In recent years, there has been a significant increase in the number of bridges which are being instrumented and monitored on an ongoing basis. This is in part due to the introduction of bridge management systems designed to provide a high level of protection to the public and early warning if the bridge becomes unsafe. This paper investigates a novel alternative; a low-cost method consisting of the use of a vehicle fitted with accelerometers on its axles to monitor the dynamic behaviour of bridges. A simplified half-car vehicle-bridge interaction model is used in theoretical simulations to test the effectiveness of the approach in identifying the damping ratio of the bridge. The method is tested for a range of bridge spans and vehicle velocities using theoretical simulations and the influences of road roughness, initial vibratory condition of the vehicle, signal noise, modelling errors and frequency matching on the accuracy of the results are investigated.

This paper considers whether there is value in introducing student teachers to schools of different ethos as part of their initial teacher education. A 2-year study of undergraduate post-primary student teachers at a university college in Northern Ireland reveals that encounters with schools of different ethos can help student teachers to understand differences between schools and their visions of education, as well as correcting misunderstandings and challenging stereotypes. It is argued that as a result of experiencing diverse examples of ethos, student teachers may also be helped to understand the complexity of schools as organisations and to position themselves and their professional practice within wider debates about the aims of education and schools as communities of practice. © 2008 Elsevier Ltd. Compacted clay fills are generally placed at the optimum value of water content and, immediately after placement, they are unsaturated. Wetting might subsequently occur due, for example, to rainfall infiltration, which can cause volumetric deformation of the fill (either swell or collapse) with associated loss of shear strength and structural integrity. If swelling takes place under partially restrained deformation, due for example to the presence of a buried rigid structure or a retaining wall, additional stresses will develop in the soil and these can be detrimental to the stability of walling elements and other building assets. Factors such as dry density, overburden pressure, compaction water content and type of clay are known to influence the development of stresses. This paper investigates these factors by means of an advanced stress path testing programme performed on four different clays with different mineralogy, index properties and geological histories. Specimens of kaolin clay, London Clay, Belfast Clay and Ampthill Clay were prepared at different initial states and subjected to ‘controlled’ wetting, whereby the suction was reduced gradually to zero under laterally restrainedconditions (i.e. K0 conditions). The results showed that the magnitude of the increase in horizontal stresses (and therefore the increase of K0) is influenced by the overburden pressure, compaction water content, dry density at the time of compaction and mineralogy.

BACKGROUND: Lacrimo-auriculo-dento-digital (LADD) syndrome (OMIM #149730) is an autosomal-dominant congenital disorder that can be caused by heterozygous mutations in the tyrosine kinase domains of the genes encoding fibroblast growth factor receptors 2 (FGFR2) and 3 (FGFR3), and has been found in association with a mutation in the FGF10 gene, which encodes an Fgfr ligand. Clinical signs vary, but the condition is characterised by involvement of the lacrimal and salivary systems, cup-shaped ears, hearing loss and dental abnormalities. Additional features may include involvement of the hands and feet with other body systems particularly the kidneys.

CASE REPORT: Previous literature on the subject has been reviewed and this case is the first presentation of LADD syndrome in the Republic of Ireland, as a sporadic case in a 12-year-old girl who exhibited a range of dental and digital anomalies.

TREATMENT: Her general medical practitioner managed her medical care whilst her oral care necessitated a multidisciplinary approach involving restorative and orthodontic elements.

FOLLOW-UP: The initial restorative phase of treatment has successfully improved the appearance of the patient's anterior teeth using direct resin composite build-ups.

Introduction: Chronic atypical neutrophilic dermatosis with lipodystrophy and elevated temperature (CANDLE) is an auto inflammatory syndrome caused by an autosomal recessive gene mutation. This very rare syndrome has been reported in only 14 patients worldwide. A number of clinical signs have been reported including joint contractures, muscle atrophy, microcytic anaemia, and panniculitis-induced childhood lipodystrophy. Further symptoms include recurrent fevers, purpuric skin lesions, periorbital erythema and failure to thrive. This is the first reported case of periodontal manifestations associated with CANDLE syndrome.
Case Presentation: An 11 year old boy was referred to Cork University Dental School and Hospital with evidence of severe periodontal destruction. The patient’s medical condition was managed in Great Ormond Street Children’s Hospital, London. The patient’s dental management included initial treatment to remove teeth of hopeless prognosis followed by prosthodontic rehabilitation using removable partial dentures. This was followed by further non-surgical periodontal treatment and maintenance. In the long term, the potential definitive restorative options, including dental implants, will be evaluated in discussion with the patient’s medical team.
Conclusion: Periodontitis as a manifestation of systemic disease is one of seven categories of periodontitis as defined by the American Academy of Periodontology 1999 classification system. A number of systemic diseases have been associated with advanced periodontal destruction including Diabetes Mellitus, Leukaemia and Papillon-Lefevre Syndrome. In the case described, treatment necessitated a multidisciplinary approach with input from medical and dental specialities for a young patient with severe periodontal destruction associated with CANDLE syndrome.

