An experimental study on strengthening prestressed concrete (PC) hollow-core slabs was conducted. Nine PC hollow-core slabs were tested, including three unstrengthened reference slabs and six slabs strengthened with bamboo plates. The results show that compared with unreinforced slabs, the cracking loads of PC hollow-core slabs strengthened with bamboo plates increase by 5% to 96% (with an average of 41%), the loads at allowable deflection increase by 8% to 76% (with an average of 35%), and the ultimate loads increase by 83% to 184% (with an average of 123%), respectively. All the degrees of improvement in the crack load, allowable load and ultimate load increase with the increase in the thickness and width of the bamboo plates. With the increase in the loads, the strain distribution along the height of the strengthened slabs at the mid-span basically remains a plan-assumption. With the increase in the thickness and width of the bamboo plates, both the bamboo tensile strain on the tensile face and the concrete compressive strain on the compression face of the strengthened slabs decrease under the same load level.

In this work NiO/3mol% Y2O3-ZrO2 (3YSZ) and NiO/8mol% Y2O3-ZrO2 (8YSZ) hollow fibers were prepared by phase-inversion. The effect of different kinds of YSZ (3YSZ and 8YSZ) on the porosity, electrical conductivity, shrinkage and flexural strength of the hollow fibers were systematically evaluated. When compared with Ni-8YSZ the porosity and shrinkage of Ni-3YSZ hollow fibers increases while the electrical conductivity decreases, while at the same time also exhibiting enhanced flexural strength. Single cells with Ni-3YSZ and Ni-8YSZ hollow fibers as the supported anode were successfully fabricated showing maximum power densities of 0.53 and 0.67Wcm-2 at 800°C, respectively. Furthermore, in order to improve the cell performance, a Ni-8YSZ anode functional layer was added between the electrolyte and Ni-YSZ hollow fiber. Here enhanced peak power densities of 0.79 and 0.73Wcm-2 were achieved at 800°C for single cells with Ni-3YSZ and Ni-8YSZ hollow fibers, respectively.

The basic concepts and phenomenology of wave mixing and harmonic generation are reviewed in context of the recent advances in the enhanced nonlinear activity in metamaterials and photonic crystals. The effects of dispersion, field confinement and phase synchronism are illustrated by the examples of the on-purpose designed artificial nonlinear structures. (c) 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. In this work we present core–shell nanowire arrays of gold coated with a nanometric layer of cobalt. Despite the extremely small Co volume, these core–shell nanowires display large magneto-optical activity and plasmonic resonance determined by the geometry of the structure. Therefore, we are able to tune both the plasmonic and magneto-optical response in the visible range. Through optical and ellipsometric measurements in transmission, and applying a magnetic field to the sample, it is possible to modulate the value of the phase angle (Del {Δ}) between the S and P polarised components. It was found that the core–shell sample produced an order of magnitude larger variation in Del with changing magnetic field direction, compared with hollow cobalt tubes. The enhancement of magneto optical properties through the plasmonic nature of the gold core is complemented with the ability to induce magnetic influence over optical properties via an externally applied field. Moreover, we demonstrate for the first time the ability to use the remanent magnetisation of the Co, in conjunction with the optical properties defined by the Au, to observe remanent optical states in this uniquely designed structure. This new class of magnetoplasmonic metamaterial has great potential in a wide range of applications, from bio-sensing to data storage due to the tuneable nature of multiple resonance modes and dual functionality.
