A comprehensively C-14 AMS dated pollen and chironomid record from Boundary Stream Tarn provides the first chironomid-derived temperature reconstruction to quantify temperature change during Lateglacial times (17,500-10,000 cal yr BP) in the Southern Alps, New Zealand. The records indicate a ca 1000-year disruption to the Lateglacial warming trend and an overall cooling consistent with the Antarctic Cold Reversal (ACR). The main interval of chironomid-inferred summer temperature depression (similar to 2-3 degrees C) lasted about 700 years during the ACR. Following this cooling event, both proxies indicate a warming step to temperatures slightly cooler than present during the Younger Dryas chronozone (12,900-11,500 cal yr BP). These results highlight a direct linkage between Antarctica and mid-latitude terrestrial climate systems and the largely asynchronous nature of the interhemispheric climate system during the last glacial transition. The greater magnitude of temperature changes shown by the chironomid record is attributed to the response of the proxies to differences in seasonal climate with chironomids reflecting summer temperature and vegetation more strongly controlled by duration of winter or by minimum temperatures. These differences imply stronger seasonality at times during the Lateglacial, which may explain some of the variability between other paleoclimate records from New Zealand and have wider implications for understanding differences between proxy records for abrupt climate change. For US credit unions, revenue from non-interest sources has increased significantly in recent years. We investigate the impact of revenue diversification on financial performance for the period 1993–2004. The impact of a change in strategy that alters the share of non-interest income is decomposed into a direct exposure effect, reflecting the difference between interest and non-interest bearing activities, and an indirect exposure effect which reflects the effect of the institution’s own degree of diversification. On both risk-adjusted and unadjusted returns measures, a positive direct exposure effect is outweighed by a negative indirect exposure effect for all but the largest credit unions. This may imply that similar diversification strategies are not appropriate for large and small credit unions. Small credit unions should eschew diversification and continue to operate as simple savings and loan institutions, while large credit unions should be encouraged to exploit new product opportunities around their core expertise.

beta2-Adrenoceptor agonists (beta -agonists) are well known for their growth promoting and repartitioning effects in many species. Although the use of these compounds to increase muscle mass in stockfarming is prohibited within the EU, under directive 96/22/EC, significant illegal use still occurs. With legal and illegal synthesis of new structurally related compounds, the detection of traditional beta -agonists and new derivatives becomes increasingly problematical. This method describes the isolation and solubilisation of a beta2-adrenoceptor from a transfected Chinese hamster ovary cell line, using the detergent digitonin. The solubilised receptor retained its activity and was isolated from the cell membrane at a concentration of 550 +/- 100 fmol mg(-1) of solubilised protein. Competition analysis using the tritiated antagonist dihydroalprenolol revealed receptor affinity for five structurally different beta -agonists, with IC50 values ranging from 2.1 +/- 0.76 X 10(-7) M for salmeterol to 1.1 +/- 0.62 x 10(-5) M for ractopamine. This study has demonstrated that transfected cell lines with a high expression of beta2-adrenoceptors are a convenient source of active receptor material. Solubilised beta (2)-adrenoceptors could form the basis of a multi-analyte screening assay for use in routine screening.
