Bimetallic catalyst system of ruthenium oxide (RuO) and niobium oxide (NbO) was prepared using the Adams method and the hydrolysis method. Physical and electrochemical characterizations of the catalysts were studied using X-ray diffraction (XRD), Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), cyclic voltammogram (CV) and polarization measurements. NbO addition to RuO was found to increase the stability of RuO. In Adams method the sodium nitrate was found to be forming complex with NbO at high temperature reaction. This makes Adams method unsuitable for the synthesis of RuO -NbO bimetallic system. Hydrolysis method on other hand does not have this problem. But a proper mixture of two oxides was not obtained in hydrolysis method. A lower crystallite size for bimetallic system was obtained with Adams method compared to hydrolysis method. RuO prepared by Adams method had higher activity compared to the hydrolysis counterpart in electrolyzer operation with nafion membrane. A cell voltage of 1.62 V was obtained with RuO (A) at 1 A/cm. A higher stability for RuNbO(A) compared to RuO(A) was observed in continuous cyclic voltammogram and electrolyzer cell test. Copyright © 2013, Hydrogen Energy Publications, LLC. Titanium dioxide coatings have potential applications including photocatalysts for solar assisted hydrogen production, solar water disinfection and self-cleaning windows. Herein, we report the use of suspension plasma spraying (SPS) for the deposition of conformal titanium dioxide coatings. The process utilises a nanoparticle slurry of TiO2 (ca. 6 and 12 nm respectively) in water, which is fed into a high temperature plasma jet (ca. 7000-20 000 K). This facilitated the deposition of adherent coatings of nanostructured titanium dioxide with predominantly anatase crystal structure. In this study, suspensions of nano-titanium dioxide, made via continuous hydrothermal flow synthesis (CHFS), were used directly as a feedstock for the SPS process. Coatings were produced by varying the feedstock crystallite size, spray distance and plasma conditions. The coatings produced exhibited ca. 90-100% anatase phase content with the remainder being rutile (demonstrated by XRD). Phase distribution was homogenous throughout the coatings as determined by micro-Raman spectroscopy. The coatings had a granular surface, with a high specific surface area and consisted of densely packed agglomerates interspersed with some melted material. All of the coatings were shown to be photoactive by means of a sacrificial hydrogen evolution test under UV radiation and compared favourably with reported values for CVD coatings and compressed discs of P25.

Biaxial stretching of melt mixed high density polyethylene (HDPE)/multiwalled carbon nanotube (MWCNT) nanocomposites was conducted in the melt state at different stretching ratios (SRs). The addition of MWCNTs leads to significant strain hardening in the HDPE, greatly improving the stability and thus processability of the stretching process. Scanning electron microscopy shows that the MWCNTs in the polymer matrix are gradually disentangled and randomly oriented in the stretching plane with increasing SRs. All the stretched samples exhibit an increase in crystallinity (about 10%) due to strain induced crystallization and a broadened distribution of crystallite size according to the XRD and DSC results. The mechanical properties of the composites improve with increasing SRs, while they drop off after a SR of 2.5 for the neat HDPE which is likely to be due to the relaxation of polymer chains prior to solidification. The presence of the MWCNTs appears to inhibit this relaxation thus helping to maintain the orientation and mechanical properties at high SRs. The modulus, yield strength and breaking strength of stretched composites with 8 wt% MWCNTs increase by approximately 54%, 85% and 193% respectively compared with the neat HDPE at a SR of 3. The electrical percolation threshold for the unstretched material occurs at 1.9 wt% MWCNTs. As SR increases, the values of critical concentration increase from 1.9 wt% to 4.9 wt% implying the destruction of conductive networks due to an increased inter-particle distance. A loading of 6 wt% MWCNTs is sufficient to ensure that the sheet conductivity is robust to changes in the SR. Decreased values of critical exponent from 1.9 to 1.1 and morphological investigation reveal a transformation of the system structure from three dimensional to two dimensional as SR increases.

A range of lanthanum strontium manganates (La1−xSrxMnO3–LSMO) where 0 ≤ x < 0.4 were prepared using a modified peroxide sol–gel synthesis method. The magnetic nanoparticle (MNP) clusters obtained for each of the materials were characterised using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) and infra-red (IR) spectroscopy in order to confirm the crystalline phases, crystallite size and cluster morphology. The magnetic properties of the materials were assessed using the Superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID) to evaluate the magnetic susceptibility, Curie temperature (Tc) and static hysteretic losses. Induction heating experiments also provided an insight into the magnetocaloric effect for each material. The specific absorption rate (SAR) of the materials was evaluated experimentally and via numerical simulations. The magnetic properties and heating data were linked with the crystalline structure to make predictions with respect to the best LSMO composition for mild hyperthermia (41 °C ≤ T ≤ 46 °C). La0.65Sr0.35MnO3, with crystallite diameter of 82.4 nm, (agglomerate size of ∼10 μm), Tc of 89 °C and SAR of 56 W gMn−1 at a concentration 10 mg mL−1 gave the optimal induction heating results (Tmax of 46.7 °C) and was therefore deemed as most suitable for the purposes of mild hyperthermia, vide infra.

Size-exclusion or gel filtration chromatography is one of the most popular methods for determining the sizes of proteins. Proteins in solution, or other macromolecules, are applied to a column with a defined support medium. The behavior of the protein depends on its size and that of the pores in the medium. If the protein is small relative to the pore size, it will partition into the medium and emerge from the column after larger proteins. Besides a protein's size, this technique can also be used for protein purification, analysis of purity, and study of interactions between proteins. In this unit protocols are provided for size-exclusion high-performance liquid chromatography (SE-HPLC) and for conventional gel filtration, including calibration of columns (in terms of the Stokes radius) using protein standards.

