Distorted-wave Born approximation calculations for Ps formation in positron impact on He, Ne, Ar, Kr and Xe are reported for the energy range up to 200 eV. Capture into the n = 1, 2 and 3 states of Ps is calculated explicitly and 1/n(3) scaling is used to estimate capture into states with n > 3. The calculations for the heavier noble gases allow for capture not only from the outer np(6) shell of the atom but also from the first inner ns(2) shell. However, the inner shell capture is found to be very small. Although by no means unambiguous, the calculations provide some support to the conjecture of Larrichia et al. [J. Phys. B 35 (2002) 2525] that the double peak and shoulder structures observed experimentally for Ps formation in Ar, Kr and Xe arise from formation in excited states. (C) 2004 Elsevier B.V. Abstract The prostanoid biosynthetic enzyme cyclooxygenase-2 (Cox-2) is upregulated in several neuroendocrine tumors. The aim of the current study was to employ a neuroendocrine cell (PC12) model of Cox-2 over-expression to identify gene products that might be implicated in the oncogenic and/or inflammatory actions of this enzyme in the setting of neuroendocrine neoplasia. Expression array and real-time PCR analysis demonstrated that levels of the neuroendocrine marker chromogranin A (CGA) were 2-fold and 3.2-fold higher, respectively, in Cox-2 over-expressing cells (PCXII) vs their control (PCMT) counterparts. Immunocytochemical and immunoblotting analyses confirmed that both intracellular and secreted levels of CGA were elevated in response to Cox-2 induction. Moreover, exogenous addition of prostaglandin E2 (1uÃ?ÂM), mimicked this effect in PCMT cells, while treatment of PCXII cells with the Cox-2 selective inhibitor NS-398 (100 nM) reduced CGA expression levels, thereby confirming the biospecificity of this finding. Levels of neurone specific enolase (NSE) were similar in the two cell lines, suggesting that the effect of Cox-2 on CGA expression was specific and not due to a global enhancement of neuroendocrine marker expression/differentiation. Cox-2-dependent CGA upregulation was associated with significantly increased chromaffin granule number and intracellular and secreted levels of dopamine. CGA promoter-driven reporter gene expression studies provided evidence that prostaglandin E2-dependent upregulation required a proximal cAMP-responsive element (CRE; -71 - -64 bp). This study is the first to demonstrate that Cox-2 upregulates both CGA expression and bioactivity in a neuroendocrine cell line and has major implications for the role of this polypeptide in the pathogenesis of neuroendocrine cancers in which Cox-2 is upregulated.

The use of laser-accelerated protons as a particle probe for the detection of electric fields in plasmas has led in recent years to a wealth of novel information regarding the ultrafast plasma dynamics following high intensity laser-matter interactions. The high spatial quality and short duration of these beams have been essential to this purpose. We will discuss some of the most recent results obtained with this diagnostic at the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory (UK) and at LULI - Ecole Polytechnique (France), also applied to conditions of interest to conventional Inertial Confinement Fusion. In particular, the technique has been used to measure electric fields responsible for proton acceleration from solid targets irradiated with ps pulses, magnetic fields formed by ns pulse irradiation of solid targets, and electric fields associated with the ponderomotive channelling of ps laser pulses in under-dense plasmas.

The novel ligand 4'-diferrocenylallcyne-2,2':6',2 ''-terpyridine (7; Fc-C C-Fc-tpy; tpy = terpyridyl; Fc = ferrocenyl) and its Ru2+ complexes 8-10 have been synthesized and characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, cyclic voltammetry, and UV-vis and luminescence spectroscopy. Electrochemical data and UV absorption and emission spectra indicate that the insertion of an ethynyl group causes delocalization of electrons in the extended pi* orbitals. Cyclic voltammetric measurements of 7 show two successive reversible one-electron-oxidation processes with half-wave potentials of 0.53 and 0.78 V. The small variations of the E-1/2 values for the Fe2+/Fe3+ redox couples after the coordination of the Ru2+ ion suggest a weak interaction between the Ru2+ and Fe2+ centers. After insertion of an ethynyl group, UV-vis absorption spectra show a red shift of the absorption peak of the (1)[(d(pi)(Fe))(6)]->(1)[(d(pi)(Fe))(5)(pi*(Ru)(tpy))(1)] MMLCT of the Ru2+ complexes. The Ru2+ complex 8 exhibits the strongest luminescence intensity (lambda(em)(max) 712 nm, Phi(em) = 2.63 x 10(-4), tau = 323 ns) relative to analogous ferrocene-based terpyridine Ru(II) complexes in H2O/CH3CN (4/1 v/v) solution.

Increased prevalence of diabetes in the community has been accompanied by an increase in diabetes in hospitalised patients. About a quarter of these patients experience a hypoglycaemic episode during their admission, which is associated with increased risk of mortality and length of stay. This article examines the aetiology, pathophysiology, diagnosis and treatment of type 2 diabetes using a case study approach. The psychosocial implications for the patient are also discussed. The case study is based on a patient with diabetes who was admitted to hospital following a hypoglycaemic episode and cared for during a practice placement. The importance of early diagnosis of diabetes and the adverse effects of delayed diagnosis are discussed.
