Copper-manganese spinel containing anodes were synthesized by a facile sol-gel method and evaluated in lithium-ion battery applications for the first time. The synergistic effects between copper-manganese and the aqueous binder (sodium carboxymethyl cellulose) provided a high specific capacity and excellent cycling performance. It was found that the specific capacity of the copper-manganese spinel remained at 608 mAh g−1 after 100 cycles at a current density of 200 mA g−1. Furthermore, a relatively high reversible capacity of 278 mAh g−1 could be obtained at a current density of 2000 mA g−1, indicating a good rate capability. These studies suggest that copper-manganese spinel is a promising material for lithium-ion battery applications due to a combination of good electrochemical performance and low cost.

The phase instability of bismuth perovskite (BiMO3), where M is a ferromagnetic cation, is exploited to create self-assembled magnetic oxide nanocrystal arrays on oxide supports. Conditions during pulsed laser deposition are tuned so as to induce complete breakdown of the perovskite precursor into bismuth oxide (Bi2 O3 ) and metal oxide (M-Ox ) pockets. Subsequent cooling in vacuum volatizes the Bi2 O3 leaving behind an array of monodisperse nanocrystals. In situ reflective high energy electron diffraction beam is exploited to monitor the synthesis in real-time. Analysis of the patterns confi rms the phase separation and volatization process. Successful synthesis of M-Ox, where M = Mn, Fe, Co, and Cr, is shown using this template-free facile approach. Detailed magnetic characterization of nanocrystals is carried out to reveal the functionalities such as magnetic anisotropy as well as larger than bulk moments, as expected in these oxide nanostructures.

The general properties of a frequency selective surface loaded with negative impedance converter (NIC)-based active loads are discussed from a theoretical perspective. The stability problem associated with NIC circuits embedded in artificial magnetic conductor (AMC) and AMC absorber applications is studied using pole-zero analysis. The requirements and constraints for achieving stable operation with enhanced bandwidth using negative capacitance as realized by a floating NIC network are derived. Furthermore, it is shown that it is nearly impossible to simultaneously implement a negative capacitor and a negative inductor to such structures. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. We propose a radiation source based on a magnetic mirror cavity. Relativistic electrons are simulated entering the cavity and their trajectories and resulting emission spectra are calculated. The uniformity of the particle orbits is found to result in a frequency comb in terahertz range, the precise energies of which are tunable by varying the electron's gamma-factor. For very high energy particles, radiation friction causes the spectral harmonics to broaden and we suggest this as a possible way to verify competing classical equations of motion.

Aims: In this paper we aim to investigate the evolution of plasmaproperties and Stokes parameters in photospheric magnetic bright pointsusing 3D magneto-hydrodynamical simulations and radiative diagnostics ofsolar granulation.

Methods: Simulated time-dependent radiationparameters and plasma properties were investigated throughout theevolution of a bright point. Synthetic Stokes profiles for the FeI630.25 nm line were calculated, which also allowed the evolution of theStokes-I line strength and Stokes-V area and amplitude asymmetries to beinvestigated.

Results: Our results are consistent withtheoretical predictions and published observations describing convectivecollapse, and confirm this as the bright point formation process.Through degradation of the simulated data to match the spatialresolution of SOT, we show that high spatial resolution is crucial forthe detection of changing spectro-polarimetric signatures throughout amagnetic bright point's lifetime. We also show that the signaturedownflow associated with the convective collapse process tends towardszero as the radiation intensity in the bright point peaks, because ofthe magnetic forces present restricting the flow of material in the fluxtube.

Combined conduction–convection–radiation heat transfer is investigated numerically in a micro-channel filled with a saturated cellular porous medium, with the channel walls held at a constant heat flux. Invoking the velocity slip and temperature jump, the thermal behaviour of the porous–fluid system are studied by considering hydrodynamically fully developed flow and applying the Darcy–Brinkman flow model. One energy equation model based on the local thermal equilibrium condition is adopted to evaluate the temperature field within the porous medium. Combined conduction and radiation heat transfer is treated as an effective conduction process with a temperature-dependent effective thermal conductivity. Results are reported in terms of the average Nusselt number and dimensionless temperature distribution, as a function of velocity slip coefficient, temperature jump coefficient, porous medium shape parameter and radiation parameters. Results show that increasing the radiation parameter (Tr)(Tr) and the temperature jump coefficient flattens the dimensionless temperature profile. The Nusselt numbers are more sensitive to the variation in the temperature jump coefficient rather than to the velocity slip coefficient. Such that for high porous medium shape parameter, the Nusselt number is found to be independent of velocity slip. Furthermore, it is found that as the temperature jump coefficient increases, the Nusselt number decrease. In addition, for high temperature jump coefficients, the Nusselt number is found to be insensitive to the radiation parameters and porous medium shape parameter. It is also concluded that compared with the conventional macro-channels, wherein using a porous material enhances the rate of heat transfer (up to about 40 % compared to the clear channel), insertion of a porous material inside a micro-channel in slip regime does not effectively enhance the rate of heat transfer that is about 2 %.

