Purpose The aim of this work was to examine, for amorphous solid dispersions, how the thermal analysis method selected impacts on the construction of thermodynamic phase diagrams, and to assess the predictive value of such phase diagrams in the selection of optimal, physically stable API-polymer compositions. Methods Thermodynamic phase diagrams for two API/polymer systems (naproxen/HPMC AS LF and naproxen/Kollidon 17 PF) were constructed from data collected using two different thermal analysis methods. The “dynamic” method involved heating the physical mixture at a rate of 1 &[deg]C/minute. In the "static" approach, samples were held at a temperature above the polymer Tg for prolonged periods, prior to scanning at 10 &[deg]C/minute. Subsequent to construction of phase diagrams, solid dispersions consisting of API-polymer compositions representative of different zones in the phase diagrams were spray dried and characterised using DSC, pXRD, TGA, FTIR, DVS and SEM. The stability of these systems was investigated under the following conditions: 25 &[deg]C, desiccated; 25 &[deg]C, 60 % RH; 40 &[deg]C, desiccated; 40 &[deg]C, 60 % RH. Results Endset depression occurred with increasing polymer volume fraction (Figure 1a). In conjunction with this data, Flory-Huggins and Gordon-Taylor theory were applied to construct thermodynamic phase diagrams (Figure 1b). The Flory-Huggins interaction parameter (&[chi]) for naproxen and HPMC AS LF was + 0.80 and + 0.72, for the dynamic and static methods respectively. For naproxen and Kollidon 17 PF, the dynamic data resulted in an interaction parameter of - 1.1 and the isothermal data produced a value of - 2.2. For both systems, the API appeared to be less soluble in the polymer when the dynamic approach was used. Stability studies of spray dried solid dispersions could be used as a means of validating the thermodynamic phase diagrams. Conclusion The thermal analysis method used to collate data has a deterministic effect on the phase diagram produced. This effect should be considered when constructing thermodynamic phase diagrams, as they can be a useful tool in predicting the stability of amorphous solid dispersions.

Information retrieval in the age of Internet search engines has become part of ordinary discourse and everyday practice: "Google" is a verb in common usage. Thus far, more attention has been given to practical understanding of information retrieval than to a full theoretical account. In Human Information Retrieval, Julian Warner offers a comprehensive overview of information retrieval, synthesizing theories from different disciplines (information and computer science, librarianship and indexing, and information society discourse) and incorporating such disparate systems as WorldCat and Google into a single, robust theoretical framework. There is a need for such a theoretical treatment, he argues, one that reveals the structure and underlying patterns of this complex field while remaining congruent with everyday practice. Warner presents a labor theoretic approach to information retrieval, building on his previously formulated distinction between semantic and syntactic mental labor, arguing that the description and search labor of information retrieval can be understood as both semantic and syntactic in character. Warner's information science approach is rooted in the humanities and the social sciences but informed by an understanding of information technology and information theory. The chapters offer a progressive exposition of the topic, with illustrative examples to explain the concepts presented. Neither narrowly practical nor largely speculative, Human Information Retrieval meets the contemporary need for a broader treatment of information and information systems.

Background: Children born by Caesarean section have modified intestinal bacterial colonization and consequently may have an increased risk of developing asthma under the hygiene hypothesis. The results of previous studies that have investigated the association between Caesarean section and asthma have been conflicting.

Objective: To review published literature and perform a meta-analysis summarizing the evidence in support of an association between children born by Caesarean section and asthma.

Methods: MEDLINE, Web Science, Google Scholar and PubMed were searched to identify relevant studies. Odds ratio (OR) and 95% confidence interval (CI) were calculated for each study from the reported prevalence of asthma in children born by Caesarean section and in control children. Meta-analysis was then used to derive a combined OR and test for heterogeneity in the findings between studies.

