Data processing is an essential part of Acoustic Doppler Profiler (ADP) surveys, which have become the standard tool in assessing flow characteristics at tidal power development sites. In most cases, further processing beyond the capabilities of the manufacturer provided software tools is required. These additional tasks are often implemented by every user in mathematical toolboxes like MATLAB, Octave or Python. This requires the transfer of the data from one system to another and thus increases the possibility of errors. The application of dedicated tools for visualisation of flow or geographic data is also often beneficial and a wide range of tools are freely available, though again problems arise from the necessity of transferring the data. Furthermore, almost exclusively PCs are supported directly by the ADP manufacturers, whereas small computing solutions like tablet computers, often running Android or Linux operating systems, seem better suited for online monitoring or data acquisition in field conditions. While many manufacturers offer support for developers, any solution is limited to a single device of a single manufacturer. A common data format for all ADP data would allow development of applications and quicker distribution of new post processing methodologies across the industry.

The effects of high-pressure processing (HPP) in conjunction with an essential oil-based active packaging on the surface of ready-to-eat (RTE) chicken breast were investigated as post-processing listericidal treatment. Three different treatments were used, and all samples were vacuum packed: (i) HPP at 500. MPa for 1. min (control), (ii) active packaging based on coriander essential oil, and (iii) active packaging and HPP. When applied individually, active packaging and pressurisation delayed the growth of Listeria monocytogenes. The combination of HPP and active packaging resulted in a synergistic effect reducing the counts of the pathogen below the detection limit throughout 60. days storage at 4. °C. However, when these samples were stored at 8. °C, growth did occur, but again a delay in growth was observed. The effects on colour and lipid oxidation were also studied during storage and were not significantly affected by the treatments. Active packaging followed by in-package pressure treatment could be a useful approach to reduce the risk of L. monocytogenes in cooked chicken without impairing its quality. Industrial relevance: Ready-to-eat products are of great economic importance to the industry. However, they have been implicated in several outbreaks of listeriosis. Therefore, effective ways to reduce the risk from this pathogenic microorganism can be very attractive for manufacturers. This study showed that the use of active packaging followed by HPP can enhance the listericidal efficiency of the treatment while using lower pressure levels, and thus having limited effects on colour and lipid oxidation of RTE chicken breast.

The mechanism of harmonic generation in the interaction of short laser pulses with solid targets holds the promise for the production of intense attosecond pulses. Using the three dimensional code ILLUMINATION we have performed simulations pertaining to an experimentally realizable parameter range by high power laser systems to become available in the near future. The emphasis of the investigation is on the coherent nature of the emission. We studied the influence of the plasma scale length on the harmonic efficiency, angular distribution and the focusability using a post processing scheme in which the far-field of the emission is calculated. It is found that the presence of an extended density profile reduces significantly the transverse coherence length of the emitted XUV light. The different stages of the interaction for two particular cases can be followed with the help of movies.

This paper presents a systematic measurement campaign of diversity reception techniques for use in multiple-antenna wearable systems operating at 868 MHz. The experiments were performed using six time-synchronized bodyworn receivers and considered mobile off-body communications in an anechoic chamber, open office area and a hallway. The cross-correlation coefficient between the signal fading measured by bodyworn receivers was dependent upon the local environment and typically below 0.7. All received signal envelopes were combined in post-processing to study the potential benefits of implementing receiver diversity based upon selection combination, equal-gain and maximal-ratio combining. It is shown that, in an open office area, the 5.7 dB diversity gain obtained using a dual-branch bodyworn maximal-ratio diversity system may be further improved to 11.1 dB if a six-branch system was used. First-and second-order theoretical equations for diversity reception techniques operating in Nakagami fading conditions were used to model the postdetection combined envelopes. Maximum likelihood estimates of the Nakagami-parameter suggest that the fading conditions encountered in this study were generally less severe than Rayleigh. The paper also describes an algorithm that may be used to simulate the measured output of an M-branch diversity combiner operating in independent and identically-distributed Nakagami fading environments.

The authors discuss the imaging properties and transfer of amplitude and phase-modulated signals through a phase conjugating lens (PCL). The authors outline the mechanisms of the near-field and far-field subwavelength imaging of Hertzian dipole sources using PCL, particularly the authors show that one-dimensional subwavelength resolution of multiple sources is possible in the far-field using a PCL augmented with specially designed scatterers located in both the adjacent vicinity of the sources and in the mirror symmetric positions in the image plane. These scatterers enable evanescent-to-propagating spectrum and its dual, propagating-to-evanescent, field conversion. Thus, the subwavelength information encoded into propagating waves on the source side can be extracted on the image side. Next, for the first time the transfer of amplitude and phase modulated signals through a PCL augmented with evanescent-to-propagating spectrum conversion is discussed and it has been demonstrated that multiple amplitude or phase modulated dipole sources can be distinguished in the far-field with subwavelength resolution without the necessity for numerical post-processing of the received data. From the study conducted here, it is concluded that a system of transmitters/receivers augmented with a PCL and appropriate scatterers operates without the need for any numerical processing of the receive data in order to separate channel information from very close proximity stations.

