Thin film Ba0.5Sr0.5TiO3 (BST) capacitors of thickness similar to75 nm to similar to1200 nm, with Au top electrodes and SrRuO 3 (SRO) or (La, Sr)CoO3 (LSCO) bottom electrodes were fabricated using Pulsed Laser Deposition. Implementing the "series capacitor model," bulk and interfacial capacitance properties were extracted as a function of temperature and frequency. 'Bulk' properties demonstrated typical ceramic behaviour, displaying little frequency dependence and a permittivity and loss peak at 250 K and 150 K respectively. The interfacial component was found to be relatively temperature and frequency independent for the LSCO/BST capacitors, but for the SRO/BST configuration the interfacial capacitance demonstrated moderate frequency and little temperature dependence below T similar to 300 K but a relatively strong frequency and temperature dependence above T similar to3 00 K. This was attributed to the thermal activation of a space charge component combined with a thermally independent background. The activation energy for the space charge was found to be E-A similar to 0.6 eV suggesting de-trapping of electrons from shallow level traps associated with a thin interfacial layer of oxygen vacancies, parallel to the electrodes.

This paper describes an experimental investigation of the behaviour of corroded reinforced concrete beams. These have been stored in a chloride environment for a period of 26 years under service loading so as to be representative of real structural and environmental conditions. The configuration and the widths of the cracks in the two seriously corroded short-span beams were depicted carefully, and then the beams were tested until failure by a three-point loading system. Another two beams of the same age but without corrosion were also tested as control specimens. A short span arrangement was chosen to investigate any effect of a reduction in the area and bond strength of the reinforcement on shear capacity. The relationship of load and deflection was recorded so as to better understand the mechanical behaviour of the corroded beams, together with the slip of the tensile bars. The corrosion maps and the loss of area of the tensile bars were also described after having extracted the corroded bars from the concrete beams. Tensile tests of the main longitudinal bars were also carried out. The residual mechanical behaviour of the beams is discussed in terms of the experimental results and the cracking maps. The results show that the corrosion of the reinforcement in the beams induced by chloride has a very important effect on the mechanical behaviour of the short-span beams, as loss of cross-sectional area and bond strength have a very significant effect on the bending capacity.

Carboxyl-terminal modulator protein (CTMP) is a tumor suppressor-like binding partner of Protein kinase B (PKB/Akt) that negative regulates this kinase. In the course of our recent work, we identified that CTMP is consistently associated with leucine zipper/EF-hand-containing transmembrane-1 (LETM1). Here, we report that adenovirus-LETM1 increased the sensitivity of HeLa cells to apoptosis, induced by either staurosporine or actinomycin D. As shown previously, LETM1 localized to the inner mitochondrial membrane. Electron-microscopy analysis of adenovirus-LETM1 transduced cells revealed that mitochondrial cristae were swollen in these cells, a phenotype similar to that observed in optic atrophy type-1 (OPA1)-ablated cells. OPA1 cleavage was increased in LETM1-overexpressing cells, and this phenotype was reversed by overexpression of OPA1 variant-7, a cleavage resistant form of OPA1. Taken together, these data suggest that LETM1 is a novel binding partner for CTMP that may play an important role in mitochondrial fragmentation via OPA1-cleavage. (C) 2009 Elsevier Inc. In trematodes, there is a family of proteins which combine EF-hand-containing domains with dynein light chain (DLC)-like domains. A member of this family from the liver fluke, Fasciola hepatica-FhCaBP4-has been identified and characterised biochemically. FhCaBP4 has an N-terminal domain containing two imperfect EF-hand sequences and a C-terminal dynein light chain-like domain. Molecular modelling predicted that the two domains are joined by a flexible linker. Native gel electrophoresis demonstrated that FhCaBP4 binds to calcium, manganese, barium and strontium ions, but not to magnesium or zinc ions. The hydrophobic, fluorescent probe 8-anilinonaphthalene-1-sulphonate bound more tightly to FhCaBP4 in the presence of calcium ions. This suggests that the protein undergoes a conformational change on ion binding which increases the number of non-polar residues on the surface. FhCaBP4 was protected from limited proteolysis by the calmodulin antagonist W7, but not by trifluoperazine or praziquantel. Protein-protein cross-linking experiments showed that FhCaBP4 underwent calcium ion-dependent dimerisation. Since DLCs are commonly dimeric, it is likely that FhCaBP4 dimerises through this domain. The molecular model reveals that the calcium ion-binding site is located close to a key sequence in the DLC-like domain, suggesting a plausible mechanism for calcium-dependent dimerisation.

