Thin film capacitor structures in which the dielectric is composed of superlattices of the relaxors [0.2Pb(Zn1/3Nb2/3)O- 3-0.8BaTiO(3)] and Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O-3 have been fabricated by pulsed laser deposition. Superlattice wavelength (Lambda) was varied between similar to3 and similar to 600 nm, and dielectric properties were investigated as a function of Lambda. Progressive enhancement of the dielectric constant was observed on decreasing Lambda, and, in contrast to previous work, this was not associated with the onset of Maxwell-Wagner behavior. Polarization measurements as a function of temperature suggested that the observed enhancement in dielectric constant was associated with the onset of a coupled response. The superlattice wavelength (Lambda =20 nm) at which coupled functional behavior became apparent is comparable to that found in literature for the onset of coupled structural behavior (between Lambda =5 nm and Lambda =10 nm). We invoke the onset of dislocations along the BaTiO3-SrTiO3 interface as reported by Wunderlich et al. to explain the non-monotonic behaviour of the dielectric permittivity as a function of superlattice periodicity and the less than four-fold in-plane symmetry at the dielectric maximum. At a periodicity of about 10/10, depending on composition and growth mechanism, several groups report a maximum of dielectric permittivity. In addition to that we observe in-plane symmetry less than tetragonal for 10/10 superlattices by HR-XRD, in contrast to initial low-resolution data from Tabata et al. thus challenging the assumption of unrelaxed strain all the way through the superlattice. The aim of this article is to link both effects to the increasing volume fraction of conducting layers close to the interface in series with the superlattice layers.

The basic concepts and phenomenology of wave mixing and harmonic generation are reviewed in context of the recent advances in the enhanced nonlinear activity in metamaterials and photonic crystals. The effects of dispersion, field confinement and phase synchronism are illustrated by the examples of the on-purpose designed artificial nonlinear structures. (c) 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The combinatorial frequency generation by a Fibonacci type quasi-periodic dielectric multilayered structure illuminated by two plane waves has been analysed. The effects of the layer parameters and Fibonacci sequence order on the properties of the combinatorial frequency waves emitted from the stacked nonlinear layers are discussed.

We study the entanglement of two impurity qubits immersed in a Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) reservoir. This open quantum system model allows for interpolation between a common dephasing scenario and an independent dephasing scenario by modifying the wavelength of the superlattice superposed to the BEC, and how this influences the dynamical properties of the impurities. We demonstrate the existence of rich dynamics corresponding to different values of reservoir parameters, including phenomena such as entanglement trapping, revivals of entanglement, and entanglement generation. In the spirit of reservoir engineering, we present the optimal BEC parameters for entanglement generation and trapping, showing the key role of the ultracold-gas interactions. We propose a scheme for the detection of quantum phase transitions in the one-dimensional (1D) Bose-Hubbard (BH) and 1D Extended Bose-Hubbard (EBH) models, using the nondemolition measurement technique of quantum polarization spectroscopy. We use collective measurements of the effective total angular momentum of a particular spatial mode to characterize the Mott insulator to superfluid phase transition in the BH model and the transition to a density wave state in the EBH model. We extend the application of collective measurements to the ground states at various deformations of a superlattice potential.
