The linear and nonlinear properties of small-amplitude electron-acoustic solitary waves are investigated via the fluid dynamical approach. A three-component plasma is considered, composed of hot electrons, cold electrons, and ions (considered stationary at the scale of interest). A dissipative (wave damping) effect is assumed due to electron-neutral collisions. The background (hot) electrons are characterized by an energetic (excessively superthermal) population and are thus modeled via a κ-type nonthermal distribution. The linear characteristics of electron-acoustic excitations are discussed, for different values of the plasma parameters (superthermality index κ and cold versus hot electron population concentration β). Large wavelengths (beyond a threshold value) are shown to be overdamped. The reductive perturbation technique is used to derive a dissipative Korteweg de-Vries (KdV) equation for small-amplitude electrostatic potential disturbances. These are expressed by exact solutions in the form of dissipative solitary waves, whose dynamics is investigated analytically and numerically. Our results should be useful in elucidating the behavior of space and experimental plasmas characterized by a coexistence of electron populations at different temperatures, where electron-neutral collisions are of relevance.

Effective collision strengths are presented for the Fe-peak element Fe III at electron temperatures (Te in degrees Kelvin) in the range 2 × 103 to 1 × 106. Forbidden transitions results are given between the 3d6, 3d54s, and the 3d54p manifolds applicable to the modeling of laboratory and astrophysical plasmas.

We report results for e(+/-)-Ps(Is) scattering in the energy range up to 80 eV calculated in 9-state and 30-state coupled pseudostate approximations. Cross-sections are presented for elastic scattering, ortho-para conversion, discrete excitation, ionization and total scattering. Resonances associated with the Ps(n = 2) threshold are also examined and their positions and widths determined. Very good agreement is obtained with the variational calculations of Ward et al. [J. Phys. B 20 (1987) 127] below 5.1 eV. (C) 2004 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Distorted-wave Born approximation calculations for Ps formation in positron impact on He, Ne, Ar, Kr and Xe are reported for the energy range up to 200 eV. Capture into the n = 1, 2 and 3 states of Ps is calculated explicitly and 1/n(3) scaling is used to estimate capture into states with n > 3. The calculations for the heavier noble gases allow for capture not only from the outer np(6) shell of the atom but also from the first inner ns(2) shell. However, the inner shell capture is found to be very small. Although by no means unambiguous, the calculations provide some support to the conjecture of Larrichia et al. [J. Phys. B 35 (2002) 2525] that the double peak and shoulder structures observed experimentally for Ps formation in Ar, Kr and Xe arise from formation in excited states. (C) 2004 Elsevier B.V. We have performed a kinematically complete experiment and calculations on single ionization in 100 MeV/amu C6+ + He collisions. For electrons ejected into the scattering plane (defined by the initial and final projectile momentum vectors) our first- and higher-order calculations are in good agreement with the data. In the plane perpendicular to the scattering plane and containing the initial projectile axis a strong forward-backward asymmetry is observed. In this plane both the first-order and the higher-order calculations do not provide good agreement neither with the data nor amongst each other.

New results are presented for Ps(1s) scattering by H(1s), He(1(1)S) and Li(2s). Calculations have been performed in a coupled state framework, usually employing pseudostates, and allowing for excitation of both the Ps and the atom. In the Ps(1s)-H(1s) calculations the H- formation channel has also been included using a highly accurate H- wave function. Resonances resulting from unstable states in which the positron orbits H- have been calculated and analysed. The new Ps(1s)-He(1(1)S) calculations still fail to resolve existing discrepancies between theory and experiment at very low energies. The possible importance of the Ps(-) formation channel in all three collision systems is discussed. (C) 2004 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The effects of electron correlation and second-order terms on theoretical total cross sections of transfer ionization in collisions of the helium atom with fast H+, He2+ and Li3+ ions are studied and reported. The total cross sections are calculated using highly correlated wavefunctions with expansion of the transition amplitude in the Born series through the second order. The results of these calculations are in sensible agreement with experimental data.

Results are presented of high-resolution scattering experiments involving electron collisions with CO2 and CS2, between a few meV and 200 meV impact energy. Virtual state scattering is shown to dominate the low-energy behaviour for both species. The most striking features of the scattering spectrum for CS2 are, however, giant resonances with cross sections greater by more than an order of magnitude than those generally encountered in low-energy scattering. A strong feature centred at 15 meV is attributed to the involvement of CS2- and is interpreted to be a consequence of the virtual state effect.

The first complete multi-state CDW close coupling calculations which use a fully normalized basis set are performed. The results obtained at impact energies in the region of 10 keV for total and n = 2 capture cross sections are in reasonably good accord with experiment despite the fact that only the ground states of both species and the n = 2 states of the projectile are incorporated into the model. The theory has significant advantages over other atomic and molecular expansions which may require extensive bases to obtain similar accuracy.

Recent experimental data for fully differential cross sections have been compared to various continuum-distorted-wave eikonal-initial-state models without much success, despite good agreement with double-differential cross sections. A four-body model is formulated here and results are presented both when the internuclear potential is omitted and when it is included. They are compared with recent experimental data for fully differential cross sections for 3.6 MeV/u Au-P(Z)++He collisions, Z(P)=24,53.

We extend the semiclassical description of two-state atomic collisions to low energies for which the impact parameter treatment fails. The problem reduces to solving a system of first-order differential equations with coefficients whose semiclassical asymptotes experience the Stokes phenomenon in the complex coordinate plane. Primitive semiclassical and uniform Airy approximations are discussed.
