We have recorded a new corpus of emotionally coloured conversations. Users were recorded while holding conversations with an operator who adopts in sequence four roles designed to evoke emotional reactions. The operator and the user are seated in separate rooms; they see each other through teleprompter screens, and hear each other through speakers. To allow high quality recording, they are recorded by five high-resolution, high framerate cameras, and by four microphones. All sensor information is recorded synchronously, with an accuracy of 25 μs. In total, we have recorded 20 participants, for a total of 100 character conversational and 50 non-conversational recordings of approximately 5 minutes each. All recorded conversations have been fully transcribed and annotated for five affective dimensions and partially annotated for 27 other dimensions. The corpus has been made available to the scientific community through a web-accessible database.

The photocatalytic activity of self-cleaning glass is assessed using a resazurin (Rz) photocatalyst activity indicator ink, i.e. Rz paii, via both the rate of change in the colour of the ink (blue to pink), R(Abs), and the rate of change in the fluorescence intensity, R(Fl), (λ(excitation) = 593 nm; λ(emission) = 639 nm) of the ink. In both cases the kinetics are zero order. Additional work with a range of glass samples of different photocatalytic activity reveal R(Abs) is directly related to R(Fl), thereby showing that the latter, like the former, can be used to provide a measure of the photocatalytic activity of the sample under test. The measured value of R(Fl) is found to be the same for 5 pieces of, otherwise identical, selfcleaning glass with: black, red, blue, yellow and no coloured tape stuck to their backs, which demonstrates that R(Fl) measurements can be used to measure photocatalytic activity under conditions of high colour and opacity under which R(Abs) cannot be measured. The relevance of this novel, fluorescence-based paii to the assessment of the activity of highly coloured, opaque photocatalytic samples, such as paints and tiles, is discussed briefly.

Coloured effluents from textile industries are a problem in many rivers and waterways. Prediction of adsorption capacities of dyes by adsorbents is important in design considerations. The sorption of three basic dyes, namely Basic Blue 3, Basic Yellow 21 and Basic Red 22, onto peat is reported. Equilibrium sorption isotherms have been measured for the three single component systems. Equilibrium was achieved after twenty-one days. The experimental isotherm data were analysed using Langmuir, Freundlich, Redlich-Peterson, Temkin and Toth isotherm equations. A detailed error analysis has been undertaken to investigate the effect of using different error criteria for the determination of the single component isotherm parameters and hence obtain the best isotherm and isotherm parameters which describe the adsorption process. The linear transform model provided the highest R2 regression coefficient with the Redlich-Peterson model. The Redlich-Peterson model also yielded the best fit to experimental data for all three dyes using the non-linear error functions. An extended Langmuir model has been used to predict the isotherm data for the binary systems using the single component data. The correlation between theoretical and experimental data had only limited success due to competitive and interactive effects between the dyes and the dye-surface interactions.

The paper outlines the effects of polymer conditioning on alum sludge properties, such as floc size, density, fractal dimension (DF) and rheological properties. Experimental results demonstrate that polymer conditioning of alum sludge leads to: larger floc size with a plateau reached in higher doses; higher densities associated with higher doses; increased degree of compactness; and an initial decrease followed by an increase of supernatant viscosity with continued increase in polymer dose. The secondary focus of this paper dwells on a comparison of the estimates of optimum dose using different criteria that emanate from established dewatering tests such as CST, SRF, liquid phase viscosity and modified SRF as well as a simple settlement test in terms of CML30. Alum sludge was derived from a water works treating coloured, low-turbidity raw waters.

