A full-electron coupled-state treatment of positronium (Ps)- inert gas scattering is developed within the context of the frozen target approximation. Calculations are performed for Ps(Is) scattering by Ne and Ar in the impact energy range 0-40 eV using coupled pseudostate expansions consisting of nine and 22 Ps states. The purpose of the pseudostates is primarily to represent ionization of the Ps which is found to be a major process at the higher energies. First Born estimates of target excitation are used to complement the frozen target results. The available experimental data are discussed in detail. It is pointed out that the very low energy measurements (less than or equal to2 eV) correspond to the momentum transfer cross section sigma(mom) and not to the elastic cross section sigma(el). Calculation shows that sigma(mom), and sigma(el) diverge very rapidly with increasing energy and consequently comparisons of the low-energy data with ITel can be very misleading. Agreement between the calculations and the low-energy measurements of anion as well;as higher energy (greater than or equal to15 eV) beam measurements of the total cross section, is less than satisfactory. Results for Ps(1s) scattering by Kr and Xe in the static-exchange approximation are also presented.

Electron-impact scattering data for argon and its ions continue to be of interest in studies of magnetically confined plasmas. In an earlier paper, Griffin et al (1997 J. Phys. B: At. Mol. Opt. Phys. 30 3543) employed the results of 28-term and 40-term R-matrix calculations of electron-impact excitation in Ar+ to carry out a collisional-radiative modelling study of the impurity influx of argon in tokamaks. We have now completed a 452-term R-matrix with pseudo-states (RMPS) calculation of electron-impact excitation for Ar+ in order to provide more accurate excitation data; using these improved data, we have repeated the modelling studies presented in the earlier paper. We compare our excitation data, as well as the results of the collisional radiative calculations, with those arising from the 40-term R-matrix calculation and find significant differences.

Energies for the lowest 49 levels among the 1s(2) and 1snl (n = 2-5) configurations of Ar XVII have been calculated using the GRASP code of Dyall et al. (1989, Comput. Phys. Comm., 55, 424). Additionally, radiative rates, oscillator strengths, and line strengths are calculated for all electric dipole (E1), magnetic dipole (M1), electric quadrupole (E2), and magnetic quadrupole (M2) transitions among these levels. Furthermore, collision strengths have also been calculated for all the 1176 transitions among the above 49 levels using the Dirac Atomic R-matrix Code (DARC) of Norrington & Grant (2005, Comput. Phys. Commun., in preparation), over a wide energy range up to 580 Ryd. Resonances have been resolved in the threshold region, and effective collision strengths have been obtained over a wide temperature range up to log T-e = 7.2 K. Comparisons are made with the limited results available in the literature, and the accuracy of the data is assessed. Our energy levels are estimated to be accurate to better than 0.1%, whereas results for other parameters are probably accurate to better than 20%.
