Benevolent Patriotism: Art, Dissent and the American Effect

This article examines the role of contemporary art in a post-9/11 context through The American Effect exhibition at the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York in 2003. This exhibition displayed a range of artworks from around the world that specifically engaged with, commented upon and interrogated the USA's pre-eminent position as a global superpower. In the politically charged climate after 9/11, the exhibition offered itself as a critical voice amid the more obvious patriotic clamour: it was one of the places where Americans could ask (and answer) the question, `Why do they hate us so much?' Although The American Effect claimed to be a space of dissent, it ultimately failed to question, let alone challenge, US global hegemony. Instead, the exhibition articulated a benevolent patriotism that forced artwork from other nations into supplicating and abject positions, and it obscured the complex discursive networks that connect artists, curators, critics, audiences and art museums.

Thermographic investigation of contemporary resin-containing dental materials

This is the sixth paper that I have published involving thermography. In this research we were using thermogrphy to measure the temperature increases generated during photocuring of a range of clinical materials. The materials investigated were all commonly used products. The work also investigated the insulation potential of various thicknesses of human dentine when placed between the curing materials and the thermal imaging camera. From a clinical perspective this work may be used to influence the methods used to place restorative dental materials

The Global Politics of Contemporary Travel Writing

To what extent do bestselling travel books, such as those by Paul <br/>Theroux, Bill Bryson, Bruce Chatwin and Michael Palin, tell us as <br/>much about world politics as newspaper articles, policy documents and <br/>press releases? Debbie Lisle argues that the formulations of genre, <br/>identity, geopolitics and history at work in contemporary travel writing <br/>are increasingly at odds with a cosmopolitan and multicultural world in <br/>which ‘everybody travels’. Despite the forces of globalisation, common <br/>stereotypes about ‘foreignness’ continue to shape the experience of <br/>modern travel. The Global Politics of Contemporary Travel Writing is <br/>concerned with the way contemporary travelogues engage with, and try <br/>to resolve, familiar struggles in global politics such as the protection of <br/>human rights, the promotion of democracy, the management of <br/>equality within multiculturalism and the reduction of inequality. This is <br/>a thoroughly interdisciplinary book that draws from international <br/>relations, literary theory, political theory, geography, anthropology and <br/>history.

METAMORPHOSE European Doctoral Programs on Metamaterials - State-of-the-art

A new European Doctoral Program on Metamaterials has been initiated by the European Union (EU) Network of Excellence METAMORPHOSE. So far, twenty European academic institutions have established a consortium that operates a geographically distributed doctoral school in the emerging and multidisciplinary field of metamaterials.

Nationalist Multiculturalism in Late Imperial Austria as a Critique of Contemporary Liberalism: The Case of Bauer and Renner,

This article evaluates Bauer's theory of the nation and the debateon national-cultural autonomy in late imperial Austria. It finds important similarities with contemporary liberal debates on multiculturalism and the rights of ethnic and national minorities. It argues that the debate on national-cultural autonomy went in some respects beyond the contemporary debate on multiculturalism. National-cultural autonomy rejects the idea of the nation-state and proposes instead a multi-nation-state that recognises differential rights for ethnic and national minorities. It seeks to break the limitations of liberal democracy and the territorial principle of the nation-state by organising national communities as deterritorialised national corporations, and multination-states as territorialised non-national identities.
