A range of lanthanum strontium manganates (La1−xSrxMnO3–LSMO) where 0 ≤ x < 0.4 were prepared using a modified peroxide sol–gel synthesis method. The magnetic nanoparticle (MNP) clusters obtained for each of the materials were characterised using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) and infra-red (IR) spectroscopy in order to confirm the crystalline phases, crystallite size and cluster morphology. The magnetic properties of the materials were assessed using the Superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID) to evaluate the magnetic susceptibility, Curie temperature (Tc) and static hysteretic losses. Induction heating experiments also provided an insight into the magnetocaloric effect for each material. The specific absorption rate (SAR) of the materials was evaluated experimentally and via numerical simulations. The magnetic properties and heating data were linked with the crystalline structure to make predictions with respect to the best LSMO composition for mild hyperthermia (41 °C ≤ T ≤ 46 °C). La0.65Sr0.35MnO3, with crystallite diameter of 82.4 nm, (agglomerate size of ∼10 μm), Tc of 89 °C and SAR of 56 W gMn−1 at a concentration 10 mg mL−1 gave the optimal induction heating results (Tmax of 46.7 °C) and was therefore deemed as most suitable for the purposes of mild hyperthermia, vide infra.

A surface plasmon resonance (SPR) biosensor screening assay was developed and validated to detect 11 benzimidazole carbamate (BZT) veterinary drug residues in milk. The polyclonal antibody used was raised in sheep against a methyl 5(6)-[(carboxypentyl)-thio]-2-benzimidazole carbamate protein conjugate. A sample preparation procedure was developed using a modified QuEChERS method. BZT residues were extracted from milk using liquid extraction/partition with a dispersive solid phase extraction clean-up step. The assay was validated in accordance with the performance criteria described in 2002/657/EC. The limit of detection of the assay was calculated from the analysis of 20 known negative milk samples to be 2.7 mu g kg(-1). The detection capability (CC beta) of the assay was determined to be 5 mu g kg(-1) for 11 benzimidazole residues and the mean recovery of analytes was in the range 81-116%. A comparison was made between the SPR-biosensor and UPLC-MS/MS analyses of milk samples (n = 26) taken from cows treated different benzimidazole products, demonstrating the SPR-biosensor assay to be fit for purpose. BACKGROUND: On the basis of preclinical studies of NC-6004, a cisplatin-incorporated micellar formulation, we hypothesised that NC-6004 could show lower toxicity than cisplatin and show greater anti-tumour activity in phase I study. METHODS: A total of 17 patients were recruited in a range of advanced solid tumour types. NC-6004 was administered intravenously (i.v.) every 3 weeks. The dose escalation started at 10?mg?m(-2) and was increased up to 120?mg?m(-2) according to the accelerated titration method and modified Fibonacci method. RESULTS: One dose-limiting toxicity (DLT) occurred in a patient who was given 90?mg?m(-2) of NC-6004, otherwise any significant cisplatin-related toxicity was not observed or generally mild toxicity was observed. Despite the implementation of post-hydration and pre-medication regimen, renal impairment and hypersensitivity reactions still developed at 120?mg?m(-2), which led to the conclusion that the maximum tolerated dose was 120?mg?m(-2), and the recommended dose was 90?mg?m(-2), although DLT was not defined as per protocol. Stable disease was observed in seven patients. The maximum concentration and area under the concentration-time curve of ultrafilterable platinum at 120?mg?m(-2) NC-6004 were 34-fold smaller and 8.5-fold larger, respectively, than those for cisplatin. CONCLUSION: The delayed and sustained release of cisplatin after i.v. administration contributes to the low toxicity of NC-6004.

Triclabendazole is the only anthelmintic drug, which is active against immature, mature and adult stages of fluke. The objective of this work was to develop an analytical method to quantify and confirm the presence of triclabendazole residues around the MRL. In this work, a new analytical method was developed, which extended dynamic range to 1–100 and 5–1000 g kg-1 for milk and tissue, respectively. This was achieved using a mobile phase containing trifluoroacetic acid (pKa of 0.3), which resulted in the formation of the protonated pseudomolecular ions, [M+H]+, of triclabendazole metabolites. Insufficient
ionisation of common mobile phase additives due to low pKa values (<2) was identified as the cause of poor linearity. The new mobile phase conditions allowed the analysis of triclabendazole residues in liver, muscle and milk encompassing their EU maximum residue levels (MRL) (250, 225 and 10 g kg-1 respectively). Triclabendazole residues were extracted using a modified QuEChERS method and analysed by positive electrospray ionisation mass spectrometry with all analytes eluted by 2.23 min. The method was validated at the MRL according to Commission Decision (CD) 2002/657/EC criteria. The decision limit (CC) of the method was in the range of 250.8–287.2, 2554.9–290.8 and 10.9–12.1 g kg-1 for liver, muscle and milk, respectively. The performance of the method was successfully verified for triclabendazole in muscle by participating in a proficiency study, the method was also applied to incurred liver, muscle and milk samples.