After thermal treatment of a mixture of glucose and glycine for 2 h at 125 degreesC, about 60% of the starting material was converted into nonsoluble, black pigments, whereas 40% of the mixture was still water-soluble. Dialysis of the latter fraction revealed 30.4% of low molecular weight compounds (LMWs; MW <10 000 De) and 10.0% high-molecular weight products [HMWs; MW greater than or equal to 10000 Dal. The water-soluble Maillard reaction products (MRPs) were separated by gel permeation chromatography and ultrafiltration, revealing that 60% of the water-soluble products of the total carbohydrate/amino acid mixture had MWs <1 000 Da and consisted mainly of non-coloured reaction products. MRPs with MWs between 1000 and 30000 Da were Found in comparatively low yields (about 1.3%). In contrast, about 31.1% of the MRPs exhibited MWs > 30000 Da, amongst which 14.5% showed MWs > 100000 Da, thus indicating an oligomerisation of LMWs to melanoidins under roasting conditions. To investigate the physiological effects of these MRPs, xenobiotic enzyme activities were analysed in intestinal Caco-2 cells. For Phase-I NADPH-cytochrome c-reductase, the activity in the presence of the LMW and HMW fraction was decreased by 13% and 22%: respectively. Phase-II glutathione-S-transferase activity decreased by 15% and 18%, respectively, after incubation with the LMW and the HMW fractions. Considering the different yields, 30% and 10%, respectively, of the LMW and the HMW fractions, the total amount of the LMW fraction present in the glucose-glycine mixture is more active in modulating three enzyme activities than that of the HMW fraction.

A range of malts, as well as their high- and low-molecular-mass fractions, has been examined by capillary electrophoresis in phosphate buffer, pH 2.5, and in carbonate buffer, pH 9.5, and the results have been compared with those for roasted barley and for caramels. The malts fall into two categories: (i) the lightly roasted malts, where the high-molecular-mass coloured fraction is negatively charged at pH 9.5 and positively charged at pH 2.5; and (ii) the highly roasted malts (and the roasted barley), where the high-molecular-mass fraction migrates close to the electro-osmotic flow at both pH 9.5 and 2.5, implying that it carries little or no charge. The former category shows migration patterns similar to Class III caramels, whereas the latter migrates differently from Class I, III and IV caramels as well as from the former. Capillary electrophoresis therefore has considerable potential for differentiating between malts and between malts and caramels and roasted barley. (C) 2002 Society of Chemical Industry.

The acid anthraquinone dye Tectilon Blue (TB4R) is a major coloured component from the aqueous effluent of a carpet printing plant in Northern Ireland. The aerobic biodegradation of TB4R has been investigated experimentally in batch systems, using three strains of bacteria, namely, Bacillus gordonae (NCIMB 12553), Bacillus benzeovorans (NCIMB 12555) and Pseudomonas putida (NCIMB 9776). All three strains successfully decolourised the dye, and results were correlated using Michaelis-Menten kinetic theory. A recalculation of the reaction rate constants, to account for biosorption, gave an accurate simulation of the colour removal over a 24-h period. Up to 19% of the decolorisation was found to be caused by biosorption of the dye onto the biomass, with the majority of the decolorisation caused by utilisation of the dye by the bacteria. The reaction rate was found to be intermediate between zero and first order at dye concentrations of 200-1000 mg/l. (C) 2000 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.

The importance and use of text extraction from camera based coloured scene images is rapidly increasing with time. Text within a camera grabbed image can contain a huge amount of meta data about that scene. Such meta data can be useful for identification, indexing and retrieval purposes. While the segmentation and recognition of text from document images is quite successful, detection of coloured scene text is a new challenge for all camera based images. Common problems for text extraction from camera based images are the lack of prior knowledge of any kind of text features such as colour, font, size and orientation as well as the location of the probable text regions. In this paper, we document the development of a fully automatic and extremely robust text segmentation technique that can be used for any type of camera grabbed frame be it single image or video. A new algorithm is proposed which can overcome the current problems of text segmentation. The algorithm exploits text appearance in terms of colour and spatial distribution. When the new text extraction technique was tested on a variety of camera based images it was found to out perform existing techniques (or something similar). The proposed technique also overcomes any problems that can arise due to an unconstraint complex background. The novelty in the works arises from the fact that this is the first time that colour and spatial information are used simultaneously for the purpose of text extraction.

