Objectives. To conduct a prospective evaluation to determine the utility of the BTA stat test in the detection of upper tract transitional cell carcinoma (UTTCC). Monitoring for UTTCC currently relies on invasive procedures such as upper tract imaging, ureteral washing cytology (UWC) and/or ureteroscopy, or voided urine cytology (VUC). The BTA stat test is a sensitive qualitative immunoassay that detects human complement factor H-related protein in voided urine.

Methods. A total of 81 patients participated, 27 with histopathologically confirmed UTTCC, 26 with upper tract calculi, and 28 with microscopic hematuria but no evidence of urologic disease. Voided specimens collected before surgery or treatment were tested with the BTA stat test and VUC. UWC was performed in specimens collected by a ureteral catheter.

Results. The BTA stat test was significantly more sensitive and specific than VUC or UWC. The overall sensitivity for each was 82%, 11%, and 48%; the specificity was 89%, 54%, and 33%. The positive predictive value for the BTA stat test was 79% and the negative predictive value was 91%, both the highest of the three tests.

Conclusions. The BTA stat test was superior to VUC and UWC in the detection of UTTCC. These results may support the adoption of a less aggressive follow-up policy when monitoring for UTTCC when the BTA stat result is negative. If cystoscopy is negative and the BTA stat test is positive, upper tract investigations should be expedited and, if the bladder is in place, bladder biopsies performed. The travel experience filled with personal trauma; the pilgrimage through a war-torn place; the journey with those suffering: these represent the darker sides of travel. What is their allure and how are they represented? This volume takes an ethnographic and interdisciplinary approach to explore the writings and texts of dark journeys and travels. In traveling over the dead, amongst the dying, and alongside the suffering, the authors give us a tour of humanity’s violence and misery. And yet, from this dark side, there comes great beauty and poignancy in the characterization of plight; creativity in the comic, graphic, and graffiti sketches and comments on life; and the sense of profound and spiritual journeys being undertaken, recorded, and memorialized.

Roysten Abel’s The Manganiyar Seduction is perhaps the most popular performance of Indian folk music on the global festival market today. This performance of Rajasthani folk music is an apt exemplification of an auto-exoticism framed as cultural commodity. Its mise en scéne of musicians framed, literally, by illuminated red square boxes ‘theatricalises’ Rajasthan’s folk culture of orality and renders such a tradition the quality of strangeness that borders on theatre and music, contemporary and traditional. The ‘dazzling’ union of the Manganiyar’s music and scenography of Amsterdam’s red light district engendered an exotic seduction that garnered raving reviews on its global tour. This paper then examines the production’s performative interstices: the in betweenness of sound and sight where aural tradition is ‘spectacularised’, and the shifting convergences of tradition and cultural consumption. It further interrogates the role of reception in the construction of such ‘exotic’ spectacles.

A two-act stage play performed in Belfast's Opera House with a subsequent Irish tour. In a parable about how to remember the past, Dermy, a journalist in 1977 Belfast, is neurotically compelled to remember every victim of the Troubles. But when a whale sails into Belfast Lough, his life is changed. But is it a miracle or a mirage?

A single drama for BBC Radio 3 The Wire: Andy has hit a mid-life crisis. His career is a mess, his relationship is falling apart and despite, or perhaps because of this, he seems intent on eating himself into an early grave. The Voice in his head has warned him, clearly, and a nightmarish tour of his inner organs has left him in no doubt that he is headed for, at best, a coronary arrest; at worst, something that he can't bear to think about it.

And yet he persists. Drowning in despair he grasps at crumbs of comfort, ingesting enough food to support a small country and doubling his waist and his weight in just one month, terrifying his wife and his work colleagues and rendering the average doorway inadequate for his desperate attempts at escape.

Keloids are the result of excessive scar tissue formation. Besides their poor aesthetic appearance, keloids can be associated with severe clinical symptoms such as pain, itching, and rigidity. Unfortunately, most therapeutic approaches remain clinically unsatisfactory. Recently, injections with botulinum toxin A (BTA) were proposed for the treatment of established keloids in a clinical trial. In this study, we aimed to verify the effects of intralesional BTA for the treatment of therapy-resistant keloids using objective measurements. In addition, the underlying molecular mechanisms were investigated using cultured keloid-derived fibroblasts.

Making Ireland Modern is a cross-disciplinary, inter-institutional, inter-media design and research project which emerged from an open competition (won by Boyd and McLaughlin) to commission/curate the Irish pavilion for the Venice biennale 2014. It explores the relationship between architecture, infrastructure and technology in the building of a new nation. Constructed as a demountable, open matrix of drawings, photographs, models and other artefacts, the exhibition (12 x 5 x 6 metres) presents ten infrastructural episodes – Negation, Electricity, Health, Transportation, Television, Aviation, Education, Telecommunications, Motorways, Data – spanning a period of one hundred years from 1916-2016. Exploring a range of scales from the detail design of objects to entire landscapes and other territories, Making Ireland Modern describes architecture’s role in transforming the physical and cultural identity of the new state through its intersession in the everyday lives of its population. In 2015, we were commissioned by the Arts Council of Ireland to expand and develop the pavilion for a three cities tour of Ireland as one of the five major strands of the Arts Council’s Art2016 programme of Irish State’s 1916-2016 centennial celebrations (2016).