Explosions of sub-Chandrasekhar-mass white dwarfs (WDs) are one alternative to the standard Chandrasekhar-mass model of Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia). They are interesting since binary systems with sub-Chandrasekhar-mass primary WDs should be common and this scenario would suggest a simple physical parameter which determines the explosion brightness, namely the mass of the exploding WD. Here we perform one-dimensional hydrodynamical simulations, associated post-processing nucleosynthesis, and multi-wavelength radiation transport calculations for pure detonations of carbon-oxygen WDs. The light curves and spectra we obtain from these simulations are in good agreement with observed properties of SNe Ia. In particular, for WD masses from 0.97 to 1.15 Msun we obtain 56Ni masses between 0.3 and 0.8 Msun, sufficient to capture almost the complete range of SN Ia brightnesses. Our optical light curve rise times, peak colors, and decline timescales display trends which are generally consistent with observed characteristics although the range of B-band decline timescales displayed by our current set of models is somewhat too narrow. In agreement with observations, the maximum light spectra of the models show clear features associated with intermediate-mass elements and reproduce the sense of the observed correlation between explosion luminosity and the ratio of the Si II lines at ?6355 and ?5972. We therefore suggest that sub-Chandrasekhar-mass explosions are a viable model for SNe Ia for any binary evolution scenario leading to explosions in which the optical display is dominated by the material produced in a detonation of the primary WD. © 2010. The explosion of sub-Chandrasekhar mass white dwarfs via the double detonation scenario is a potential explanation for type Ia supernovae. In this scenario, a surface detonation in a helium layer initiates a detonation in the underlying carbon/oxygen core leading to an explosion. For a given core mass, a lower bound has been determined on the mass of the helium shell required for dynamical burning during a helium flash, which is a necessary prerequisite for detonation. For a range of core and corresponding minimum helium shell masses, we investigate whether an assumed surface helium detonation is capable of triggering a subsequent detonation in the core even for this limiting case. We carried out hydrodynamic simulations on a co-expanding Eulerian grid in two dimensions assuming rotational symmetry. The detonations are propagated using the level-set approach and a simplified scheme for nuclear reactions that has been calibrated with a large nuclear network. The same network is used to determine detailed nucleosynthetic abundances in a post-processing step. Based on approximate detonation initiation criteria in the literature, we find that secondary core detonations are triggered for all of the simulated models, ranging in core mass from 0.810 up to 1.385 M? with corresponding shell masses from 0.126 down to 0.0035 M?. This implies that, as soon as a detonation triggers in a helium shell covering a carbon/oxygen white dwarf, a subsequent core detonation is virtually inevitable.

CCTV systems are broadly deployed in the present world. Despite this, the impact on anti-social and criminal behaviour has been minimal. Subject reacquisition is a fundamental task to ensure in-time reaction for intelligent surveillance. However, traditional reacquisition based on face recognition is not scalable, hence in this paper we use reasoning techniques to reduce the computational effort which deploys the time-of-flight information between interested zones such as airport security corridors. Also, to improve accuracy of reacquisition, we introduce the idea of revision as a method of post-processing.We demonstrate the significance and usefulness of our framework with an experiment which shows much less computational effort and better accuracy.

Most Wave Energy Converters (WECs) being developed are fundamentally different from known marine structures. Limited experience is a fundamental challenge for the design, especially issues concerning load assumptions and power estimates. Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) CFD methods are being used successfully in many areas of marine engineering. They have been shown to accurately simulate many hydrodynamic effects and are a helpful tool for investigating complex flows. The major drawback is the significant computational power required and the associated overhead with pre and post-processing. This paper presents the challenges and advantages in the application of RANS CFD methods in the design process of a wave energy converter and compares the time, labour and ultimately financial requirements for obtaining practical results.

