First-order time remaining until a moving observer will pass an environmental element is optically specified in two different ways. The specification provided by global tau (based on the pattern of change of angular bearing) requires that the element is stationary and that the direction of motion is accurately detected, whereas the specification provided by composite tau (based on the patterns of change of optical size and optical distance) does not require either of these. We obtained converging evidence, for our hypothesis. that observers are sensitive to composite tau in four experiments involving, relative judgments of, time to, passage with forced-choice methodology. Discrimination performance was enhanced in the presence of a local expansion component, while being unaffected when the detection of the direction of heading was impaired. Observers relied on the information carried in composite tau rather than on the information carried in its constituent components. Finally, performance was similar under conditions of observer motion and conditions of object motion. Because composite tau specifies first-order time remaining for a large number of situations, the different ways in which it may be detected are discussed.

An effective ellipsometric technique to determine parameters that characterize second-harmonic optical and magneto-optical effects in centrosymmetric media within the electric-dipole approximation is proposed and outlined in detail. The parameters, which are ratios of components of the nonlinear-surface-susceptibility tensors, are obtained from experimental data related to the state of polarization of the second-harmonic-generated radiation as a function of the angle between the plane of incidence and the polarization plane of the incident, linearly polarized, fundamental radiation. Experimental details of the technique are described. A corresponding theoretical model is given as an example for a single isotropic surface assuming polycrystalline samples. The surfaces of air-Au and air-Ni (in magnetized and demagnetized states) have been investigated ex situ in ambient air, and the results are presented. A nonlinear, least-squares-minimization fitting procedure between experimental data and theoretical formulas has been shown to yield realistic, unambiguous results for the ratios corresponding to each of the above materials. Independent methods for verifying the validity of the fitting parameters are also presented. The influence of temporal variations at the surfaces on the state of polarization (due to adsorption, contamination, or oxidation) is also illustrated for the demagnetized air-Ni surface. A simple and original mechanism to control the polarisation of uniform hybrid waveguide-planar leaky-wave antennas is proposed. The operation is based on introducing simple modifications of the planar dimensions of the structure cross-section, which is shown to control the horizontal and vertical components of the radiated fields. The proposed antenna dispenses with the need for periodic elements, commonly used in flexible polarised leaky-wave antennas, and therefore significantly reduces the design complexity. Parametric curves have been obtained to assist in the simple and efficient design of the proposed antenna. The novel mechanism is illustrated by means of several antenna prototypes operating at 5.7 GHz, producing linear, elliptical and circular polarisations. Commercial three-dimensional Finite Element Method has been used for the simulations, and the results are validated with experimental testing.[br].

A novel 3rd-order compact E-plane ridge waveguide filter is presented. Miniaturization is achieved upon introducing a configuration of parallel-coupled E-plane ridge waveguide resonators. Furthermore, the proposed filter allows for transmission zeros at finite frequencies. Fabrication simplicity and mass producibility of standard E-plane filters is maintained. The numerical and experimental results are presented to validate the proposed configuration. A miniaturisation factor of 2 and very sharp upper cutoff are achieved. 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

A ridged-waveguide diplexer incorporating integrated compact ridged-waveguide filters and a ridged-waveguide T-junction is presented. The compact size of the filter is achieved by integrating of bandpass periodic filter, and a low-pass structure is used in order to suppress spurious responses. Simulation using the mode-matching method has been carried out for ridge-waveguide filters and T junctions and the results are presented. The measured results are in good agreement with the simulated results. (C) 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

Novel periodically loaded E-plane waveguide resonators are presented in this paper. The proposed resonators make use of the slow-wave effect in order to achieve significantly increased loaded Q values for resonators of constant volume, as compared to their homogeneous counterparts, without introducing any complexity in the fabrication process. Numerical and experimental results are presented to validate the argument. (C) 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

The upper and lower bounds on the actual solution of any microwave structure is of general interest. The purpose of this letter is to compare some calculations using the mode-matching and finite-element methods, with some measurements on a 180 degrees ridge waveguide insert between standard WR62 rectangular waveguides. The work suggests that the MMM produces an upper bound, while the FEM places a lower bound on the measurement. (C) 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Raman satellites have been observed in the scattering of a Nd:YAG laser (532 nm) from a laser-ablated Mg plasma plume. We identify them as originating from transitions between the fine-structure components of the metastable 3s3p P-3(0,1,2) level of Mg. We have calculated the cross sections for Raman and Rayleigh scattering from the metastable state. Comparison of the expected ratio of the satellites to the Rayleigh peak indicates the changing population fraction of the metastable states in the plume.

We present simultaneous and continuous observations of the Halpha, Hbeta, He I D-3, Na I D-1,D-2 doublet and the Ca II H&K lines for the RS CVn system HR 1099. The spectroscopic observations were obtained during the MUSICOS 1998 campaign involving several observatories and instruments, both echelle and long-slit spectrographs. During this campaign, HR 1099 was observed almost continuously for more than 8 orbits of 2.(d)8. Two large optical flares were observed, both showing an increase in the emission of Halpha, Ca II H K, Hbeta and He I D-3 and a strong filling-in of the Na I D-1, D-2 doublet. Contemporary photometric observations were carried out with the robotic telescopes APT-80 of Catania and Phoenix-25 of Fairborn Observatories. Maps of the distribution of the spotted regions on the photosphere of the binary components were derived using the Maximum Entropy and Tikhonov photometric regularization criteria. Rotational modulation was observed in Halpha and He I D-3 in anti-correlation with the photometric light curves. Both flares occurred at the same binary phase (0.85), suggesting that these events took place in the same active region. Simultaneous X-ray observations, performed by ASM on board RXTE, show several flare-like events, some of which correlate well with the observed optical flares. Rotational modulation in the X-ray light curve has been detected with minimum flux when the less active G5 V star was in front. A possible periodicity in the X-ray flare-like events was also found.