Results: Twenty-three studies were identified. The overall meta-analysis revealed an increase in the risk of asthma in children delivered by Caesarean section (OR=1.22, 95% CI 1.14, 1.29). However, in this analysis, there was evidence of heterogeneity (I2=46%) that was statistically significant (P<0.001). Restricting the analysis to childhood studies, this heterogeneity was markedly decreased (I2=32%) and no longer attained statistical significance (P=0.08). In these studies, there was also evidence of an increase (P<0.001) in the risk of asthma after Caesarean section (OR=1.20, 95% CI 1.14, 12.6).

Conclusion: In this meta-analysis, we found a 20% increase in the subsequent risk of asthma in children who had been delivered by Caesarean section.

The aim of this highly novel study was to use hot-melt extrusion technology as an alternative process to enteric coating. In so doing, oral dosage forms displaying enteric properties may be produced in a continuous, rapid process, providing significant advantages over traditional pharmaceutical coating technology. Eudragit (R) L100-55, an enteric polymer, was pre-plasticized with triethyl citrate (TEC) and citric acid and subsequently dry-mixed with 5-aminosalicylic acid, a model active pharmaceutical ingredient (API), and an optional gelling agent (PVP (R) K30 or Carbopol (R) 971P). Powder blends were hot-melt extruded as cylinders, cut into tablets and characterised using powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and dissolution testing conducted in both pH 1.2 and pH 6.8 buffers. Increasing the concentration of TEC significantly lowered the glass transition temperature (T,) of Eudragit (R) L100-55 and reduced temperatures necessary for extrusion as well as the die pressure. Moreover, citric acid (17% w/w) was shown to act as a solid-state plasticizer. HME tablets showed excellent gastro-resistance, whereas milled extrudates compressed into tablets released more than 10% w/w of the API in acidic media. Drug release from HME tablets was dependent upon the concentration of TEC, the presence of citric acid, PVP K30, and Carbopol (R) 971P in the matrix, and pH of the dissolution media. The inclusion of an optional gelling agent significantly reduced the erosion of the matrix and drug release rate at pH 6.8; however, the enteric properties of the matrix were lost due to the formation of channels within the tablet. Consequently this work is both timely and highly innovative and identifies for the first time a method of producing an enteric matrix tablet using a continuous hot-melt extrusion process.

In common with other terrestrial flatworms, the mucus produced by Artioposthia triangulata may have a number of functions, including protection from environmental factors and from predators, and it provides the flatworm with lubrication for movement and adhesion. No previous work has been carried out on the characterization of proteins present in the mucus of A. triangulata and this study was a preliminary investigation of the mucus. Mucus was analysed by SDS-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis, biotinylated peptide affinity probes and the API ZYM enzyme detection kit. Results have revealed the presence of at least 40 polypeptides in the mucus and further studies with biotinylated probes have characterised one of them as a chymotrypsin-like serine protease. In this paper, we present a methodology for implementing a complete Digital Signal Processing (DSP) system onto a heterogeneous network including Field Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs) automatically. The methodology aims to allow design refinement and real time verification at the system level. The DSP application is constructed in the form of a Data Flow Graph (DFG) which provides an entry point to the methodology. The netlist for parts that are mapped onto the FPGA(s) together with the corresponding software and hardware Application Protocol Interface (API) are also generated. Using a set of case studies, we demonstrate that the design and development time can be significantly reduced using the methodology developed.

A study was carried out to compare the API20C technology with polymerase chain reaction amplification and direct sequencing of the short internal transcribed spacer region 2 (ITS2) for the identification of 58 isolates of invasive candida species obtained from patients with bloodstream infections over the seven year period 1994 to 2000. Overall, there was only one disagreement between the phenotypic and genotypic identification, where the API scheme identified the isolate as C albicans but the molecular method identified it as C dubliniensis. This study demonstrated that the API20C method is useful in the identification of Candida spp isolated from blood culture and that molecular methods do not enhance identifications made using the API20C scheme. However, for correct reporting of C dubliniensis, an emerging bloodborne pathogen, it is recommended that all isolates identified as C albicans by the API20C scheme are further examined phenotypically and/or genotypically.

