Stable networks of order r where r is a natural number refer to those networks that are immune to coalitional deviation of size r or less. In this paper, we introduce stability of a finite order and examine its relation with efficient networks under anonymous and component additive value functions and the component-wise egalitarian allocation rule. In particular, we examine shapes of networks or network architectures that would resolve the conflict between stability and efficiency in the sense that if stable networks assume those shapes they would be efficient and if efficient networks assume those shapes, they would be stable with minimal further restrictions on value functions.

PF4 has previously been shown to have potent inhibitory effects on myoactivity of somatic muscle strips from the nematode, Ascaris suum. This study examined the bioactivity and metabolic stability of position 2- and position 5-modified analogues of PF4. Although the analogues [Leu(5)] PF4, [Ala(2)]PF4, [Gly(2)]PF4, [Ala(2),Leu(5)]PF4, and [Gly(2),Leu(5)]PF4 all had qualitatively similar inhibitory effects on A. suum somatic muscle strips, their effects were quantitatively distinguishable and had the order of potency: PF4 = [Leu(5)] PF4 >> [Ala(2)]PF4 = [Ala(2),Leu(5)] PF4 >> [Gly(2)] PF4 = [Gly(2),Leu(5)] PF4. Leu(5) for Ile(5) substitutions in PF4 did not alter the activity of this peptide; however, Gly(2)/Ala(2) for Pro(2) substitutions reduced, but did not abolish, peptide activity. Peptide stability studies revealed that [Gly(2)]PF4(2-7) and -(3-7) and [Ala(2)]PF4(2-7), -(3-7), and -(4-7) fragments were generated following exposure to A. suum somatic muscle strips. However, the parent peptide (PF4) was not metabolized and appeared to be resistant to the sequential cleavages of native aminopeptidases. Observed analogue metabolism appeared to be due to the activity of released aminopeptidases as identical fragments were generated by incubation in medium that had been exposed to somatic muscle strips and from which the strips had been removed prior to peptide addition. It was found that the muscle stretching and bath mixing characteristics of the tension assay led to more effective release of soluble enzymes from muscle strips and thus greater peptide degradation. These studies reveal that Pro(2) in PF4 is not essential for the biological activity of this peptide; however, it does render the peptide resistant to the actions of native nematode aminopeptidases. Aminolevulinic acid (ALA) stability within topical formulations intended for photodynamic therapy (PDT) is poor due to dimerisation to pyrazine-2,5-dipropionic acid (PY). Most strategies to improve stability use low pH vehicles, which can cause cutaneous irritancy. To overcome this problem, a novel approach is investigated that uses a non-aqueous vehicle to retard proton-induced charge separation across the 4-carbonyl group on ALA and lessen nucleophilic attack that leads to condensation dimerisation. Bioadhesive anhydrous vehicles based on methylvinylether-maleic anhydride copolymer patches and poly(ethyleneglycol) or glycerol thickened poly(acrylic acid) gels were formulated. ALA stability fell below pharmaceutically acceptable levels after 6 months, with bioadhesive patches stored at 5°C demonstrating the best stability by maintaining 86.2% of their original loading. Glycerol-based gels maintained 40.2% in similar conditions. However, ALA loss did not correspond to expected increases in PY, indicating the presence of another degradative process that prevented dimerisation. Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) analysis was inconclusive in respect of the mechanism observed in the patch system, but showed clearly that an esterification reaction involving ALA and both glycerol and poly(ethyleneglycol) was occurring. This was especially marked in the glycerol gels, where only 2.21% of the total expected PY was detected after 204 days at 5°C. Non-specific esterase hydrolysis demonstrated that ALA was recoverable from the gel systems, further supporting esterified binding within the gel matrices. It is conceivable that skin esterases could duplicate this finding upon topical application of the gel and convert these derivatives back to ALA in situ, provided skin penetration is not affected adversely.

We investigated how the relative direction of limb movements in external space (iso- and non-isodirectionality), muscular constraints (the relative timing of homologous muscle activation) and the egocentric frame of reference (moving simultaneously toward/away the longitudinal axis of the body) contribute to the stability of coordinated movements. In the first experiment, we attempted to determine the respective stability of isodirectional and non-isodirectional movements in between-persons coordination. In a second experiment, we determined the effect of the relative direction in external space, and of muscular constraints, on pattern stability during a within-person bimanual coordination task. In the third experiment we dissociated the effects on pattern stability of the muscular constraints, relative direction and egocentric frame of reference. The results showed that (1) simultaneous activation of homologous muscles resulted in more stable performance than simultaneous activation of non-homologous muscles during within-subject coordination, and that (2) isodirectional movements were more stable than non-isodirectional movements during between-persons coordination, confirming the role of the relative direction of the moving limbs in the stability of bimanual coordination. Moreover, the egocentric constraint was to some extent found distinguishable from the effect of the relative direction of the moving limbs in external space, and from the effect of the relative timing of muscle activation. In summary, the present study showed that relative direction of the moving limbs in external space and muscular constraints may interact either to stabilize or destabilize coordination patterns. The authors investigated how the intention to passively perform a behavior and the intention to persist with a behavior impact upon the spatial and temporal properties of bimanual coordination. Participants (N = 30) were asked to perform a bimanual coordination task that demanded the continuous rhythmic extension-flexion of the wrists. The frequency of movement was scaled by an auditory metronome beat from 1.5 Hz, increasing to 3.25 Hz in .25-Hz increments. The task was further defined by the requirement that the movements be performed initially in a prescribed pattern of coordination (in-phase or antiphase) while the participants assumed one of two different intentional states: stay with the prescribed pattern should it become unstable or do not intervene should the pattern begin to change. Transitions away from the initially prescribed pattern were observed only in trials conducted in the antiphase mode of coordination. The time at which the antiphase pattern of coordination became unstable was not found to be influenced by the intentional state. In addition, the do-not-intervene set led to a switch to an in-phase pattern of coordination whereas the stay set led to phase wandering. Those findings are discussed within the framework of a dynamic account of bimanual coordination.