We present contemporary optical and infrared spectroscopic observations of the type IIn SN 1998S covering the period between 3 and 127 days after discovery. During the first week the spectra are characterized by prominent broad H, He and C III/N III emission lines with narrow peaks, superimposed on a very blue continuum (T similar to 24 000 K). In the following two weeks the C III/N III emission vanished, together with the broad emission components of the H and He lines. Broad, blueshifted absorption components appeared in the spectra. The temperature of the continuum also dropped to similar to 14000 K. By the end of the first month the spectrum comprised broad, blueshifted absorptions in H, He, Si II, Fe II and Sc II. By day 44, broad emission components in H and He reappeared in the spectra. These persisted to as late as days similar to 100-130, becoming increasingly asymmetric. We agree with Leonard et al. that the broad emission lines indicate interaction between the ejecta and circumstellar material (CSM) emitted by the progenitor. We also agree that the progenitor of SN 1998S appears to have gone through at least two phases of mass-loss, giving rise to two CSM zones. Examination of the spectra indicates that the inner zone extended to less than or equal to 90 au, while the outer CSM extended from 185 an to over 1800 au.

The excitation of surface plasmon-polariton (SPP) waveguide modes in subwavelength dielectric ridges deposited on a thin gold film has been characterized and optimized at telecommunication wavelengths. The experimental data on the electromagnetic mode structure obtained using scanning near-field optical microscopy have been directly compared to full vectorial three-dimensional finite element method simulations. Two excitation geometries have been investigated where SPPs are excited outside or inside the dielectric tapered region adjoint to the waveguide. The dependence of the efficiency of the SPP guided mode excitation on the taper opening angle has been measured and modeled. Single-mode guiding and strong lateral mode confinement of dielectric-loaded SPP waveguide modes have been characterized with the near-field measurements and compared to the effective-index method model.

We present a simple method of forming a switchable radar cross-section (RCS) in evanescent waveguide. Here, the antenna can be selected to be matched to free space, or to act as an almost perfect reflector of incident energy via a single SPST switch located at the antenna aperture. With the aperture switch open, the antenna is matched over a measured bandwidth of 17.5%, from 2.35 to 2.8 GHz, for reflection coefficient <-10 dB, in 2.725 GHz cutoff waveguide. With the aperture switch closed, a minimum reflection coefficient of -2.5 dB across the bandwidth is observed, proving that the antenna has the capacity to be made RCS reconfigurable. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. We investigate the magneto-optical properties of a nanostructured metamaterial comprised of arrays of nickel nanorods embedded in an anodized aluminum oxide template. The rods are grown using a self-assembly bottom-up technique that provides a uniform, quasi-hexagonal array over a large area, quickly and at low cost. The tuneability of the magneto-optic response of the material is investigated by varying the nanorod dimensions: diameter, length and inter-rod spacing as well as the overall thickness of the template. It is demonstrated that the system acts as a sub-wavelength light trap with enhanced magneto-optical properties occurring at reflectivity minima corresponding to photonic resonances of the metamaterial. Changes in dimensions of the nickel rods on the order of tens of nanometers cause a spectral blue-shift in the peak magneto-optical response of 270 nm in the visible range. A plasmonic enhancement is also observed at lower wavelengths, which becomes increasingly damped with larger diameters and increased volume fraction of nickel inclusions. This type of structure has potential applications in high density magneto-optical data storage (up to 1011–12 rods per square inch), ultrafast magneto-plasmonic switching and optical components for telecommunications.

In this work we present core–shell nanowire arrays of gold coated with a nanometric layer of cobalt. Despite the extremely small Co volume, these core–shell nanowires display large magneto-optical activity and plasmonic resonance determined by the geometry of the structure. Therefore, we are able to tune both the plasmonic and magneto-optical response in the visible range. Through optical and ellipsometric measurements in transmission, and applying a magnetic field to the sample, it is possible to modulate the value of the phase angle (Del {Δ}) between the S and P polarised components. It was found that the core–shell sample produced an order of magnitude larger variation in Del with changing magnetic field direction, compared with hollow cobalt tubes. The enhancement of magneto optical properties through the plasmonic nature of the gold core is complemented with the ability to induce magnetic influence over optical properties via an externally applied field. Moreover, we demonstrate for the first time the ability to use the remanent magnetisation of the Co, in conjunction with the optical properties defined by the Au, to observe remanent optical states in this uniquely designed structure. This new class of magnetoplasmonic metamaterial has great potential in a wide range of applications, from bio-sensing to data storage due to the tuneable nature of multiple resonance modes and dual functionality.

Here we consider the numerical optimization of active surface plasmon polariton (SPP) trench waveguides suited for integration with luminescent polymers for use as highly localized SPP source devices in short-scale communication integrated circuits. The numerical analysis of the SPP modes within trench waveguide systems provides detailed information on the mode field components, effective indices, propagation lengths and mode areas. Such trench waveguide systems offer extremely high confinement with propagation on length scales appropriate to local interconnects, along with high efficiency coupling of dipolar emitters to waveguided plasmonic modes which can be close to 80%. The large Purcell factor exhibited in these structures will further lead to faster modulation capabilities along with an increased quantum yield beneficial for the proposed plasmon-emitting diode, a plasmonic analog of the light-emitting diode. The confinement of studied guided modes is on the order of 50 nm and the delay over the shorter 5 μm length scales will be on the order of 0.1 ps for the slowest propagating modes of the system, and significantly less for the faster modes.
