We report on the non-volatile resistive switching properties of epitaxial nickel oxide (NiO) nanostructures, 10-100 nm wide and up to 30 nm high grown on (001)-Nb:SrTiO3 substrates. Conducting-atomic force microscopy on individual nano-islands confirms prominent bipolar switching with a maximum ON/OFF ratio of similar to 10(3) at a read voltage of similar to+0.4V. This ratio is found to decrease with increasing height of the nanostructure. Linear fittings of I-V loops reveal that low and high resistance states follow Ohmic-conduction and Schottky-emission mechanism, respectively. The switching behavior (dependence on height) is attributed to the modulation of the carrier density at the nanostructure-substrate interface due to the applied electric field.

Evidence of 11-year Schwabe solar sunspot cycles, El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) and the Pacific Decadal Oscillation (PDO) were detected in an annual record of diatomaceous laminated sediments from anoxic Effingham Inlet, Vancouver Island, British Columbia. Radiometric dating and counting of annual varves dates the sediments from AD 1947-1993. Intact sediment slabs were X-rayed for sediment structure (lamina thickness and composition based on gray-scale), and subsamples were examined for diatom abundances and for grain size. Wavelet analysis reveals the presence of ~2-3, ~4.5, ~7 and ~9-12-year cycles in the diatom record and an w11e13 year record in the sedimentary varve thickness record. These cycle lengths suggest that both ENSO and the sunspot cycle had an influence on primary productivity and sedimentation patterns. Sediment grain size could not be correlated to the sunspot cycle although a peak in the grain size data centered around the mid-1970s may be related to the 1976-1977 Pacific climate shift, which occurred when the PDO index shifted from negative (cool conditions) to positive (warm conditions). Additional evidence of the PDO regime shift is found in wavelet and cross-wavelet results for Skeletonema costatum, a weakly silicified variant of S. costatum, annual precipitation and April to June precipitation. Higher spring (April/May) values of the North Pacific High pressure index during sunspot minima suggest that during this time, increased cloud cover and concomitant suppression of the Aleutian Low (AL) pressure system led to strengthened coastal upwelling and enhanced diatom production earlier in the year. These results suggest that the 11-year solar cycle, amplified by cloud cover and upwelling changes, as well as ENSO, exert significant influence on marine primary productivity in the northeast Pacific. The expression of these cyclic phenomena in the sedimentary record were in turn modulated by the phase of PDO, as indicated by the change in period of ENSO and suppression of the solar signal in the record after the 1976-1977 regime shift. © 2013 Elsevier Ltd and INQUA. Bias-induced oxygen ion dynamics underpins a broad spectrum of electroresistive and memristive phenomena in oxide materials. Although widely studied by device-level and local voltage-current spectroscopies, the relationship between electroresistive phenomena, local electrochemical behaviors, and microstructures remains elusive. Here, the interplay between history-dependent electronic transport and electrochemical phenomena in a NiO single crystalline thin film with a number of well-defined defect types is explored on the nanometer scale using an atomic force microscopy-based technique. A variety of electrochemically-active regions were observed and spatially resolved relationship between the electronic and electrochemical phenomena was revealed. The regions with pronounced electroresistive activity were further correlated with defects identified by scanning transmission electron microscopy. Using fully coupled mechanical-electrochemical modeling, we illustrate that the spatial distribution of strain plays an important role in electrochemical and electroresistive phenomena. These studies illustrate an approach for simultaneous mapping of the electronic and ionic transport on a single defective structure level such as dislocations or interfaces, and pave the way for creating libraries of defect-specific electrochemical responses.

Uniform submicron La2NiO4+δ (sm-LNO) powders have been synthesized by a facile polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP)-assisted hydrothermal route. In the presence of PVP, sm-LNO of pure phase has been obtained by calcination at the relatively low temperature of 900 °C for 8 h. Compared micron-sized LNO (m-LNO) particles obtained at 1,000 °C by hydrothermal synthesis route without PVP assisted, the sm-LNO-PVP displays regularly shaped and well-distributed particles in the range of 0.3–0.5 μm. The scanning electron microscopy (SEM) results showed that the sm-LNO sample is submicronic and that the m-LNO sample shows agglomerates with a broad size distribution. The electrochemical performance of m-LNO and sm-LNO-PVP has been investigated by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. The polarization resistance of the sm-LNO-PVP cathode reaches a value of 0.40 Ω cm2 at 750 °C, which is lower than that of m-LNO (0.62 Ω cm2). This result indicates that a fine electrode microstructure with submicron particles can help to increase the active sites, accelerate oxygen diffusion, and reduce polarization resistance. An anode-supported single cell with sm-LNO cathode has been fabricated and tested over a temperature range from 650 to 800 °C. The maximum power density of the cell has achieved 834 mW cm−2 at 750 °C. These results therefore show that this PVP-assisted hydrothermal method is an effective approach to construct submicron-structured cathode and enhance the performance of intermediate temperature solid oxide fuel cell.

In this work NiO/3mol% Y2O3-ZrO2 (3YSZ) and NiO/8mol% Y2O3-ZrO2 (8YSZ) hollow fibers were prepared by phase-inversion. The effect of different kinds of YSZ (3YSZ and 8YSZ) on the porosity, electrical conductivity, shrinkage and flexural strength of the hollow fibers were systematically evaluated. When compared with Ni-8YSZ the porosity and shrinkage of Ni-3YSZ hollow fibers increases while the electrical conductivity decreases, while at the same time also exhibiting enhanced flexural strength. Single cells with Ni-3YSZ and Ni-8YSZ hollow fibers as the supported anode were successfully fabricated showing maximum power densities of 0.53 and 0.67Wcm-2 at 800°C, respectively. Furthermore, in order to improve the cell performance, a Ni-8YSZ anode functional layer was added between the electrolyte and Ni-YSZ hollow fiber. Here enhanced peak power densities of 0.79 and 0.73Wcm-2 were achieved at 800°C for single cells with Ni-3YSZ and Ni-8YSZ hollow fibers, respectively.