An understanding of the mechanisms underlying the development of resistance to chemotherapy treatment is a gateway to the introduction of novel therapies and improved outcomes for women presenting with ovarian cancer (OC). The desired apoptotic death post-chemotherapy depends on an intact and fully functioning cell cycle machinery.

In this study we demonstrate that stable expression of miR-433 renders OC cells more resistant to paclitaxel treatment. Interestingly, only cells with the highest miR-433 survived paclitaxel suggesting the possible role of miR-433 in cancer recurrence. Importantly, for the first time we demonstrate that miR 433 induces cellular senescence, exemplified by a flattened morphology, the downregulation of phosphorylated Retinoblastoma (p Rb) and increased β galactosidase activity. Surprisingly, miR 433 induced senescence was independent of two well recognised senescent drivers: p21 and p16. Further in silico analysis followed by in vitro experiments identified CKD6 as a novel miR-433 target gene possibly explaining the observed p21 and p16-independent induction of cellular senescence. Another in silico identified miR-433 target gene was CDC27, a protein involved in the regulation of the cell cycle during mitosis. We demonstrate that the overexpression of pre-miR-433 leads to the downregulation of CDC27 in vitro revealing a novel interaction between miR-433 and CDC27, an integral cell cycle regulating protein.

Interestingly, miR-433 expressing cells also demonstrated an ability to impact their tumour microenvironment. We show that miR-433 is present in exosomes released from miR-433 overexpressing and high miR-433 naïve cells. Moreover, growth condition media (GCM) harvested from cells with high miR-433 have higher levels of IL-6 and IL-8, two key cytokines involved in the senescence associated secretory phenotype (SASP). Importantly, GCM from miR-433-enriched cells repressed the growth of co-cultured cells with initial studies showing a GCM-dependent induction of chemoresistance.

In conclusion, data in this study highlights how the aberrant expression miR-433 contributes to chemoresistance in OC cells. We postulate that standard chemotherapy, particularly paclitaxel, used to treat women with OC may have an attenuated ability to kill cells harbouring increased levels of miR-433, allowing for a subsequent chemoresistant phenotype post-therapy.

The initial growth mechanism of epitaxial BaTiO3 films is studied by combined application of atomic force microscopy, cross sectional high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, and x-ray diffraction. Epitaxial BaTiO3 thin films were grown by pulsed laser deposition on vicinal Nb-doped SrTiO3 (SrTiO3:Nb) (001) substrates with well-defined terraces. X-ray diffraction and cross sectional high-resolution transmission electron microscopy investigations revealed well-defined epitaxial films and a sharp interface between BaTiO3 films and SrTiO3:Nb substrates. The layer-then-island (Stranski-Krastanov mode) growth mechanism observed by analyzing the morphology of a sequence of films with increasing amount of deposited material has been confirmed by microstructure investigations. The growth mechanism of epitaxial BaTiO3 films on vicinal Nb-doped SrTiO3 (srTiO(3):Nb) (001) substrate surfaces was studied in terms of surface morphology, crystalline orientation, microstructure, and film/substrate interface. Well-oriented BaTiO3 thin films were grown on SrTiO3 substrates with well-defined terraces by pulsed laser deposition. The regularly terraced TiO2-terminated surfaces of vicinal SrTiO3:Nb (001) substrates were prepared by a definite chemical and thermal treatment. Under our conditions, BaTiO3 seems to grow with a layer-then-island (Stranski-Krastanov) growth mechanism. In order to investigate the orientation and crystallinity of the BaTiO3 films, x-ray diffraction and high-resolution transmission election microscopy were performed. Ferroelectricity of the BaTiO3 films was proved by electrical measurements performed on Pt/BaTiO3/SrTiO3:Nb heterostructures.

Due to the variability of wind power, it is imperative to accurately and timely forecast the wind generation to enhance the flexibility and reliability of the operation and control of real-time power. Special events such as ramps, spikes are hard to predict with traditional methods using solely recently measured data. In this paper, a new Gaussian Process model with hybrid training data taken from both the local time and historic dataset is proposed and applied to make short-term predictions from 10 minutes to one hour ahead. A key idea is that the similar pattern data in history are properly selected and embedded in Gaussian Process model to make predictions. The results of the proposed algorithms are compared to those of standard Gaussian Process model and the persistence model. It is shown that the proposed method not only reduces magnitude error but also phase error.