We investigate whether pure deflagration models ofChandrasekhar-mass carbon-oxygen white dwarf stars can account for one or more subclass of the observed population of Type Ia supernova (SN Ia) explosions. We compute a set of 3D full-star hydrodynamic explosion models, in which the deflagration strength is parametrized using the multispot ignition approach. For each model, we calculate detailed nucleosynthesis yields in a post-processing step with a 384 nuclide nuclear network. We also compute synthetic observables with our 3D Monte Carlo radiative transfer code for comparison with observations. For weak and intermediate deflagration strengths (energy release E {less-than or approximate} 1.1 × 10 erg), we find that the explosion leaves behind a bound remnant enriched with 3 to 10 per cent (by mass) of deflagration ashes. However, we do not obtain the large kick velocities recently reported in the literature. We find that weak deflagrations with E ~ 0.5 × 10 erg fit well both the light curves and spectra of 2002cx-like SNe Ia, and models with even lower explosion energies could explain some of the fainter members of this subclass. By comparing our synthetic observables with the properties of SNe Ia, we can exclude the brightest, most vigorously ignited models as candidates for any observed class of SN Ia: their B-V colours deviate significantly from both normal and 2002cx-like SNe Ia and they are too bright to be candidates for other subclasses.

The term fatigue loads on the Oyster Oscillating Wave Surge Converter (OWSC) is used to describe hydrostatic loads due to water surface elevation with quasi-static changes of state. Therefore a procedure to implement hydrostatic pressure distributions into finite element analysis of the structure is desired. Currently available experimental methods enable one to measure time variant water surface elevation at discrete locations either on or around the body of the scale model during tank tests. This paper discusses the development of a finite element analysis procedure to implement time variant, spatially distributed hydrostatic pressure derived from discretely measured water surface elevation. The developed method can process differently resolved (temporal and spatial) input data and approximate the elevation over the flap faces with user defined properties. The structural loads, namely the forces and moments on the body can then be investigated by post processing the numerical results. This method offers the possibility to process surface elevation or hydrostatic pressure data from computational fluid dynamics simulations and can thus be seen as a first step to a fluid-structure interaction model.

Stellar evolution models predict the existence of hybrid white dwarfs (WDs) with a carbon-oxygen core surrounded by an oxygen-neon mantle. Being born with masses similar to 1.1 M-aS (TM), hybrid WDs in a binary system may easily approach the Chandrasekhar mass (M-Ch) by accretion and give rise to a thermonuclear explosion. Here, we investigate an off-centre deflagration in a near-M-Ch hybrid WD under the assumption that nuclear burning only occurs in carbon-rich material. Performing hydrodynamics simulations of the explosion and detailed nucleosynthesis post-processing calculations, we find that only 0.014 M-aS (TM) of material is ejected while the remainder of the mass stays bound. The ejecta consist predominantly of iron-group elements, O, C, Si and S. We also calculate synthetic observables for our model and find reasonable agreement with the faint Type Iax SN 2008ha. This shows for the first time that deflagrations in near-M-Ch WDs can in principle explain the observed diversity of Type Iax supernovae. Leaving behind a near-M-Ch bound remnant opens the possibility for recurrent explosions or a subsequent accretion-induced collapse in faint Type Iax SNe, if further accretion episodes occur. From binary population synthesis calculations, we find the rate of hybrid WDs approaching M-Ch to be of the order of 1 per cent of the Galactic SN Ia rate.

There have been over 3000 bridge weigh-in-motion (B-WIM) installations in 25 countries worldwide, this has led vast improvements in post processing of B-WIM systems since its introduction in the 1970’s. Existing systems are based on electrical resistance strain gauges which can be prohibitive in achieving data for long term monitoring of rural bridges due to power consumption. This paper introduces a new low-power B-WIM system using fibre optic sensors (FOS). The system consisted of a series of FOS which were attached to the soffit of an existing integral bridge with a single span of 19m. The site selection criteria and full installation process has been detailed in the paper. A method of calibration was adopted using live traffic at the bridge site and based on this calibration the accuracy of the system was determined. New methods of axle detection for B-WIM were investigated and verified in the field.

Bridge Weigh in Motion (B-WIM) uses accurate sensing systems to transform an existing bridge into a mechanism to determine actual traffic loading. This information on traffic loading can enable efficient and economical management of transport networks and is becoming a valuable tool for bridge safety assessment. B-WIM can provide site specific traffic loading on deteriorating bridges, which can be used to determine if the reduced capacity is still sufficient to allow the structure to remain operational and minimise unnecessary replacement or rehabilitation costs and prevent disruption to traffic. There have been numerous reports on the accuracy classifications of existing B-WIM installations and some common issues have emerged. This paper details some of the recent developments in B-WIM which were aimed at overcoming these issues. A new system has been developed at Queens University Belfast using fibre optic sensors to provide accurate axle detection and improved accuracy overall. The results presented in this paper show that the fibre optic system provided much more accurate results than conventional WIM systems, as the FOS provide clearer signals at high scanning rates which require less filtering and less post processing. A major disadvantage of existing B-WIM systems is the inability to deal with more than one vehicle on the bridge at the same time; sensor strips have been proposed to overcome this issue. A bridge can be considered safe if the probability that load exceeds resistance is acceptably low, hence B-WIM information from advanced sensors can provide confidence in our ageing structures.
