In this paper, the leaky-mode theory is applied to take into account for the dielectric losses in millimetre waveband inhomogeneous leaky-wave antennas. A practical dielectric-filled cosine-tapered periodic leaky-wave antenna working in the 45GHz band is studied, showing how the desired sidelobes level and directivity are spoilt due to the effect of the losses. An iterative procedure is used to correct the negative effects of the losses in the radiation patterns of the leaky-wave structure. It is also shown the practical limits of the proposed correction approach. The leaky-mode theory is applied for the first time to compensate the losses in a practical leaky-wave antenna in hybrid waveguide printed circuit technology. This leaky-mode theory is validated with full-wave three-dimensional finite element method simulations of the designed antenna.

Introduction: The quadrifilar helix antenna (QHA) is used widely for terrestrial [1] and space communication systems [2], where it is necessary to generate a circularly polarised cardioid-shaped radiation pattern with a high front-to-back ratio and low cross-polarisation. The radiating structure comprises four helical conductors which are excited in phase quadrature at the feed point, which is usually located at the centre of the top radials. The physical size of the quadrifilar antenna can be reduced by dielectric loading [3] or by meandering the printed linear elements [4]. However, in the former arrangement dielectric absorption reduces the radiation efficiency of the antenna, and the latter technique is not suitable for constructing free standing wire structures, which are normally used for spacecraft payloads in the VHF and UHF bands [2]. This Letter shows that a significant reduction in the axial length of a 1/2 turn half-wavelength QHA can be achieved by modifying the geometry of the helices in the region around the midpoint where a current null exists. Simulated and experimental results at L band are used to show that a size reduction of up to 15% is possible without significantly degrading the pattern shape and the bandwidth.

Experimental results are presented to show how a planar circuit, printed on a laterally shielded dielectric waveguide, can induce and control the radiation from a leaky-mode. By studying the leaky-mode complex propagation constant, a desired radiation pattern can be synthesized, controlling the main radiation characteristics (pointing direction, beamwidth, sidelobes level) for a given frequency, This technique leads to very flexible and original leaky-wave antenna designs. The experiments show to be in very good agreement with the leaky-mode theory.

In this communication we present a novel polarization-agile microstrip antenna design. To dynamically change the polarization state, the radiating patch is fed by a tunable quasi-lumped coupler. The whole structure can be dynamically altered to radiate electromagnetic waves with vertical linear, horizontal linear, right-handed circular or left-handed circular polarization simply by changing the operating mode of the quasi-lumped coupler. Due to its topology the coupler is simply reconfigured by switching the bias of two varactor diodes via a very simple DC bias circuitry: no additional capacitors or inductors are required. A prototype is fabricated with a 0.762-mm-thick upper layer substrate for the radiating element and a 0.130-mm-thick layer substrate for the coupler circuit, both with the same dielectric material relative permittivity of 2.22. The simulated and measured scattering parameters, the axial ratio in circular radiation-mode and the cross-polarization level in linear mode, the gain and the radiation patterns are presented. The agile polarization capabilities of this new antenna, as demonstrated in this communication, underscore its suitability for modern wireless communications in a multi-path propagation environment.

Presented is a design methodology which permits the application of distributed coupled resonator bandpass filter principles to form wideband small-aperture evanescent-mode waveguide antenna designs. This approach permits matching of the complex antenna aperture admittance of an evanescent-mode open-ended waveguide to a real impedance generator, and thereby to a coaxial feed probe. A simulated reflection coefficient of < - 10 dB was obtained over a bandwidth of 20%, from 2.0-2.45 GHz, in a 2.58 GHz cutoff waveguide. Dielectric-filled propagating waveguide and air-filled evanescent-mode waveguide sections are used to form the resonators/coupling elements of the antenna's coupled resonator matching sections. Simulated realised gain variation from 3.4-5.0 dBi is observed across the bandwidth. The antenna's maximum aperture dimension is < 0.47 wavelength at the upper operating frequency and so it is suitable for use in a wide angle scanning phased array.