The haemagglutinating and enzymic activities of the obligately anaerobic pathogenic bacterium Bacteroides fragilis were examined. Outer membrane vesicles are released from the surface of B. fragilis. They can be detected by electron microscopy in ultrathin sections and bacterial suspensions after negative staining. Electron microscopy and immunogold labelling with a MAb specific for surface polysaccharide of B. fragilis confirmed that the vesicles carried outer membrane associated epitopes. The haemagglutinating activity of whole cells from populations of B. fragilis strains NCTC9343, BE3 and LS66 enriched by Percoll density gradient centrifugation for a large capsule (LC), electron dense layer (EDL); non-capsulate by light microscopy) and outer membrane vesicles (OMV) which had been purified by centrifugation from EDL-enriched populations were compared using human and horse erythrocytes. The enzymic activity of OMV, LC- and EDL-enriched populations, as detected by the API ZYM kit, was compared for strains NCTC 9343 and BE3. Purified OMV from the strains examined exhibited both haemagglutinating and enzymatic activity. Haemagglutination by the EDL-enriched population was sensitive to treatment with sodium periodate. The LC-enriched population haemagglutinated only after ultrasonic removal of the capsule. This indicates that the LC masks a haemagglutinin. The results suggest a potential role for OMV in the virulence of B. fragilis.

Context: The development of a consolidated knowledge base for social work requires rigorous approaches to identifying relevant research. Method: The quality of 10 databases and a web search engine were appraised by systematically searching for research articles on resilience and burnout in child protection social workers. Results: Applied Social Sciences Index and Abstracts, Social Services Abstracts and Social Sciences Citation Index (SSCI) had greatest sensitivity, each retrieving more than double than any other database. PsycINFO and Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health (CINAHL) had highest precision. Google Scholar had modest sensitivity and good precision in relation to the first 100 items. SSCI, Google Scholar, Medline, and CINAHL retrieved the highest number of hits not retrieved by any other database. Conclusion: A range of databases is required for even modestly comprehensive searching. Advanced database searching methods are being developed but the profession requires greater standardization of terminology to assist in information retrieval.

Most parallel computing applications in highperformance computing use the Message Passing Interface (MPI) API. Given the fundamental importance of parallel computing to science and engineering research, application correctness is paramount. MPI was originally developed around 1993 by the MPI Forum, a group of vendors, parallel programming researchers, and computational scientists. However, the document defining the standard is not issued by an official standards organization but has become a de facto standard © 2011 ACM.

White rot fungi were collected from Chirinda and Chimanimani hardwood forests in Zimbabwe and studied with respect to growth temperature optima and dye decolorization. Temperature optima were found to vary (between 25-37 degreesC) amongst the isolates. The isolates were screened for their ability to degrade the polymeric dyes; blue dextran and Poly R478 and the triphenylmethane dyes; cresol red, crystal violet and bromophenol blue. Semi-quantitative determination of the hydrolytic enzyme activities possessed by the white rot fungi was determined using the API ZYM system. Lignin peroxidase (LiP), manganese peroxidase (MnP) and laccase activities in the fungi were also determined. No LiP was detected in any of the isolates but all isolates showed manganese peroxidase and laccase activities. Time related decolorization studies and optimum pH determinations for Poly R478 degradation by the isolates were carried out in liquid cultures. The most significant rates of Poly R478 decolorization in liquid cultures were found with the following isolates: Trametes cingulata, Trametes versicolor, Trametes pocas, DSPM95 (a species to be identified), Datronia concentrica and Pyenoporus sanguineus. Within the last few years the field personalized medicine entered the stage. Accompanied with great hopes and expectations it is believed that this field may have the potential to revolutionize medical and clinical care by utilizing genomics information about the individual patients themselves. In this paper, we reconstruct the early footprints of personalized medicine as reflected by information retrieved from PubMed and Google Scholar. That means we are providing a data-driven perspective of this field to estimate its current status and potential problems.
