Concentrations of the coccidiostat nicarbazin as low as 2 mg/kg in feed can result in violative drug residues arising in poultry liver. A lateral flow device (LFD) was developed for the detection of contaminating concentrations of nicarbazin following solvent extraction of poultry feeds. Test results, as determined by both visual and instrumental measurement, are available within minutes. For 22 feed samples, nicarbazin-free and fortified at 2 mg/kg, the % relative inhibition ranged from 0 to 45% and from 53 to 85%, respectively. Nicarbazin contamination at the critical concentration (2 mg/kg) can be determined in all cases providing the sampling is representative. A wide range of feed samples taken at a mill that incorporated nicarbazin into poultry feed were analyzed. Data generated for these samples by both the LFDs and a mass spectrometric method were compared, and a significant correlation was achieved.

This chapter examines some aspects of the environmental
context for the constructional activity observed at Deer
Park Farms (DPF). This can be done at several levels by
observing what dendrochronology suggests in terms of
environment and environmental change across the period
from around AD 500 to 1000. Looking at the broad sweep
of tree growth across the period, something not previously
attempted, we can make comparisons between tree
growth in Ireland and elsewhere in Europe. We can study
abrupt events in the records and draw on information
from other sources in an attempt to paint a picture of the
period against which to view the constructional activity
on the site itself. It is worth remarking that there is no
blueprint for this work. Most of the information used has
only recently been produced and it is largely independent
of conventional history.

This paper investigates the control and operation of doubly-fed induction generator (DFIG) and fixed-speed induction generator (FSIG) based wind farms under unbalanced grid conditions. A DFIG system model suitable for analyzing unbalanced operation is developed, and used to assess the impact of an unbalanced supply on DFIG and FSIG operation. Unbalanced voltage at DFIG and FSIG terminals can cause unequal heating on the stator windings, extra mechanical stresses and output power fluctuations. These problems are particularly serious for the FSIG-based wind farm without a power electronic interface to the grid. To improve the stability of a wind energy system containing both DFIG and FSIG based wind farms during network unbalance, a control strategy of unbalanced voltage compensation by the DFIG systems is proposed. The DFIG system compensation ability and the impact of transmission network impedance are illustrated. The simulation results implemented in Matlab/Simulink show that the proposed DFIG control system improves not only its own performance, but also the stability of the FSIG system with the same grid connection point during network unbalance.

Monensin, a carboxylic acid ionophore, is commonly fed to poultry to control coccidiosis. A method for rapid analysis of unextracted poultry plasma samples has been developed based on a novel immunoassay format: one-step all-in-one dry reagent time resolved fluorimetry. All assay specific components were pre-dried onto microtitration plate wells. Only addition of the serum sample diluted in assay buffer was required to perform analysis. Results were available one hour after sample addition. The limit of detection (mean + 3s) of the assay calculated from the analysis of 23 known negative samples was 14.2 ng ml(-1). Intra- and inter-assay RSD were determined as 15.2 and 7.4%, respectively, using a plasma sample fortified with 50 ng ml(-1) monensin. Eight broiler chickens were fed monensin at a dose rate of 120 mg kg(-1) feed for one week, blood sampled then slaughtered without drug withdrawal. Plasma monensin concentrations, as determined by the fluoroimmunoassay ranged from 101-297 ng ml(-1). This compared with monensin liver concentrations, determined by LC-MS, which ranged fi om 13-41 ng g(-1). The fluoroimmunoassay described is extremely user friendly, gives particularly rapid results and is suitable for the detection and quantification of plasma monensin residues. Data from medicated poultry suggest that analysis of plasma may be useful in predicting the extent of monensin liver residues.

Finding a ‘solution’ for the seemingly intractable problem of unemployment in post-Napoleonic rural England was the Holy Grail for many vestries. Yet, whilst we know much about the depth and consequences of unemployment, parish-driven schemes to set the poor to work have been subjected to remarkably little in the way of systematic study. This paper focuses on one such policy that remains entirely obscure: parish farms, the hiring of pre-existing farms or fields by the parish on which to employ those out of work. Bearing a ‘family resemblance’ to allotments and other land-based attempts to alleviate poverty, parish farms were unique in that they were managed in all regards by the parish and were an employment strategy as opposed to a scheme to supplement the incomes of the poor. Whilst the archive of parish farms is often frustratingly opaque, it is shown that before they were effectively outlawed by the passing of the New Poor Law, many southern parishes, especially in the Weald of Kent and Sussex, adopted the scheme, occasionally with great success.

A survey was carried out on the occurrence of dinitrocarbanilide (DNC), the marker residue for nicarbazin, in poultry produced in Ireland during 2002-2004. Liver (n = 736) and breast muscle samples (n = 342) were tested. DNC residues were found in 40 and 26% of liver and breast muscle samples at levels greater than 12.5 and 5 mu g kg(-1), respectively. DNC residues were found at >200 mu g kg(-1) in 12 and 0% of liver and muscle samples, respectively. Samples of breast muscle (n = 217) imported from 11 countries were also tested for DNC residues. A lower incidence of DNC residues (6%) was found in imported breast muscle. Egg samples (n = 546) were tested and DNC residues were found in nine samples, with levels ranging between 14 and 122 mu g kg(-1). Analysis of poultry, carried out as part of official food inspection in the period 2004-2006, indicated a reduction in the number of broiler liver samples containing DNC at >200 mu g kg(-1), to approximately 7%. Investigations were undertaken to identify causes for the occurrence of high levels of the zootechnical feed additive nicarbazin in broiler liver at slaughter. The first investigation on 32 commercial broiler flocks involved sampling and analysis for nicarbazin ( as dinitrocarbanilide, DNC) in liver from birds during a 3-10-day period after withdrawal of nicarbazin from their feed and before commercial slaughter. DNC residues in liver samples of broilers scheduled as being withdrawn from nicarbazin for >= 6 days ranged from 20 to > 1600 mu g kg(-1) ( the specified withdrawal period for nicarbazin is 5 days and the Joint Expert Committee on Food Additives (JECFA)maximum residue limit (MRL) is 200 mu g kg(-1) liver). Further on-farm investigations on 12 of these flocks, selected on the basis of the feeding system in use and the levels of DNC residues determined in liver, identified issues in feed management contributing to elevated residues in broiler liver.
