between the Ru2+ and Fe2+ centers. After insertion of an ethynyl group, UV-vis absorption spectra show a red shift of the absorption peak of the (1)[(d(pi)(Fe))(6)]->(1)[(d(pi)(Fe))(5)(pi*(Ru)(tpy))(1)] MMLCT of the Ru2+ complexes. The Ru2+ complex 8 exhibits the strongest luminescence intensity (lambda(em)(max) 712 nm, Phi(em) = 2.63 x 10(-4), tau = 323 ns) relative to analogous ferrocene-based terpyridine Ru(II) complexes in H2O/CH3CN (4/1 v/v) solution.

In this paper, niobium doping is evaluated as a means of enhancing the electrochemical performance of a Sr2Fe1.5Mo0.5O6-δ (SFM) perovskite structure cathode material for intermediate temperature solid oxide fuel cells (IT-SOFCs) applications. As the radius of Nb approximates that of Mo and exhibits +4/+5 mixed valences, its substitution is expected to improve material performance. A series of Sr2Fe1.5Mo0.5-xNbxO6-δ (x = 0.05, 0.10, 0.15, 0.20) cathode materials are prepared and the phase structure, chemical compatibility, microstructure, electrical conductivity, polarization resistance and power generation are systematically characterized. Among the series of samples, Sr2Fe1.5Mo0.4Nb0.10O6-δ (SFMNb0.10) exhibits the highest conductivity value of 30 S cm-1 at 550°C, and the lowest area specific resistance of 0.068 Ω cm2 at 800°C. Furthermore, an anode-supported single cell incorporating a SFMNb0.10 cathode presents a maximum power density of 1102 mW cm-2 at 800°C. Furthermore no obvious performance degradation is observed over 15 h at 750°C with wet H2(3% H2O) as fuel and ambient air as the oxidant. These results demonstrate that SFMNb shows great promise as a novel cathode material for IT-SOFCs.

Ni-substituted Sr2Fe1.5-xNixMo0.5O6-δ (SFNM) materials have been investigated as anode catalysts for intermediate temperature solid oxide fuel cells. Reduced samples (x = 0.05 and 0.1) maintained the initial perovskite structure after reduction in H2, while metallic nickel particles were detected on the grain surface for x = 0.2 and 0.3 using transmission electron microscopy. Temperature programmed reduction results indicate that the stable temperature for SFNM samples under reduction conditions decreases with Ni content. In addition, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis suggests that the incorporation of Ni affects the conductivity of SFNM through changing the ratios of Fe3+/Fe2+ and Mo6+/Mo5+. Sr2Fe1.4Ni0.1Mo0.5O6-δ shows the highest electrical conductivity of 20.6 S cm-1 at 800 °C in H2. The performance of this anode was further tested with electrolyte-supported cells, giving 380 mW cm-2 at 750 °C in H2, hence demonstrating that Ni doping in the B-site is beneficial for Sr2Fe1.5Mo0.5O6-δ anode performance.

The electrochemical oxidation of catechol and dopamine has been studied at a platinum micro-electrode (10 pm diameter) in two room temperature ionic liquids (RTILs): 1-Ethyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide ([C(2)mim][NTf2]) and 1-Butyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate ([C(4)mim][BE4]). For catechol in [C(2)mim][NTf2], an electrochemically quasi-reversible oxidation peak was observed at 1.1 V vs. Pt with a back peak at 0.4 V vs. Pt. This is assigned to the two-electron oxidation of catechol to doubly protonated o-benzoquinone. Double-step chronoamperometry gave a diffusion coefficient for the catechol and the oxidised species which is 3.8 x 10(-11) m(2) s(-1) for both. For catechol in [C(4)mim][BF4], a two-electron oxidation wave was observed at 1.0 V vs. Pt with no back peak. Another peak at less positive potential was also observed at 0.6 V vs. Pt in [C(4)mim][BF4] but not in [C(2)mim][NTf2] which is assigned to the adsorption of electrochemically formed neutral o-benzoquinone on the platinum electrode. The oxidised protonated o-benzoquinone is suggested to be deprotonated by the [BF4](-) anion, but not by the [NTf2](-) anion: hence adsorption of the neutral species at the platinum electrode, not the charged species. For dopamine in both RTILs, two chemically irreversible oxidation peaks were observed at 0.75 V and 1.1 V vs. Pt, and assigned to the oxidation of dopamine to the corresponding semi-quinone and the quinone. Potential-step chronoamperometry was carried out on the oxidation waves of dopamine in [C(2)mim][NTf2] and the diffusion coefficient of species in solution was calculated to be 6.85 x 10(-12) m(2) s(-1) and confirmed that the waves corresponded to one and two electron processes. A third wave was observed at 1.8 V vs. Pt which is attributed to the oxidation of the amine group to a radical cation with likely subsequent follow up chemistry. In [C(4)mim][BF4] a peak at less positive potential was observed for dopamine, similar to catechol which is assigned to the adsorption of the neutral quinone species on the platinum electrode formed by the reaction of the removal of protons from the oxidised dopamine with the [BF4](-) anion. The monoanionic ligand [C6H3(CH(2)NMe(2))(2)-2,6](-), a potentially terdentate N,C,N bonding system, has been employed to synthesize a series of new ruthenium(II) complexes [Ru{C6H3(CH(2)NMe(2))(2)-2,6}X(L)] (L = PPh(3) X = Cl (2a), I (2b); L = norbornadiene (nbd), X = Cl (4), eta(1)-OSO2CF3 (5)) and [Ru{C6H3(CH(2)NMe(2))(2)-2,6}(2,2':6',2 ''-terpyridine)]Cl (3). X-ray crystal structures of 2b and 3-5 have been determined, in which the N,C,N coordination geometry with respect to the metal center is found to differ considerably. In each complex the aryldiamine ligand is terdentate, eta(3)-N,C,N-bonded as a six electron donor system. However, depending on the other ligands in the Ru(II) coordination sphere, this ligand demonstrates considerable flexibility in adopting coordination geometries which range from meridional in 3 through pseudomeridional in 2b to pseudofacial in 4 and 5. In the structures of 4 and 5 significant distortions of the aryl ring, involving bending of the six-membered ring into a boatlike conformation, are found. The different combinations of the N,C,N ligand with sets of other ligands lead to a range of metal geometries, i.e. square pyramidal in 2b, octahedral in 3, and bicapped tetrahedral in 4 and 5.

An indicator ink based on the redox dye 2,6-dichloroindophenol ( DCIP) is described, which allows the rapid assessment of the activity of thin, commercial photocatalytic films, such as Activ. The ink works via a photoreductive mechanism, DCIP being reduced to dihydro-DCIP within ca. 7.5 minutes exposure to UVA irradiation of moderate intensity ( ca. 4.8mW cm(-2)). The kinetics of photoreduction are found to be independent of the level of dye present in the ink formulation, but are highly sensitive to the level of glycerol. This latter observation may be associated with a solvatochromic effect, whereby the microenvironment in which the dye finds itself and, as a consequence, its reactivity is altered significantly by small changes in the glycerol content. The kinetics of photoreduction also appear linearly dependent on the UVA light intensity with an observed quantum efficiency of ca. 1.8 x 10(-3). Copyright (C) 2008.
