The free-base form of tetra-tert-butyl porphine (TtBP), which has extremely bulky meso substituents, is severely distorted from planarity, with a ruffling angle of 65.5degrees. The resonance Raman spectrum of TtBP (lambda(ex) = 457.9 nm) and its d(2), d(8), and d(10) isotopomers have been recorded, and while the spectra show high-frequency bands similar to those observed for planar meso-substituted porphyrins, there are several additional intense bands in the low-frequency region. Density functional calculations at the B3-LYP/6-31G(d) level were carried out for all four isotopomers, and calculated frequencies were scaled using a single factor of 0.98. The single factor scaling approach was validated on free base porphine where the RMS error was found to be 14.9 cm(-1). All the assigned bands in the high-frequency (> 1000 cm(-1)) region of TtBP were found to be due to vibrations similar in character to the in-plane skeletal modes of conventional planar porphyrins. In the low-frequency region, two of the bands, assigned as nu(8) (ca. 330 cm(-1)) and nu(16) (ca. 540 cm(-1)), are also found in planar porphyrins such as tetra-phenyl porphine (TPP) and tetra-iso-propyl porphine (IPP). Of the remaining three very strong bands, the lowest frequency band was assigned as gamma(12) (pyr swivel, obsd 415 cm(-1), calcd 407 cm(-1) in do). The next band, observed at 589 cm-1 in the do compound (calcd 583 cm(-1)), was assigned as a mode whose composition is a mixture of modes that were previously labeled gamma(13) (gamma(CmCaHmCa)) andy gamma(11) (pyr fold(asym)) in NiOEP. The final strong band, observed at 744 cm(-1) (calcd 746 cm(-1)), was assigned to a mode whose composition is again a mixture of gamma(11) and gamma(13), although here it is gamma(11) rather than gamma(13) which predominates. These bands have characters and positions similar to those of three of the four porphyrin ring-based, weak bands that have previously been observed for NiTPP. In addition there are several weaker bands in the TtBP spectra that are also

An analytic formulation of dynamic electro-thermally induced nonlinearity is developed for a general resistive element, yielding a self-heating circuit model based on a fractional derivative. The model explains the 10 dB/decade slope of the intermodulation products observed in two-tone testing. Two-tone testing at 400 MHz of attenuators, microwave chip terminations, and coaxial terminations is reported with tone spacing ranging from 1 to 100 Hz.

It has been suggested that there are systematic distortions in children's memory for temporal durations, such that children's memory is not just less accurate than that of adults but qualitatively different. Experiment I replicated the memory distortion effect by demonstrating developmental change in the tendency to confuse a reference duration with one that is shorter rather than longer than it. When the long-term memory demands of the task were reduced by providing reminders of the reference duration on every trial, there were no such qualitative changes in error patterns (Experiment 2). Further evidence for developmental changes in memory distortion was found in the temporal generalization task of Experiment 3, in which stimuli were spaced logarithmically rather than linearly. In Experiment 4, a similar distortion pattern was absent in a task in which children made judgments about the pitch rather than the duration of stimuli, suggesting the effect may be specific to time estimation. Lip separation is one of the primary sources of inlet distortion, which can result in a loss in fan stability. High angles of incidence are one of several critical causes of lip separation. There have been many studies into inlet performance at high incidence, including the resulting distortion levels when lip separation occurs. However, the vast majority of these investigations have been carried out experimentally, with little in the way of computational results for inlet performance at high incidence. The flow topology within an inlet when lip separation has occurred is also not well understood. This work aims to demonstrate a suitable model for the prediction of inlet flows at high incidence using ANSYS CFX, looking at both the performance of the inlet and the separated flow topology within the inlet. The attenuating effect of the fan is also investigated, with particular emphasis on the flow redistribution ahead of the fan. The results show that the model used is suitable for predicting inlet performance in adverse operating conditions, showing good agreement with experimental results. In addition, the attenuation of the distortion by the fan is also captured by the numerical model.

The ability to accurately predict residual stresses and resultant distortions is a key product from process assembly simulations. Assembly processes necessarily consider large structural components potentially making simulations computationally expensive. The objective herein is to develop greater understanding of the influence of friction stir welding process idealization on the prediction of residual stress and distortion and thus determine the minimum required modeling fidelity for future airframe assembly simulations. The combined computational and experimental results highlight the importance of accurately representing the welding forging force and process speed. In addition, the results emphasize that increased CPU simulation times are associated with representing the tool torque, while there is potentially only local increase in prediction fidelity.

The operations and processes that the human brain employs to achieve fast visual categorization remain a matter of debate. A first issue concerns the timing and place of rapid visual categorization and to what extent it can be performed with an early feed-forward pass of information through the visual system. A second issue involves the categorization of stimuli that do not reach visual awareness. There is disagreement over the degree to which these stimuli activate the same early mechanisms as stimuli that are consciously perceived. We employed continuous flash suppression (CFS), EEG recordings, and machine learning techniques to study visual categorization of seen and unseen stimuli. Our classifiers were able to predict from the EEG recordings the category of stimuli on seen trials but not on unseen trials. Rapid categorization of conscious images could be detected around 100?ms on the occipital electrodes, consistent with a fast, feed-forward mechanism of target detection. For the invisible stimuli, however, CFS eliminated all traces of early processing. Our results support the idea of a fast mechanism of categorization and suggest that this early categorization process plays an important role in later, more subtle categorizations, and perceptual processes.

The paper presents a conceptual discussion of the characterisation and phenomenology of passive intermodulation (PIM) by the localised and distributed nonlinearities in passive devices and antennas. The PIM distinctive nature and its impact on signal distortions are examined in comparison with similar effects in power amplifiers. The main features of PIM generation are discussed and illustrated by the example of PIM due to electro-thermal nonlinearity. The issues of measurement, discrimination and modelling of PIM generated by nonlinearities in passive RF components and antennas are addressed.