175 nm-thick Ba0.5Sr0.5TiO3 (BST) thin film fabricated by pulsed laser deposition (PLD) technique is found to be a mixture of two distributions of material. We discuss whether these two components are nano-regions of paraelectric and ferroelectric phases, or a bimodal grain-size distribution, or an effect of oxygen vacancy gradient from the electrode interface. The fraction of switchable ferroelectric phase decreases under bipolar pulsed fields, but it recovers after removal of the external fields. The plot of capacitance in decreasing dc voltage (C(Vdown arrow) versus that in increasing dc 61 voltage C(Vup arrow) is a superposition of overlapping of two triangles, in contrast to one well-defined triangle for typical ferroelectric SrBi2Ta2O9 thin films.

The efficacies of putative fasciolicides and vaccines against Fasciola hepatica are frequently monitored in clinical and field trials by determination of fluke egg output in host faeces and by worm counts in the host liver at autopsy. Less often used are parameters based on fluke size and histology, yet these can provide important indications of specific effects on the development of particular germ-line or somatic tissues, especially in relation to the timing and profligacy of egg production. In this study. F. hepatica metacercariae of two distinct isolates, the triclabendazole (TCBZ)-sensitive Cullompton isolate and the TCBZ-resistant Oberon isolate, were administered to rats as single-isolate or mixed-isolate infections. At autopsy 16 weeks later individual adult flukes were counted, measured and the reproductive organs were examined histologically. The degree of development of the testis tubules in each fluke was represented by a numerical score, based on the proportion of the histological section profiles occupied by testis tissue. The level of anti-F. hepatica antibody in the serum of each rat was determined by ELISA. It was found that Cullompton flukes were significantly larger than Oberon flukes, and that significantly more Cullompton metacercariae developed to adults than Oberon metacercariae. The Cullompton flukes showed histological evidence of aspermy and spermatogenic arrest, which was reflected in quantitatively reduced testicular development, as compared with the Oberon isolate. In Cullompton flukes, parthenogenetic egg development is implied. The size of Cullompton and Oberon flukes was significantly related to the number of adult flukes recovered, to the number of metacercariae administered, and to the percentage success of infection. The testis development score in both isolates was significantly related to the number of adult flukes recovered but not to the number of metacercariae administered, or to the percentage success of infection. Fluke size was positively related to testis score for both isolates, and a significant negative relationship was found between percentage success of infection and metacercarial dose. The results are interpreted in terms of differing interactions between various numbers of young flukes and host immunity during invasion of and migration in the hepatic parenchyma, and of fluke intra-specific (possibly pheromonal) stimulatory effects in the final stages of development, within the host bile ducts. No significant relationships were found between host antibody levels and fluke size or testis score. False positive serological reactions were found in some rats that had been infected, but found to harbour no flukes at autopsy. Clearly the act of eliminating the flukes involved generation of an immune response. (C) 2011 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Ethanol adsorption-desorption isotherms on well-organized mesoporous silica and titania films with hexagonal pores structure were studied by ellipsometric porosimetry. The mesopore volume Was calculated from the change of the effective refractive index at the end points of the isotherm. An improved Derjaguin-Broekhoff-de Boer (IDBdB) model for cylindrical pores is proposed for the determination of the pore size. In this model, the disjoining pressure isotherms were obtained by measuring the thickness of the ethanol film on a non-porous film with the same chemical composition. This approach eliminates uncertainties related to the application of the statistical film thickness determined via t-plots in previous versions of the DBdB model. The deviation in the surface tension of ethanol in the mesopores from that of a flat interface was described by the Tolman parameter in the Gibbs-Tolman-Koening-Buff equation. A positive value of the Tolman parameter of 0.2 nm was found from the fitting of the desorption branch of the isotherms to the experimental data obtained by Low Angle X-ray Diffraction (LA-XRD) and Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) measurements in the range of pore diameters between 2.1 and 8.3 nm. Angiotensin-converting enzyme (EC3.4.15. I; ACE), isa membrane-bounddipeptidyl carboxypeptidase that mediates the cleavage of the C-terminal dipeptide His-Leu of the decapeptide angiotensin, generating the most powerful endogenous vaso-constricting angiotensin.
Some ACE inhibitors, such as Captopril, have been used as anti-hypertensive drugs. Moreover in recent years, large quantities of ACE inhibitors have been identijied and isolated from peptides derivedfrom food material such as casein, soy protein, jish protein and so on. Functional food with hypotensive effect has been developed on the basis of these works.
Typicalprocedures for screening hypotensive peptides offood origins are separationof products of peptic and tryptic digestion of proteins followed by inhibitory activitydetermination of each fraction. A method developed by Cushman has been the mostwidely used, in which ACE activity is determined by the amount of hippuric acid
generated as a product of enzymatic reaction of ACE with tripeptide of hippuryl-Lhistidyl-L-leucine. Hippuric acid is determined spectrophotometrically at 228 nm after its isolation from the reaction system by ethylacetate extraction, which not only requires alarge quantity of reagent but also results in large error.
An improved method based on Cushman ’s method is proposed in this paper. In this method, an enzymatic reaction system is based on Cushman’s method, while isolation and determination of hippuric acid is performed by medium perjormance gel chromatography on a Toyopearl HW-40s column. Due to the size exclusion nature of the column with somewhat hydrophobic properties, complete separation of four existing fractions in the reaction system is obtained within a smallfraction of the time necessary in Cushman’s method, with ideal reproducibility.
