New absolute cross sections for dissociative electron attachment to HCCCN (cyanoacetylene or propiolonitrile) in the range of 0-10 eV electron energy are presented here, which have been determined from a new analysis of previously reported data (Graupner et al 2006 New J. Phys. 8 117). The highest cross sections are observed for the formation of CN- at 5.3 eV and CCCN- at 5.1 eV; approximately 0.06 Å2 and 0.05 Å2 respectively. As part of the re-analysis, it was necessary to determine absolute cross sections for electron-impact ionization of HCCCN with the binary-encounter Bethe method. These electron-impact ionization absolute cross sections for HCCCN are also presented here; the maximum value was found to be ∼6.6 Å2 at ∼80 eV.

Here a self-consistent one-dimensional continuum model is presented for a narrow gap plane-parallel dc glow discharge. The governing equations consist of continuity and momentum equations for positive and negative ions and electrons coupled with Poisson's equation. A singular perturbation method is developed for the analysis of high pressure dc glow discharge. The kinetic processes of the ionization, electron attachment, and ion-ion recombination are included in the model. Explicit results are obtained for the asymptotic limits: delta=(r(D)/L)(2)--> 0, omega=(r(S)/L)(2)--> 0, where r(D) is the Debye radius, r(S) is recombination length, and L is the gap length. The discharge gap divides naturally into four layers with multiple space scales: anode fall region, positive column, transitional region, cathode fall region and diffusion layer adjacent to the cathode surface, its formation is discussed. The effects of the gas pressure, gap spacing and dc voltage on the electrical properties of the layers and its dimension are investigated. (C) 2000 American Institute of Physics. The transfer ionization process offers a unique opportunity to study radial and angular electron correlations in the helium atom. We report calculations for the multiple differential cross sections of the transfer ionization process p + He --> H + He++ + e(-). The results of these calculations demonstrate the strong sensitivity of the fully differential cross sections to fine details of electron correlation in the target atom. Specifically, angular electron correlation in the ground state of helium results in a broad peak in the electron emission spectra in the backward direction, relative to the incoming beam. Our model explains some of the key effects observed in measurements of multiple differential cross sections using the COLTRIMS technique.

A joint theoretical-experimental study of the transfer ionization process p + He -> H-0 + He2+ + e(-) is presented. For the first time all particles in the final state have been detected in triple coincidence. This fully differential measurement is in good agreement with a theoretical model where the target is described by a wavefunction containing both radial and angular correlation terms.

An effective frozen core approximation has been developed and applied to the calculation of energy levels and ionization energies of the beryllium atom in magnetic field strengths up to 2.35 x 10(5) T. Systematic improvement over the existing results for the beryllium ground and low-lying states has been accomplished by taking into account most of the correlation effects in the four-electron system. To our knowledge, this is the first calculation of the electronic properties of the beryllium atom in a strong magnetic field carried out using a configuration interaction approximation and thus allowing a treatment beyond that of Hartree-Fock. Differing roles played by strong magnetic fields in intrashell correlation within different states are observed. In addition, possible ways to gain further improvement in the energies of the states of interest are proposed and discussed briefly.

Electron energy distributions of singly and doubly ionized helium in an intense 390 nm laser field have been measured at two intensities (0.8 PW/cm(2) and 1.1 PW/cm(2), where PW equivalent to 10(15) W/cm(2)). Numerical solutions of the full-dimensional time-dependent helium Schrodinger equation show excellent agreement with the experimental measurements. The high-energy portion of the two-electron energy distributions reveals an unexpected 5U(p) cutoff for the double ionization (DI) process and leads to a proposed model for DI below the quasiclassical threshold.

Recent results for proton-argon total ionization cross sections [Kirchner Phys. Rev. Lett. 79, 1658 (1997)] show large disagreement between theory and experiment for energies below 80 keV. To address this problem we have employed a recently developed theoretical method with a more pragmatic approach to the charge screening both in the initial and final channels. The target is considered as a one-electron atom and the interactions between this active electron and remaining target electrons are treated by a model potential including both short- and long-range effects. In the final channel the usual product of two continuum distorted wave functions each associated with a distinct electron-nucleus interaction is used. New results in the present calculation show good agreement in total cross sections for the energy range 10-300 keV with the measurement of Rudd [Rev. Mod. Phys. 57, 965 (1985)].

We have measured electron impact ionization cross-sections of hydrogen-like iron and hydrogen-like molybdenum with an electron beam ion trap. The measurements were performed in the electron energy range between 13.5 and 40 keV for hydrogen-like iron and between 50 and 80 keV for hydrogen-like molybdenum. (C) 2003 Elsevier Science B.V. A detailed investigation has been carried out of N-2 molecules in intense 55 and 220 fs, linear and circular polarized, 790 nm laser pulses. Using an intensity selective scanning technique, ionization, dissociation, and dissociative ionization channels have been studied. Remarkably similar enhancements of signal with linear polarization observed for double ionization and dissociation channels demonstrate the dominance of dynamic alignment over rescattering effects. Fragmentation energies from dissociative ionization are reasonably well reproduced by classical trajectory calculations, the higher charged fragments displaying evidence of post dissociative ionization.

We implement a parallel, time-dependent hybrid finite-difference Lagrange mesh code to model the electron dynamics of the fixed-nuclei hydrogen molecular ion subjected to intense ultrashort laser Pulses, Ionization rates are calculated and compared with results from a previous finite-difference approach and also with published Floquet results. The sensitivity of the results to the gauge describing the electron-field interaction is studied. Visualizations of the evolving wave packets are also presented in which the formation of a stable bound-state resonance is observed.

We set out aspects of a numerical algorithm used in solving the full-dimensionality time-dependent Schrodinger equation describing the electronic motion of the hydrogen molecular ion driven by an intense, linearly polarized laser pulse aligned along the molecular axis. This algorithm has been implemented within the fixed inter-nuclear separation approximation in a parallel computer code, a brief summary of which is given. Ionization rates are calculated and compared with results from other methods, notably the time-independent Floquet method. Our results compare very favourably with the precise predictions of the Floquet method, although there is some disagreement with other wavepacket calculations. Visualizations of the electron dynamics are also presented in which electron rescattering is observed.