The insect pathogen Beauveria bassiana, Metarhizium anisopliae and Paecilomyces farinosos can be effective biocontrol agents when relative humidity (RH) is close to 100%. At reduced water availability, germination of propagules, and therefore host infection, cannot occur. Cultures of B. bassiana, M. anisopliae and P. farinosus were grown under different conditions to obtain conidia with a modified polyol and trehalose content. Conidia with higher intracellular concentrations of glycerol and erythritol germinated both more quickly and at lower water activity (a(w)) than those from other treatments. In contrast, conidia containing up to 235.7 mg trehalose g-1 germinated significantly (P < 0 05) more slowly than those with an equivalent polyol content but less trehalose, regardless of water availability. Conidia from control treatments did not germinate below 0.951 - 0.935 a(w) (≡ 95.1 - 93.5% RH). In contrast, conidia containing up to 164.6 mg glycerol plus erythritol g-1 germinated down to 0.887 a(w) (≡ 88.7% RH). These conidia germinated below the water availability at which mycelial growth ceases (0.930 - 0.920 a(w)). Germ tube extension rates reflected the percentage germination of conidia, so the most rapid germ tube growth occurred after treatments which produced conidia containing the most glycerol and erythritol. This study shows for the first time that manipulating polyol content can extend the range of water availability over which fungal propagules can germinate. Physiological manipulation of conidia may improve biological control of insect pests in the field.

This article reveals the effect of plasma pre-treatment on antimony tin oxide (ATO) nanoparticles. The effect is to allow Pt@Pd to be deposited homogeneously on the ATO surface with high dispersion and narrow particle size distribution. The Pt@Pd core–shell catalyst was prepared using the polyol method and shows a dramatic improvement towards ORR activity and durability.

Objectives: To determine whether adjusting the denominator of the common hospital antibiotic use measurement unit (defined daily doses/100 bed-days) by including age-adjusted comorbidity score (100 bed-days/age-adjusted comorbidity score) would result in more accurate and meaningful assessment of hospital antibiotic use. 

Methods: The association between the monthly sum of age-adjusted comorbidity and monthly antibiotic use was measured using time-series analysis (January 2008 to June 2012). For the purposes of conducting internal benchmarking, two antibiotic usage datasets were constructed, i.e. 2004-07 (first study period) and 2008-11 (second study period). Monthly antibiotic use was normalized per 100 bed-days and per 100 bed-days/age-adjusted comorbidity score. 

Results: Results showed that antibiotic use had significant positive relationships with the sum of age-adjusted comorbidity score (P = 0.0004). The results also showed that there was a negative relationship between antibiotic use and (i) alcohol-based hand rub use (P = 0.0370) and (ii) clinical pharmacist activity (P = 0.0031). Normalizing antibiotic use per 100 bed-days contributed to a comparative usage rate of 1.31, i.e. the average antibiotic use during the second period was 31% higher than during the first period. However, normalizing antibiotic use per 100 bed-days per age-adjusted comorbidity score resulted in a comparative usage rate of 0.98, i.e. the average antibiotic use was 2% lower in the second study period. Importantly, the latter comparative usage rate is independent of differences in patient density and case mix characteristics between the two studied populations. 

Conclusions: The proposed modified antibiotic measure provides an innovative approach to compare variations in antibiotic prescribing while taking account of patient case mix effects.

The method described here cannot fully replace the analysis of large columns by small test columns (microcolumns). The procedure, however, is suitable for speeding up the determination of adsorption parameters of dye onto the adsorbent and for speeding up the initial screening of a large adsorbent collection that can be tedious if a several adsorbents and adsorption conditions must be tested. The performance of methylene blue (MB), a basic dye, Cibacron reactive black (RB) and Cibacron reactive yellow (RY) was predicted in this way and the influence of initial dye concentration and other adsorption conditions on the adsorption behaviour were demonstrated.

An extension of the pole-zero matching method proposed by Stefano Maci et al. for the analysis of electromagnetic bandgap (EBG) structures composed by lossless dipole-based frequency selective surfaces (FSS) printed on stratified dielectric media, is presented in this paper. With this novel expansion, the dipoles length appears as a variable in the analytical dispersion equation. Thus, modal dispersion curves as a function of the dipoles length can be easily obtained with the only restriction of single Floquet mode propagation. These geometry-dispersion curves are essential for the efficient analysis and design of practical EBG structures, such as waveguides loaded with artificial magnetic conductors (AMC) for miniaturization, or leaky-wave antennas (LWA) using partially reflective surfaces (PRS). These two practical examples are examined in this paper. Results are compared with full-wave 2D and 3D simulations showing excellent agreement, thus validating the proposed technique and illustrating its utility for practical designs.

