A broad survey of harmonic dynamics in AB(2) clusters with up to N = 3000 atoms is performed using a simple rigid ion model, with ionic radii selected to give rutile as the ground state structure for the corresponding extended crystal. The vibrational density of states is already close to its bulk counterpart for N similar to 500, with characteristic differences due to surfaces, edges and vertices. Two methods are proposed and tested to map the cluster vibrational states onto the rutile crystal phonons. The net distinction between infrared (IR) active and Raman active modes that exists for bulk rutile becomes more and more blurred as the cluster size is reduced. It is found that, in general, the higher the IR activity of the mode, the more this is affected by the system size. IR active modes are found to spread over a wide frequency range for the finite clusters. Simple models based on either a crude confinement constraint or surface pressure arguments fail to reproduce the results of the calculations. The effects of the stoichiometry and dielectric properties of the surrounding medium on the vibrational properties of the clusters are also investigated.

A force field model of phosphorus has been developed based on density functional (DF) computations and experimental results, covering low energy forms of local tetrahedral symmetry and more compact (simple cubic) structures that arise with increasing pressure. Rules tailored to DF data for the addition, deletion, and exchange of covalent bonds allow the system to adapt the bonding configuration to the thermodynamic state. Monte Carlo simulations in the N-P-T ensemble show that the molecular (P-4) liquid phase, stable at low pressure P and relatively low temperature T, transforms to a polymeric (gel) state on increasing either P or T. These phase changes are observed in recent experiments at similar thermodynamic conditions, as shown by the close agreement of computed and measured structure factors in the molecular and polymer phases. The polymeric phase obtained by increasing pressure has a dominant simple cubic character, while the polymer obtained by raising T at moderate pressure is tetrahedral. Comparison with DF results suggests that the latter is a semiconductor, while the cubic form is metallic. The simulations show that the T-induced polymerization is due to the entropy of the configuration of covalent bonds, as in the polymerization transition in sulfur. The transition observed with increasing P is the continuation at high T of the black P to arsenic (A17) structure observed in the solid state, and also corresponds to a semiconductor to metal transition. Density functional calculations have been performed for ring isomers of sulfur with up to 18 atoms, and for chains with up to ten atoms. There are many isomers of both types, and the calculations predict the existence of new forms. Larger rings and chains are very flexible, with numerous local energy minima. Apart from a small, but consistent overestimate in the bond lengths, the results reproduce experimental structures where known. Calculations are also performed on the energy surfaces of S8 rings, on the interaction between a pair of such rings, and the reaction between one S8 ring and the triplet diradical S8 chain. The results for potential energies, vibrational frequencies, and reaction mechanisms in sulfur rings and chains provide essential ingredients for Monte Carlo simulations of the liquid–liquid phase transition. The results of these simulations will be presented in Part II.

Structural and magnetic properties of thin Mn films on the Fe(001) surface have been investigated by a combination of photoelectron spectroscopy and computer simulation in the temperature range 300 Kless than or equal toTless than or equal to750 K. Room-temperature as deposited Mn overlayers are found to be ferromagnetic up to 2.5-monolayer (ML) coverage, with a magnetic moment parallel to that of the iron substrate. The Mn atomic moment decreases with increasing coverage, and thicker samples (4-ML and 4.5-ML coverage) are antiferromagnetic. Photoemission measurements performed while the system temperature is rising at constant rate (dT/dtsimilar to0.5 K/s) detect the first signs of Mn-Fe interdiffusion at T=450 K, and reveal a broad temperature range (610 Kless than or equal toTless than or equal to680 K) in which the interface appears to be stable. Interdiffusion resumes at Tgreater than or equal to680 K. Molecular dynamics and Monte Carlo simulations allow us to attribute the stability plateau at 610 Kless than or equal toTless than or equal to680 K to the formation of a single-layer MnFe surface alloy with a 2x2 unit cell and a checkerboard distribution of Mn and Fe atoms. X-ray-absorption spectroscopy and analysis of the dichroic signal show that the alloy has a ferromagnetic spin structure, collinear with that of the substrate. The magnetic moments of Mn and Fe atoms in the alloy are estimated to be 0.8mu(B) and 1.1mu(B), respectively.