We present a novel antenna matching technique that uses the Imaginary Smith Chart to permit wideband matching of an evanescent open-ended waveguide antenna using a dielectric sheet air-spaced from the aperture. The fabricated antenna design is demonstrated to have a measured bandwidth of 24%, from 2.13–2.7 GHz, for reflection coefficient $qquad{<} -!!10~{rm dB}$ , with 2.725 GHz waveguide cutoff. The antenna's maximum aperture dimension is ${< 0.5}lambda_{0}$ at the upper frequency in the bandwidth and so it is suitable for use in a wide angle scanning phased array

An electronically reconfigurable Rotman lens is described which generates multiple beams that can be switched from monopulse sum to difference radiation patterns when used in conjunction with a six element Vivaldi antenna array. This is achieved by exploiting the voltage-dependent dielectric anisotropy property of nematic state liquid crystals to provide switched 0 degrees and 180 degrees phase shifts in the array feed lines. The viability of the concept is demonstrated by designing an antenna which exhibits dynamically reconfigurable monopulse radiation patterns over the frequency band 6-10 GHz. This paper describes the performance characteristics and experimental validation of a compact conical horn antenna with a dielectric cylinder spiral phase plate attached at its aperture. This performs the function of a spatial phase imprinting device creating a helical wave-front which results in a null in the far field radiation pattern of the antenna assembly.

This paper discusses modelling multilayer dielectric stacks for use as substrate support for frequency selective surface. A method of a fast simulation of multilayer dielectric stack as a complementary tool for FSS design is proposed. Using the method analysis of effect of different parts of the multilayer stack has been performed. The tool has also been used for extraction of material parameters from the measured results. Measured transmission and reflection of a sample manufactured material stack show good agreement with the simulated results obtained for extracted material parameters.

Plane wave scattering from a flat surface consisting of two periodic arrays of ring elements printed on a grounded dielectric sheet is investigated. It is shown that the reflection phase variation as a function of ring diameter is controlled by the difference in the centre resonant frequency of the two arrays. Simulated and measured results at X-band demonstrate that this parameter can be used to reduce the gradient and improve the linearity of the reflection phase versus ring size slope. These are necessary conditions for the re-radiating elements to maximise the bandwidth of a microstrip reflectarray antenna. The scattering properties of a conventional dual resonant multilayer structure and an array of concentric rings printed on a metal backed dielectric substrate are compared and the trade-off in performance is discussed.

A new quadrifilar antenna has been developed for generating circularly polarized backfire radiation. The antenna consists of two orthogonal rectangular conducting loops, each incorporating capacitive coupling and fed using either a single or two coaxial cables. Though the geometry is much simpler than a conventional quadrifilar helix antenna, the radiation pattern performance is very similar. Measured and simulated patterns are compared for two antennas with different feed arrangements. It is shown that the resonant structure can produce a cardioid pattern with a directivity of 4.5 dB (120 3-dB beamwidth) and a front-to-back ratio of more than 20 dB at the center operating frequency. A simple molecular analytical theory of dielectric relaxation in strongly polar fluids is considered in terms of a semi- phenomenological approach. Theoretical spectra epsilon(v), a(v) of complex permittivity and absorption coefficient are fully determined by a form of intermolecular potential well, in which a dipole reorients. In a recent publication by VI. Gaiduk, O.F. Nielsen, and T.S. Perova [J. Molliq 95 (1002) 1-25] the wideband spectra of liquid H2O and D2O were described in terms of a composite model comprising the rectangular and the cosine squared potential wells. Much better results are achieved in this work, where the rectangular well is replaced by a well with a rounded bottom termed the hat-curved well. The spectrum of the auto-correlation function (ACF) is calculated for such a potential. The proposed theory of a composite model, comprising hat-curved and parabolic wells, is applied for liquid water. This model is capable for describing the Debye relaxation region, the second relaxation region in the submillimeter wavelength range, and the far infra-red (FIR) e(v), a(v) spectra, where an intense librational band and an additional weak band are placed, respectively, near 700 cm(-1) and 200 cm(-1). The latter band reflects the features of so-called specific (viz. directly related to H-bonds) interactions and the former band reflects the features of unspecific interactions. The physical mechanisms connected with these types of interactions are discussed in terms of two relevant types of water structure (types of molecular rotation). It is shown how the Debye rotational diffusion model of dielectric relaxation of polar molecules (which may be described in microscopic fashion as the diffusion limit of a discrete time random walk on the surface of the unit sphere) may be extended to yield the empirical Havriliak-Negami (HN) equation of anomalous dielectric relaxation from a microscopic model based on a kinetic equation just as in the Debye model. This kinetic equation is obtained by means of a generalization of the noninertial Fokker-Planck equation of conventional Brownian motion (generally known as the Smoluchowski equation) to fractional kinetics governed by the HN relaxation mechanism. For the simple case of noninteracting dipoles it may be solved by Fourier transform techniques to yield the Green function and the complex dielectric susceptibility corresponding to the HN anomalous relaxation mechanism.