Shells of Calliostoma zizyphinum taken from Strangford Lough, N. Ireland are divisible into three distinct colour forms: white (=var lyonsi) intermediate (a pale variegated form) and purple (a dark variegated form). The predominance of white and pale shelled individuals within and the absence of white Calliostoma outside the lough was confirmed. The proportions of animals with white and variegated shells at selected sites were almost identical with those previously documented, suggesting a temporal stability of colour form ratios. No differences in shell thickness and pedal adhesion were demonstrated between these forms. Snails with white shells reflect radiant heat better, have lighter coloured feet, move more rapidly, show a greater incidence of shell repair and are more frequently exposed on weed at low tide, than those with either intermediate or purple shells. Increased proportions of white individuals may be associated with high population densities. Under such circumstances, it is suggested that increased mobility may, by increasing dispersion, reduce intraspecific competition. In the event of exposure at low tide a white shell would help minimize thermal stress.

There are multiple reasons to expect that recognising the verbal content of emotional speech will be a difficult problem, and recognition rates reported in the literature are in fact low. Including information about prosody improves recognition rate for emotions simulated by actors, but its relevance to the freer patterns of spontaneous speech is unproven. This paper shows that recognition rate for spontaneous emotionally coloured speech can be improved by using a language model based on increased representation of emotional utterances. The models are derived by adapting an already existing corpus, the British National Corpus (BNC). An emotional lexicon is used to identify emotionally coloured words, and sentences containing these words are recombined with the BNC to form a corpus with a raised proportion of emotional material. Using a language model based on that technique improves recognition rate by about 20%. (c) 2005 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

For many years psychological research on facial expression of emotion has relied heavily on a recognition paradigm based on posed static photographs. There is growing evidence that there may be fundamental differences between the expressions depicted in such stimuli and the emotional expressions present in everyday life. Affective computing, with its pragmatic emphasis on realism, needs examples of natural emotion. This paper describes a unique database containing recordings of mild to moderate emotionally coloured responses to a series of laboratory based emotion induction tasks. The recordings are accompanied by information on self-report of emotion and intensity, continuous trace-style ratings of valence and intensity, the sex of the participant, the sex of the experimenter, the active or passive nature of the induction task and it gives researchers the opportunity to compare expressions from people from more than one culture.

A detailed study of the action of alkali on methylene blue (Cl. Basic Blue 9) and other thiazine dyes was carried out through a combination of UV/visible spectroscopy, thin layer chromatography, mass and NMR spectrometry and computational methods. In 0.1 M aq alkali solution, methylene blue forms a highly coloured, lipophilic species that is mainly Bernthsen's methylene violet i.e. a hydrolysis decomposition product, this being contrary to the report of a red N-hydroxy methylene blue adduct. The nature of the heterocyclic nitrogen atom in C.I. Basic Blue 9 is discussed and it is concluded there is no basis for the proposal of nucleophile addition at this site of the dye. In contrast, other thiazine dyes are deprotonated by alkali to form their neutral, highly coloured, lipophilic conjugate base forms. (C) 2010 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

An oxygen indicator is described, comprising nanoparticles of titania dispersed in hydroxyethyl cellulose (HEC) polymer film containing a sacrificial electron donor, glycerol, and the redox indicator, indigo-tetrasulfonate (ITS). The indicator is blue-coloured in the absence of UV light, however upon exposure to UV light it not only loses its colour but also luminesces, unless and until it is exposed to oxygen, whereupon its original colour is restored. The initial photobleaching spectral ( absorbance and luminescence) response characteristics in air and in vacuum are described and discussed in terms of a simple reaction scheme involving UV activation of the titania photocatalyst particles, which are used to reduce the redox dye, ITS, to its leuco form, whilst simultaneously oxidising the glycerol to glyceraldehye. The response characteristics of the activated, that is, UV photobleached, form of the indicator to oxygen are also reported and the possible uses of such an indicator to measure ambient O-2 levels are discussed.