The equilibrium polymerization of sulfur is investigated by Monte Carlo simulations. The potential energy model is based on density functional results for the cohesive energy, structural, and vibrational properties as well as reactivity of sulfur rings and chains [Part I, J. Chem. Phys. 118, 9257 (2003)]. Liquid samples of 2048 atoms are simulated at temperatures 450less than or equal toTless than or equal to850 K and P=0 starting from monodisperse S-8 molecular compositions. Thermally activated bond breaking processes lead to an equilibrium population of unsaturated atoms that can change the local pattern of covalent bonds and allow the system to approach equilibrium. The concentration of unsaturated atoms and the kinetics of bond interchanges is determined by the energy DeltaE(b) required to break a covalent bond. Equilibrium with respect to the bond distribution is achieved for 15less than or equal toDeltaE(b)less than or equal to21 kcal/mol over a wide temperature range (Tgreater than or equal to450 K), within which polymerization occurs readily, with entropy from the bond distribution overcompensating the increase in enthalpy. There is a maximum in the polymerized fraction at temperature T-max that depends on DeltaE(b). This fraction decreases at higher temperature because broken bonds and short chains proliferate and, for Tless than or equal toT(max), because entropy is less important than enthalpy. The molecular size distribution is described well by a Zimm-Schulz function, plus an isolated peak for S-8. Large molecules are almost exclusively open chains. Rings tend to have fewer than 24 atoms, and only S-8 is present in significant concentrations at all T. The T dependence of the density and the dependence of polymerization fraction and degree on DeltaE(b) give estimates of the polymerization temperature T-f=450+/-20 K. Ring-opening polymerization of cyclic polycarbonate oligomers, where monofunctional active sites act on difunctional monomers to produce an equilibrium distribution of rings and chains, leads to a "living polymer." Monte Carlo simulations [two-dimensional (2D) and three-dimensional (3D)] of the effects of single [J. Chem. Phys. 115, 3895 (2001)] and multiple active sites [J. Chem. Phys. 116, 7724 (2002)] are extended here to trifunctional active sites that lead to branching. Low concentrations of trifunctional particles c(3) reduce the degree of polymerization significantly in 2D, and higher concentrations (up to 32%) lead to further large changes in the phase diagram. Gel formation is observed at high total density and sizable c(3) as a continuous transition similar to percolation. Polymer and gel are much more stable in 3D than in 2D, and both the total density and the value of c(3) required to produce high molecular weight aggregates are reduced significantly. The degree of polymerization in high-density 3D systems is increased by the addition of trifunctional monomers and reduced slightly at low densities and low c(3). The presence of branching makes equilibrium states more sensitive (in 2D and 3D) to changes in temperature T. The stabilities of polymer and gel are enhanced by increasing T, and-for sufficiently high values of c(3)-there is a reversible polymer-gel transformation at a density-dependent floor temperature. Density functional calculations of the structure, potential energy surface and reactivity for organic systems closely related to bisphenol-A-polycarbonate (BPA-PC) provide the basis for a model describing the ring-opening polymerization of its cyclic oligomers by nucleophilic molecules. Monte Carlo simulations using this model show a strong tendency to polymerize that is increased by increasing density and temperature, and is greater in 3D than in 2D. Entropy in the distribution of inter-particle bonds is the driving force for chain formation. (C) 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

Pressure-induced structural modifications in scolecite were studied by means of in situ synchrotron X-ray powder diffraction and density functional computations. The experimental cell parameters were refined up to 8.5 GPa. Discontinuities in the slope of the unit-cell parameters vs. pressure dependence were observed; as a consequence, an increase in the slope of the linear pressure-volume dependence is observed at about 6 GPa, suggesting an enhanced compressibility at higher pressures. Weakening and broadening of the diffraction peaks reveals increasing structural disorder with pressure, preventing refinement of the lattice parameters above 8.5 GPa. Diffraction patterns collected during decompression show that the disorder is irreversible. Atomic coordinates within unit cells of different dimensions were determined by means of Car-Parrinello simulations. The discontinuous rise in compressibility at about 6 GPa is reproduced by the computation, allowing us to attribute it to re-organization of the hydrogen bonding network, with the formation of water dimers. Moreover we found that, with increasing pressure, the tetrahedral chains parallel to c rotate along their elongation axis and display an increasing twisting along a direction perpendicular to c. At the same time, we observed the compression of the channels. We discuss the modification of the Ca polyhedra under pressure, and the increase in coordination number (from 4 to 5) of one of the two Al atoms, resulting from the approach of a water molecule. We speculate that this last transformation triggers the irreversible disordering of the system.
