Palladium, platinum bimetallic catalysts supported on η-Al2O3, ZSM-5(23) and ZSM-5(80), with and without the addition of TiO2, were prepared and used for low temperature total methane oxidation (TMO). The catalysts were tested under reaction temperatures of 200-500 °C with a GHSV of 100,000 mL g-1 h-1. It was found that all four components, palladium, platinum, an acidic support and oxygen carrier were needed to achieve a highly active and stable catalyst. The optimum support being 17.5% TiO2 on ZSM-5(80) where the T10% was observed at only 200 °C. On addition of platinum, longer time on stream experiments showed no decrease in the catalyst activity over 50 h at 250 °C.

Background: The treatment of solid tumours and angiogenic ocular diseases by photodynamic therapy (PDT) requires the injection of a photosensitiser (PS) to destroy target cells through a combination of visible light irradiation and molecular oxygen. There is currently great interest in the development of efficient and specific carrier delivery platforms for systemic PDT. Objective: This article aims to review recent developments in systemic carrier delivery platforms for PDT, with an emphasis on target specificity. Methods: Recent publications, spanning the last five years, concerning delivery carrier platforms for systemic PDT were reviewed, including PS conjugates, dendrimers, micelles, liposomes and nanoparticles. Results/conclusion: PS conjugates and supramolecular delivery platforms can improve PDT selectivity by exploiting cellular and physiological specificities of the targeted tissue. Overexpression of receptors in cancer and angiogenic endothelial cells allows their targeting by affinity-based moieties for the selective uptake of PS conjugates and encapsulating delivery carriers, while the abnormal tumour neovascularisation induces a specific accumulation of heavy weighted PS carriers by enhanced permeability and retention (EPR) effect. in addition, polymeric prodrug delivery platforms triggered by the acidic nature of the tumour environment or the expression of proteases can be designed. Promising results obtained with recent systemic carrier platforms will, in due course, be translated into the clinic for highly efficient and selective PDT protocols.

AimsThe main aim of this study was to determine the virucidal inactivation efficacy of an in-house-designed atmospheric pressure, nonthermal plasma jet operated at varying helium/oxygen feed gas concentrations against MS2 bacteriophage, widely employed as a convenient surrogate for human norovirus.

Methods and ResultsThe effect of variation of percentage oxygen concentration in the helium (He) carrier gas was studied and found to positively correlate with MS2 inactivation rate, indicating a role for reactive oxygen species (ROS) in viral inactivation. The inactivation rate constant increased with increasing oxygen concentrations up to 075% O-2. 3 log(10) (999%) reductions in MS2 viability were achieved after 3min of exposure to the plasma source operated in a helium/oxygen (9925%:075%) gas mixture, with >7 log(10) reduction after 9min exposure.

ConclusionsAtmospheric pressure, nonthermal plasmas may have utility in the rapid disinfection of virally contaminated surfaces for infection control applications.

Significance and Impact of StudyThe atmospheric pressure, nonthermal plasma jet employed in this study exhibits rapid virucidal activity against a norovirus surrogate virus, the MS2 bacteriophage, which is superior to previously published inactivation rates for chemical disinfectants.

There is considerable disagreement in the literature on available oxygen storage capacity, and on the reaction rates associated with the storage process, for three-way automotive catalysts. This paper seeks to address the issue of oxygen storage capacity in a clear and precise manner. The work described involved a detailed investigation of oxygen storage capacity in typical samples of automotive catalysts. The capacity has also been precisely defined and estimates have been made of the specific capacity based on catalyst dimensions. A purpose-built miniature catalyst test rig has been assembled to allow measurement of the capacity and the experimental procedure has been developed to ensure accurate measurement. The measurements from the first series of experiments have been compared with the theoretical calculations and good agreement is seen. A second series of experiments allowed the effect of temperature on oxygen storage capacity to be investigated. This work shows very clearly the large variation of the capacity with temperature.
