The objectives of this study were to determine the fracture toughness of adhesive interfaces between dentine and clinically relevant, thin layers of dental luting cements. Cements tested included a conventional glass-ionomer, F (Fuji I), a resin-modified glass-ionomer, FP (Fuji Plus) and a compomer cement, D (DyractCem). Ten miniature short-bar chevron notch specimens were manufactured for each cement, each comprising a 40 µm thick chevron of lute, between two 1.5 mm thick blocks of bovine dentine, encased in resin composite. The interfacial KIC results (MN/m3/2) were median (range): F; 0.152 (0.14-0.16), FP; 0.306 (0.27-0.37), D; 0.351 (0.31-0.37). Non-parametric statistical analysis showed that the fracture toughness of F was significantly lower (p

NMR studies were conducted with the aim of determining the diastereoisomeric ratio of a commercially supplied sample of mesoridazine (MES) and to compare the results with a freshly synthesised sample of MES. The results indicated that the commercially supplied MES consisted almost entirely of one diastereoisomeric pair, which was in agreement with previous findings reported by Eap et al. (J Chromatogr 669:271-279, 1995). The synthesised sample of MES was analysed by NMR in two stages: 1) as the initial product isolated as the free base from the direct synthesis, and 2) as the free base isolated from the crystallised besylate salt of the synthetic product. The NMR results show that the initial synthetic product consisted of two equal pairs of diastereoisomers. The diastereoisomeric pairs were further separated by the addition of the chiral shift reagent (R)-(-)-N-(3,5 dinitrobenzoyl)-alpha-benzylamine to reveal equal quantities of all four enantiomers, clearly observed at the methyl sulfoxide proton peak of the NMR scan. The sample obtained from the crystallisation of MES besylate, however, indicated a significant difference, with a diastereoisomeric ratio of 75:25. The results suggest that MES besylate undergoes preferential crystallisation of one pair of diastereoisomers, with the other pair remaining in solution. (C) 2004 Wiley-Liss, Inc.

Up until now, aircraft surface smoothness requirements have been aerodynamically driven with tighter manufacturing tolerance to minimize drag, that is, the tighter the tolerance, the higher is the assembly cost in the process of manufacture. In the current status of commercial transport aircraft operation, it can be seen that the unit cost contributes to the aircraft direct operating cost considerably more than the contribution made by the cost of block fuel consumed for the mission profile. The need for a customer-driven design strategy to reduce direct operating cost by reducing aircraft cost through manufacturing tolerance relaxation at the wetted surface without unduly penalizing parasite drag is investigated. To investigate this, a preliminary study has been conducted at 11 key manufacturing features on the surface assembly of an isolated nacelle. In spite of differences in parts design and manufacture, the investigated areas associated with the assembly of nacelles are typical of generic patterns in the assembly of other components of aircraft. The study is to be followed up by similar studies extended to lifting surfaces and fuselage

Alpha-synuclein is a major component of Lewy bodies in Parkinson's disease and is found associated with several other forms of dementia. As with other neurodegenerative diseases, the ability of alpha-synuclein to aggregate and form fibrillar deposits seems central to its pathology. We have defined a sequence within the NAC region of alpha-synuclein that is necessary for aggregation. Exploitation of chemically modified analogues of this peptide may produce inhibitors of aggregation.