To ascertain the response of the southern Greenland Ice Sheet (GIS) to a boreal summer climate warmer than at present, we explored whether southern Greenland was deglaciated during the Last Interglacial (LIG), using the Sr-Nd-Pb isotope ratios of silt-sized sediment discharged from southern Greenland. Our isotope data indicate that no single southern Greenland geologic terrane was completely deglaciated during the LIG, similar to the Holocene. Differences in sediment sources during the LIG relative to the early Holocene denote, however, greater southern GIS retreat during the LIG. These results allow the evaluation of a suite of GIS models and are consistent with a GIS contribution of 1.6 to 2.2 meters to the =4-meter LIG sea-level highstand, requiring a significant sea-level contribution from the Antarctic Ice Sheet.

A softened strut-and-tie macro model able to reproduce the flexural behaviour of
external beam-column joint is presented. The model is specific for concrete with hooked steel fibres (FRC) and it is designed to calculate the flexural response, as load-deflection curve, of a beam-column sub-assemblages. The model considers the presence of a constant vertical load acting on the column and of a monotonically increasing lateral force applied at the tip of the beam.

Epitaxial (001)-oriented 0.7Pb(Mg0.33Nb0.67)O3-0.3PbTiO3 (PMN-PT) thin films were deposited by pulsed laser deposition on vicinal SrTiO3 (001) substrates using La0.7Sr0.3MnO3 as bottom electrode. Detailed microstructural investigations of these films were carried out using X-ray diffraction (XRD), atomic force microscopy (AFM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Polarization-field hysteresis curves were measured at room temperature. Spontaneous polarization P s , remnant polarization P r and coercive voltage V c were found to be 25 μC/cm2, 15 μC/cm2 and 0.81 V, respectively. Field dependent dielectric constant measurements exhibited butterfly shaped curves, indicating the true ferroelectric nature of these films at room temperature. The dielectric constant and the dielectric loss at 100 kHz were found to be 238 and 0.14, respectively. The local piezoelectric properties of PMN-PT films were investigated by piezoelectric force microscopy and were found to exhibit a local piezoelectric coefficient of 7.8 pm/V.