Natural Bulgarian clinoptilolite from the south-eastern Rhodopes mountain was modified through treatment with hydrochloric acid with various normality, both single and repeatedly, as well as through a charring of a preliminary obtained NH4-form. The parameters concerning the uptake of the ion-exchangeable cations (Ca2+, Na+ and K+), as well as the uptake of aluminium from the natural material were calculated on the basis of the chemical contents. The highest extent of cations removal was attained in the case of the treatment with NH4Cl solution, while the highest aluminium deficiency was established in the samples treated by hydrochloric acid solutions with increasing concentration. Sulfur dioxide adsorption on the obtained decationised and dealuminised samples was studied according to the frontal-dynamic method. The parameters of the breakthrough curves, namely breakthrough time, saturation time and some of the statistical moments of the curve distribution, were determined. The dynamic adsorption capacities were also specified. Comparing the momentum values it was established that as a result of the natural zeolite treatment with NH4Cl and with low concentrated acid, the diffusion resistance decreases because of the dominant exchange of the presenting exchangeable cations in the samples with the smaller size protons and because of enlargement of the pores opening. Intensified dealuminisation was observed when more concentrated acid solutions are used. The capacity is enhanced, probably due to an increase in the total pore volume.

A method for the hydrothermal synthesis of a single layer of zeolite Beta crystals on a molybdenum substrate for microreactor applications has been developed. Before the hydrothermal synthesis, the surface of the substrate was modified by an etching procedure that increases the roughness at the nanoscale level without completely eliminating the surface lay structure. Then, thin films of Al2O3 (170 nm) and TiO2 (50 nm) were successively deposited by atomic layer deposition (ALD) on the substrate. The internal Al2O3 film protects the Mo substrate from oxidation up to 550 degrees C in an oxidative environment. The high wettability of the external TiO2 film after UV irradiation increases zeolite nucleation on its surface. The role of the metal precursor (TiCl4 vs TiI4), deposition temperature (300 vs 500 degrees C), and film thickness (50 vs 100 nm) was investigated to obtain titania films with the slowest decay in the superhydrophilic behavior after UV irradiation. Zeolite Beta coatings with a Si/Al ratio of 23 were grown at 140 degrees C for 48 It. After ion exchange with a 10(-4) M cobalt acetate solution, the activity of the coatings was determined in the ammoxidation of ethylene to acetonitrile in a microstructured reactor. A maximum reaction rate of 220 mu mol C2H3N g(-1) s(-1) was obtained at 500 degrees C, with 42% carbon selectivity to acetonitrile. (C) 2007 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

Conventional water purification and disinfection generally involve potentially hazardous substances, some of which known to be carcinogenic in nature. Titanium dioxide photocatalytic processes provide an effective route to destroy hazardous organic contaminants. This present work explores the possibility of the removal of organic pollutants (phenol) by the application of TiO2 based photocatalysts. The production of series of metal ions doped or undoped TiO2 were carried out via a sol–gel method and a wet impregnation method. Undoped TiO2 and Cu doped TiO2 showed considerable phenol degradation. The efficiency of photocatalytic reaction largely depends on the photocatalysts and the methods of preparation the photocatalysts. The doping of Fe, Mn, and humic acid at 1.0 M% via sol–gel methods were detrimental for phenol degradation. The inhibitory effect of initial phenol concentration on initial phenol degradation rate reveals that photocatalytic decomposition of phenol follows pseudo zero order reaction kinetics. A concentration of > 1 g/L TiO2 and Cu doped TiO2 is required for the effective degradation of 50 mg/L of phenol at neutral pH. The rise in OH- at a higher pH values provides more hydroxyl radicals which are beneficial of phenol degradation. However, the competition among phenoxide ion, Cl- and OH- for the limited number of reactive sites on TiO2 will be a negative influence in the generation of hydroxyl radical. The dependence of phenol degradation rate on the light intensity was observed, which also implies that direct sunlight can be a substitute for the UV lamps and that photocatalytic treatment of organic pollutants using this technique shows some promise.

The arc-length method has become a widely established solution technique for studying nonlinear structural behavior. By augmenting the set of nonlinear equilibrium equations with a constraint equation, which is a function of both the displacements and load increment, it is capable of traversing limit points. Numerous investigations have shown that highly nonlinear behavior such as sharp "snap-backs" can still lead to numerical difficulties. Two practical examples are presented to assess the effectiveness of this solution technique in capturing secondary instabilities in postbuckling structures, which present themselves as abrupt mode jumps. Although the first example poses no special difficulties, in the second case the nonlinear procedure fails to converge. An improvement to the method's formulation is suggested, which accounts for the residual forces that are usually neglected, when proceeding to the next increment once convergence is reached on the current increment. The choice of a correct load increment at the first iteration, within a predictor-corrector scheme, is central to the method's effectiveness. Current strategies for a choice of this load increment are discussed and are shown to be no longer consistent with the modified formulation; therefore, a new approach is proposed.
