Abstract This work addresses the problems of effective in situ measurement of the initiation or the rate of steel corrosion in reinforced concrete structures through the use of optical fiber sensor systems. By undertaking a series of tests over prolonged periods, coupled with acceleration of corrosion, the performance of fiber Bragg grating-based sensor systems attached to high-tensile steel reinforcement bars (ldquorebarsrdquo), and cast into concrete blocks was determined, and the results compared with those from conventional strain gauges where appropriate. The results show the benefits in the use of optical fiber networks under these circumstances and their ability to deliver data when conventional sensors failed.

In view of accumulating evidence of vascular pathology in Alzheimer's disease (AD), we tested the hypothesis that AD patients have impaired endothelial function. This was assessed using the technique of strain-gauge venous occlusion plethysmography, which measures forearm blood flow (FBF). Intra-arterial (brachial) infusion of acetylcholine (ACh) and sodium nitroprusside (SNP) was used to assess local endothelial dependent and independent responses, respectively. There was no difference in the basal FBF of patients and controls. ACh and SNP caused dose-related increases in FBF from baseline, but no difference was recorded between the AD and control group. This study provides no evidence of endothelial dysfunction in the systemic circulation of patients with AD.

A strain gauge instrumentation trial on a high pressure die casting ‘HPDC’ die was compared to a corresponding simulation model using Magmasoft® casting simulation software at two strain gauge rosette locations. The strains were measured during the casting cycle, from which the von Mises stress was determined and then compared to the simulation model. The von Mises stress from the simulation model correlated well with the findings from the instrumentation trial, showing a difference of 5.5%, ~ 10 MPa for one strain gauge rosette located in an area of low stress gradient. The second rosette was in a region of steep stress gradient, which resulted in a difference of up to 40%, ~40 MPa between the simulation and instrumentation results. Factors such as additional loading from die closure force or metal injection pressure which are not modelled by Magmasoft® were seen to have very little influence on the stress in the die, less than 7%.

The postbuckling behaviour of a panel with blade-stiffeners incorporating tapered flanges was experimentally investigated. A new failure mechanism was identified for this particular type of stiffener. Failure was initiated by mid-plane delamination at the free edge of the postbuckled stiffener web at a node-line. This was consistent with an interlaminar shear stress failure and was calculated from strain gauge measurements using an approximate analysis based on lamination theory and incorporating edge effects. The critical shear stress was found to agree well with the shear strength obtained from a three-point bending test of the web laminate.

This paper describes the problems in experimentally obtaining hydrodynamic loads on an oscillating wave surge converter during slamming events, with the aim of furthering understanding of full scale hydrodynamic loads that flap type devices must be designed to withstand. Including how hydro-elastic effects and structural response are linked and why they are essential to the measurement of impulsive hydrodynamic loads. A combined experimental and numerical structural response study carried out on a 40th scale Oyster model drew conclusions on the structural vibration observed in the strain gauge load cell measurement. A further structural response study on a piezo electric load measurement device gave an insight into the advantages it could bring to reducing hydro-elastic effects.

Sleep quality and duration are increasingly recognised as being important prognostic parameters in the assessment of an individual's health. However, reliable non-invasive long-term monitoring of sleep in a non-clinical setting remains a challenging problem. This paper describes the validation of a novel under mattress pressure sensing sleep monitoring modality that can be seamlessly integrated into existing home environments and provides a pervasive and distributed solution for monitoring long-term changes in sleep patterns and sleep disorders in adults. 410 minutes of concomitant Under Mattress Bed Sensor (UMBS) and strain gauge data were analysed from eight healthy adults lying passively. In this analysis, customised respirations rate detection algorithms yielded a mean difference of −0.12 breaths per five minutes and a mean percentage error (MPE) of 0.16% when the sensor was placed beneath the mattress. 1,491 minutes of UMBS and video data were recorded simultaneously from four participants in order to assess the movement detection efficacy of customised UMBS algorithms. These algorithms yielded accuracies, sensitivities and specificities of over 90% when compared to a video-based movement detection gold standard. A reduced data set (267 minutes) of wrist actigraphy, the gold standard ambulatory sleep monitor, was recorded. The UMBS was shown to outperform the movement detection ability of wrist actigraphy and has the added advantage of not requiring active subject participation.

In this paper, the reliability and thus the suitability of optical fibre strain sensors for surface strain measurement in concrete structures was investigated. Two different configurations of optical strain sensors were used each having different mountings making them suitable for different uses in various structures. Due to the very limited time available to install the sensors and take result, commercially packaged sensors were used. In the tests carried out each sensor was mounted onto a concrete beam which was then subjected to a range of known and calibrated loadings. The performance of the optical strain sensors thus evaluated was compared with the results of conventional techniques. This comparison allows for selecting the best performing combination of sensor/mounting, i.e. long-gauge sensor with mounts bolted to threaded rods glued into the concrete for use in future work in a field test where a limited time window was available for installation, testing and post-test demounting. © 2012 Elsevier B.V.

Ziebuhr W, Dietrich K, Trautmann M, Wilhelm M. Institut für Molekulare Infektionsbiologie, Würzburg, Germany. w.ziebuhr@mail.uni-wuerzburg.de During two clinical courses of shunt-associated meningitis in a 3-month-old child, five multiresistant S. epidermidis isolates were obtained and analyzed with regard to biofilm production and antibiotic susceptibility. Three S. epidermidis strains, which were initially isolated from the cerebrospinal fluid, produced biofilms on polystyrene tissue culture plates. Following antibiotic treatment and subsequent exchange of the shunt system, sterilization of the CSF was achieved. However, after three weeks a relapse of the infection occurred. The two S. epidermidis isolates obtained now were biofilm negative, but showed an identical resistance pattern as those from the previous infection, except that resistance to rifampicin and increased mininal inhibitory concentrations of aminoglycoside antibiotics had emerged. DNA fingerprinting by PFGE indicated the clonal origin of all isolates. However, some DNA rearrangements and differences in the IS256-specific hybridization patterns could be identified in the isolates from the second infection period that led to altered biofilm formation and increased expression of aminoglycoside resistance traits. The data evidence that variation of biofilm expression occurs in vivo during an infection and highlight the extraordinary genome flexibility of pathogenic S. epidermidis.

X-ray analysis of ferroelectric thin layers of Ba1/2Sr1/2TiO3 with different thicknesses reveals the presence of strain gradients across the films and allows us to propose a functional form for the internal strain profile. We use this to calculate the influence of strain gradient, through flexoelectric coupling, on the degradation of the ferroelectric properties of films with decreasing thickness, in excellent agreement with the observed behavior. This paper shows that strain relaxation can lead to smooth, continuous gradients across hundreds of nanometers, and it highlights the pressing need to avoid such strain gradients in order to obtain ferroelectric films with bulklike properties.
