Anisotropic metamaterials composed of 2D periodic infi- nite and finite periodic lattices of lumped inductor (L) and capacitor (C) circuits have been explored. The unique features of wave channeling on such anisotropic lattices and scattering at their interfaces and edges are reviewed and illustrated by the examples of the specific arrangements. The lattice unit cells composed of inductors and capacitors (basic mesh) as well as of assemblies comprised of double series, double parallel, and mixed parallel-series L-C circuits are discussed.

The mouse bioassay is the methodology that is most widely used to detect okadaic acid (OA) in shellfish samples. This is one of the best-known toxins, and it belongs to the family of marine biotoxins referred to as the diarrhetic shellfish poisons (DSP). Due to animal welfare concerns, alternative methods of toxin detection are being sought. A rapid and specific biosensor immunoassay method was developed and validated for the detection of OA. An optical sensor instrument based on the surface plasmon resonance (SPR) phenomenon was utilised. A polyclonal antibody to OA was raised against OA-bovine thyroglobulin conjugate and OA-N-hydroxy succinimide ester was immobilised onto an amine sensor chip surface. The assay parameters selected for the analysis of the samples were: antibody dilution, 1/750; ratio of antibody to standard, 1:1; volume of sample injected, 25 mu l min(-1); flow rate, 25 mu l min(-1). An assay action limit of 126 ng g(-1) was established by analysing of 20 shellfish samples spiked with OA at the critical concentration of 160 ng g(-1), which is the action limit established by the European Union (EU). At this concentration of OA, the assay delivered coefficient of variations (CVs) of

The two plants investigated here (Fagonia cretica L. and Hedera nepalensis K. Koch) have been previously reported as natural folk medicines for the treatment of diabetes but until now no scientific investigation of potential anti-diabetic effects has been reported.
Materials and methods
In vitro inhibitory effect of the two tested plants and their five isolated compounds on the dipeptidyl peptidase 4 (DPP-4) was studied for the assessment of anti-diabetic activity.
Results
A crude extract of Fagonia cretica possessed good inhibitory activity (IC50value: 38.1 μg/ml) which was also present in its n-hexane (FCN), ethyl acetate (FCE) or aqueous (FCA) fractions. A crude extract of Hedera nepalensis (HNC) possessed even higher inhibitory activity (IC50value: 17.2 μg/ml) and this activity was largely retained when further fractionated in either ethyl acetate (HNE; IC50: 34.4 μg/ml) or n-hexane (HNN; 34.2 μg/ml). Bioactivity guided isolation led to the identification of four known compounds (isolated for the first time) from Fagonia cretica: quinovic acid (1), quinovic acid-3β-O-β-d-glycopyranoside (2), quinovic acid-3β-O-β-d-glucopyranosyl-(28→1)-β-d-glucopyranosyl ester (3), and stigmasterol (4) all of which inhibited DPP-4 activity (IC50: 30.7, 57.9, 23.5 and >100 μM, respectively). The fifth DPP-4 inhibitor, the triterpenoid lupeol (5) was identified in Hedera nepalensis (IC50: 31.6 μM).
Conclusion
The experimental study revealed that Fagonia cretica and Hedera nepalensis contain compounds with significant DPP-4 inhibitory activity which should be further investigated for their anti-diabetic potential.

Channelled waves in 2-D periodic anisotropic L-C mesh metamaterials have been investigated. Circuit simulation and the newly developed analytical model of a unit cell have demonstrated full qualitative agreement for both lossless and lossy cases. Isofrequencies for a lattice unit cell and the circuit simulations of finite meshes have shown that propagating waves are channelled from a point source as pencil beams which can travel only along specific trajectories. The beam direction varies with frequency, and at the resonance frequency, the phase and group velocities of the travelling wave are orthogonal. The effect of losses was explored, and it was shown that losses cause qualitative changes of the channelled wave type. It was proven that the channelled waves do not follow the laws of geometrical optics (Snell's law, specular reflection, etc.) at the interfaces of L-C meshes but are governed by the conditions of phase synchronism and impedance matching. Only in the special case of dual L-C and C-L meshes with the interface parallel to the axis of rectangular grid excited at the resonance frequency (X=1) do the channels follow the trajectories of optical rays. A planar mesh test cell has been designed and used for retrieving the unit cell L-C parameters from the S-parameter measurements.

This paper discusses the approaches and techniques used to build a realistic numerical model to analyse the cooling phase of the injection moulding process. The procedures employed to select an appropriate mesh and the boundary and initial conditions for the problem are discussed and justified. The final model is validated using direct comparisons with experimental results generated in an earlier study. The model is shown to be a useful tool for further studies aimed at optimising the cooling phase of the injection moulding process. Using the numerical model provides additional information relating to changes in conditions throughout the process, which otherwise could not be deduced or assessed experimentally. These results, and other benefits related to the use of the model, are also discussed in the paper. © 2007 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The electronic and bonding properties of nitrogenated carbon nanotubes (N-CNTs) exposed to chlorine plasma were investigated using C and N K-edge x-ray absorption near-edge structure (XANES) and scanning photoelectron microscopy (SPEM). The C and N K-edge XANES spectra of chlorine-treated N-CNTs consistently reveal the formation of pyridinelike N-CNTs by the observation of 1s ->pi(*)(e(2u)) antibonding and 1s ->pi(*)(b(2g)) bonding states. The valence-band photoemission spectra obtained from SPEM images indicate that chlorination of the nanotubes enhances the C-N bonding. First-principles calculations of the partial densities of states in conjunction with C K-edge XANES data identify the presence of C-Cl bonding in chlorine treated N-CNTs. The acid anthraquinone dye Tectilon Blue (TB4R) is a major coloured component from the aqueous effluent of a carpet printing plant in Northern Ireland. The aerobic biodegradation of TB4R has been investigated experimentally in batch systems, using three strains of bacteria, namely, Bacillus gordonae (NCIMB 12553), Bacillus benzeovorans (NCIMB 12555) and Pseudomonas putida (NCIMB 9776). All three strains successfully decolourised the dye, and results were correlated using Michaelis-Menten kinetic theory. A recalculation of the reaction rate constants, to account for biosorption, gave an accurate simulation of the colour removal over a 24-h period. Up to 19% of the decolorisation was found to be caused by biosorption of the dye onto the biomass, with the majority of the decolorisation caused by utilisation of the dye by the bacteria. The reaction rate was found to be intermediate between zero and first order at dye concentrations of 200-1000 mg/l. (C) 2000 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.
