New results on a classical operator

It is remarkable how the classical Volterra integral operator, which was one of the first operators which attracted mathematicians' attention, is still worth of being studied. In this essentially survey work, by collecting some of the very recent results related to the Volterra operator, we show that there are new (and not so new) concepts that are becoming known only at the present days. Discovering whether the Volterra operator satisfies or not a given operator property leads to new methods and ideas that are useful in the setting of Concrete Operator Theory as well as the one of General Operator Theory. In particular, a wide variety of techniques like summability kernels, theory of entire functions, Gaussian cylindrical measures, approximation theory, Laguerre and Legendre polynomials are needed to analyze different properties of the Volterra operator. Norberg-Schulz’ Elements of Space in Dark City

Alex Proyas' science fiction film Dark City (1998) puts forth questions about the building process of a city. The aliens in the film constantly alter each street, building and room to create the right environment for humans to dwell. The ‘strangers’ believe that they need to study humans in their spaces to understand human nature. They use bits and pieces of people's memories to reconstruct the city.

Christian Norberg-Schulz identifies four elements of space: physical, perceptual, existential and conceptual. Physical space is physical existence as it is. Perceptual space is the temporary space the user perceives. Existential space, for instance, the meaning of the concept of home, is abstract and permanent; it does not change with changing conditions. Finally, conceptual space, in his spatial philosophy, is the space concept of specialists like architects, economists and mathematicians.

This article analyses the future noir environment of Dark City from a spatial perspective. The notion of building is studied as to physical, perceptual, existential and conceptual spaces of Norberg-Schulz through concepts of home, identity, belonging, and alienation with reference to the architecture of the city.

William Smith - 200 years of geomodelling celebrated at IAMG

The International Association for Mathematical Geosciences (IAMG) commemorated William Smith (23rd March 1769 - 28th August 1839) and 200 years of geomodelling with geological surveys and academics across the globe at the 17th annual conference of the IAMG in Freiberg, Germany from the 5th to 13th September 2015. The aim of the IAMG is to promote the use of mathematics, statistics and geoinformatics in the geosciences. The annual IAMG conference is an opportunity for geoscientists to collaborate with mathematicians and statisticians and present their recent work. The

17th annual IAMG conference, with 300 participants from across the world, differed from previous IAMG conferences in that it included a special ‘Day of Surveys’ to acknowledge 200 years of science and methodologies to construct maps.