A committee of the Mars Exploration Program Analysis Group (MEPAG) has reviewed and updated the description of Special Regions on Mars as places where terrestrial organisms might replicate (per the COSPAR Planetary Protection Policy). This review and update was conducted by an international team (SR-SAG2) drawn from both the biological science and Mars exploration communities, focused on understanding when and where Special Regions could occur. The study applied recently available data about martian environments and about terrestrial organisms, building on a previous analysis of Mars Special Regions (2006) undertaken by a similar team. Since then, a new body of highly relevant information has been generated from the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter (launched in 2005) and Phoenix (2007) and data from Mars Express and the twin Mars Exploration Rovers (all 2003). Results have also been gleaned from the Mars Science Laboratory (launched in 2011). In addition to Mars data, there is a considerable body of new data regarding the known environmental limits to life on Earth—including the potential for terrestrial microbial life to survive and replicate under martian environmental conditions. The SR-SAG2 analysis has included an examination of new Mars models relevant to natural environmental variation in water activity and temperature; a review and reconsideration of the current parameters used to define Special Regions; and updated maps and descriptions of the martian environments recommended for treatment as “Uncertain” or “Special” as natural features or those potentially formed by the influence of future landed spacecraft. Significant changes in our knowledge of the capabilities of terrestrial organisms and the existence of possibly habitable martian environments have led to a new appreciation of where Mars Special Regions may be identified and protected. The SR-SAG also considered the impact of Special Regions on potential future human missions to Mars, both as locations of potential resources and as places that should not be inadvertently contaminated by human activity. Shape memory alloys (SMAs) have the ability to undergo large deformations with minimum residual strain and also the extraordinary ability to undergo reversible hysteretic shape change known as the shape memory effect. The shape memory effect of these alloys can be utilised to develop a convenient way of actively confine concrete sections to improve their shear strength, flexural ductility and ultimate strain. Most of the previous work on active confinement of concrete using SMA has been carried out on circular sections. In this study retrofitting strategies for active confinement of non-circular sections have been proposed. The proposed schemes presented in this paper are conceived with an aim to seismically retrofit beam-column joints in non-seismically designed reinforced concrete buildings. SMAs are complex materials and their material behaviour depends on number of parameters. Depending upon the alloying elements, SMAs exhibit different behaviour in different conditions and are highly sensitive to variation in temperature, phase in which it is used, loading pattern, strain rate and pre-strain conditions. Therefore, a detailed discussion on the behaviour of SMAs under different thermo-mechanical conditions is presented first.

In this paper, Sr2Fe1.5Mo0.4Nb0.1O6-δ (SFMNb)-xSm0.2Ce0.8O2-δ (SDC) (x = 0, 20, 30, 40, 50 wt%) composite cathode materials were synthesized by a one-pot combustion method to improve the electrochemical performance of SFMNb cathode for intermediate temperature solid oxide fuel cells (IT-SOFCs). The fabrication of composite cathodes by adding SDC to SFMNb is conducive to providing extended electrochemical reaction zones for oxygen reduction reactions (ORR). X-ray diffraction (XRD) demonstrates that SFMNb is chemically compatible with SDC electrolytes at temperature up to 1100 °C. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) indicates that the SFMNb-SDC composite cathodes have a porous network nanostructure as well as the single phase SFMNb. The conductivity and thermal expansion coefficient of the composite cathodes decrease with the increased content of SDC, while the electrochemical impedance spectra (EIS) exhibits that SFMNb-40SDC composite cathode has optimal electrochemical performance with low polarization resistance (Rp) on the La0.9Sr0.1Ga0.8Mg0.2O3 electrolyte. The Rp of the SFMNb-40SDC composite cathode is about 0.047 Ω cm2 at 800 °C in air. A single cell with SFMNb-40SDC cathode also displays favorable discharge performance, whose maximum power density is 1.22 W cm-2 at 800 °C. All results indicate that SFMNb-40SDC composite material is a promising cathode candidate for IT-SOFCs.

Cobalt-free composite cathodes consisting of Pr0.6Sr0.4FeO 3-δ -xCe0.9Pr0.1O 2-δ (PSFO-xCPO, x = 0-50 wt%) have been synthesized using a one-pot method. X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, thermal expansion coefficient, conductivity, and polarization resistance (R P ) have been used to characterize the PSFO-xCPO cathodes. Furthermore the discharge performance of the Ni-SSZ/SSZ/GDC/PSFO-xCPO cells has been measured. The experimental results indicate that the PSFO-xCPO composite materials fully consist of PSFO and CPO phases and posses a porous microstructure. The conductivity of PSFO-xCPO decreases with the increase of CPO content, but R P of PSFO-40CPO shows the smallest value amongst all the samples. The power density of single cells with a PSFO-40CPO composite cathode is significantly improved compared with that of the PSFO cathode, exhibiting 0.43, 0.75, 1.08 and 1.30 W cm-2 at 650, 700, 750 and 800 °C, respectively. In addition, single cells with the PSFO-40CPO composite cathode show a stable performance with no obvious degradation over 100 h when operating at 750 °C.