Considerable controversy still exists as to whether electric and magnetic fields (MF) at extremely low frequencies are genotoxic to humans. The aim of this study was to test the ability of alternating magnetic fields to induce DNA and chromosomal damage in primary human fibroblasts. Single- and double-strand breaks were quantified using the alkaline comet assay and the gammaH2AX-foci assay, respectively. Chromosomal damage was assayed for unstable aberrations, sister chromatid exchange and micronuclei. Cells were exposed to switching fields - 5min on, 10min off - for 15h over the range 50-1000microT. Exposure to ionizing radiation was used as a positive-effect calibration. In this study two separate MF exposure systems were used. One was based on a custom-built solenoid coil system and the other on a commercial system almost identical to that used in previous studies by the EU REFLEX programme. With neither system could DNA damage or chromosomal damage be detected as a result of exposure of fibroblasts to switching MF. The sensitive gammaH2AX assay could also not detect significant DNA damage in the MF-exposed fibroblasts, although the minimum threshold for this assay was equivalent to an X-ray dose of 0.025Gy. Therefore, with comparable MF parameters employed, this study could not confirm previous studies reporting significant effects for both the alkaline and neutral comet assays and chromosomal aberration induction.

A physically open, but electrically shielded, microwave open oven can be produced by virtue of the evanescent fields in a waveguide below cutoff. The below cutoff heating chamber is fed by a transverse magnetic resonance established in a dielectric-filled section of the waveguide exploiting continuity of normal electric flux. In order to optimize the fields and the performance of the oven, a thin layer of a dielectric material with higher permittivity is inserted at the interface. Analysis and synthesis of an optimized open oven predicts field enhancement in the heating chamber up to 9.4 dB. Results from experimental testing on two fabricated prototypes are in agreement with the simulated predictions, and demonstrate an up to tenfold improvement in the heating performance. The open-ended oven allows for simultaneous precision alignment, testing, and efficient curing of microelectronic devices, significantly increasing productivity gains.

A simple method for the selection of the appropriate choice of surface-mounted loading resistor required for a thin radar absorber based on a high-impedance surface (HIS) principle is demonstrated. The absorber consists of a HIS, (artificial magnetic ground plane), thickness 0.03 lambda(0) surface-loaded resistive-elements interconnecting a textured surface of square patches. The properties of absorber are characterized under normal incident using a parallel plate waveguide measurement technique over the operating frequency range of 2.6-3.95 GHz. We show that for this arrangement return loss and bandwidth are insensitive to +/- 2% tolerance variations in surface resistor values about the value predicted using the method elaborated in this letter, and that better than -28 dB at 3.125 GHz reflection loss can be obtained with an effective working bandwidth of up to 11% at -10 dB reflection loss. We know considerably more about what makes cells and tissues resistant or sensitive to radiation than we did 20 years ago. Novel techniques in molecular biology have made a major contribution to our understanding at the level of signalling pathways. Before the “New Biology” era, radioresponsiveness was defined in terms of physiological parameters designated as the five Rs. These are: repair, repopulation, reassortment, reoxygenation and radiosensitivity. Of these, only the role of hypoxia proved to be a robust predictive and prognostic marker, but radiotherapy regimens were nonetheless modified in terms of dose per fraction, fraction size and overall time, in ways that persist in clinical practice today. The first molecular techniques were applied to radiobiology about two decades ago and soon revealed the existence of genes/proteins that respond to and influence the cellular outcome of irradiation. The subsequent development of screening techniques using microarray technology has since revealed that a very large number of genes fall into this category. We can now obtain an adequately robust molecular signature, predicting for a radioresponsive phenotype using gene expression and proteomic approaches. In parallel with these developments, functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) and positron emission tomography (PET) can now detect specific biological molecules such as haemoglobin and glucose, so revealing a 3D map of tumour blood flow and metabolism. The key to personalised radiotherapy will be to extend this capability to the proteins of the molecular signature that determine radiosensitivity.

Guided transport of a relativistic electron beam in solid is achieved experimentally by exploiting the strong magnetic fields created at the interface of two metals of different electrical resistivities. This is of substantial relevance to the Fast Ignitor approach to fusion energy production [M. Tabak et al., Phys. Plasmas 12, 057305 (2005)], since it allows the electron deposition to be spatially tailored-thus adding substantial design flexibility and preventing inefficiencies due to electron beam spreading. In the experiment, optical transition radiation and thermal emission from the target rear surface provide a clear signature of the electron confinement within a high resistivity tin layer sandwiched transversely between two low resistivity aluminum slabs. The experimental data are found to agree well with numerical simulations.