Strategics for the control of human movement are constrained by the neuroanatomical characteristics of the motor system. In particular, there is evidence that the capacity of muscles for producing force has a strong influence on the stability of coordination in certain movement tasks. In the present experiment, our aim was to determine whether physiological adaptations that cause relatively long-lasting changes in the ability of muscles to produce force can influence the stability of coordination in a systematic manner. We assessed the effects of resistance training on the performance of a difficult coordination task that required participants to synchronize or syncopate movements of their index finger with an auditory metronome. Our results revealed that training that increased isometric finger strength also enhanced the stability of movement coordination. These changes were accompanied by alterations in muscle recruitment patterns. In Particular, the trained muscles were recruited in a more consistent fashion following the programme of resistance training. These results indicate that resistance training produces functional adaptations of the neuroanatomical constraints that underlie the control of voluntary movement.

In this paper we consider whether the behaviour of the neural circuitry that controls lower limb movements in humans is shaped primarily by the spatiotemporal characteristics of bipedal gait patterns, or by selective pressures that are sensitive to considerations of balance and energetics. During the course of normal locomotion, the full dynamics of the neural circuitry are masked by the inertial properties of the limbs. In the present study, participants executed bipedal movements in conditions in which their feet were either unloaded or subject to additional inertial loads. Two patterns of rhythmic coordination were examined. In the in-phase mode, participants were required to flex their ankles and extend their ankles in synchrony. In the out-of-phase mode, the participants flexed one ankle while extending the other and vice versa. The frequency of movement was increased systematically throughout each experimental trial. All participants were able to maintain both the in-phase and the out-of-phase mode of coordination, to the point at which they could no longer increase their frequency of movement. Transitions between the two modes were not observed, and the stability of the out-of-phase and in-phase modes of coordination was equivalent at all movement frequencies. These findings indicate that, in humans, the behaviour of the neural circuitry underlying coordinated movements of the lower limbs is not constrained strongly by the spatiotemporal symmetries of bipedal gait patterns.

Backgroundr/>When we move along in time with a piece of music, we synchronise the downward phase of our gesture with the beat. While it is easy to demonstrate this tendency, there is considerable debate as to its neural origins. It may have a structural basis, whereby the gravitational field acts as an orientation reference that biases the formulation of motor commands. Alternatively, it may be functional, and related to the economy with which motion assisted by gravity can be generated by the motor system.r/>Methodology/Principal Findingsr/>We used a robotic system to generate a mathematical model of the gravitational forces acting upon the hand, and then to reverse the effect of gravity, and invert the weight of the limb. In these circumstances, patterns of coordination in which the upward phase of rhythmic hand movements coincided with the beat of a metronome were more stable than those in which downward movements were made on the beat. When a normal gravitational force was present, movements made down-on-the-beat were more stable than those made up-on-the-beat.r/>Conclusions/Significancer/>The ubiquitous tendency to make a downward movement on a musical beat arises not from the perception of gravity, but as a result of the economy of action that derives from its exploitation.

This paper examines the stability of the benefit transfer function across 42 recreational forests in the British Isles. A working definition of reliable function transfer is Put forward, and a suitable statistical test is provided. A novel split sample method is used to test the sensitivity of the models' log-likelihood values to the removal of contingent valuation (CV) responses collected at individual forest sites, We find that a stable function improves Our measure of transfer reliability, but not by much. We conclude that, in empirical Studies on transferability, considerations of function stability are secondary to the availability and quality of site attribute data. Modellers' can study the advantages of transfer function stability vis-a-vis the value of additional information on recreation site attributes. (c) 2008 Elsevier GmbH. All rights reserved.

The effect of Al incorporation and pH adjustment during hydrolysis of the silica precursor on the thermal and structural stability of ordered microporous silica films with a 2D structure is presented. The structural stability of the films was determined from a combination of LA XRD/TEM data with porosity data obtained from ethanol adsorption isotherms. Thermogravimetric analysis and MR data were used to determine the template removal and the thermal stability. Stability of aluminium incorporated silica films has further been examined in several organic solvents with different polarity. A solvent with a higher polarity interacts more strongly with the films; the long-order structure disappeared after exposure to polar solvents. After exposure to non-polar solvents, the pore size uniformity was retained after 48 h. The samples with an Al/Si ratio of 0.007 showed the smallest d-spacing shift after exposure to hexane. The stability was further tested in the hydrogenation of phenylacetylene performed in a batch reactor over 1 wt.% Pd/Si(Al)O-2/Si (Al/Si = 0.007) films at 30 degrees C and 10 bar H-2 with hexane as solvent.
