We have previously reported the effectiveness of TiO2 photocatalysis in the destruction of species generated by cyanobacteria, specifically geosmin and microcystin-LR. In this paper we report an investigation of factors which influence the rate of the toxin destruction at the catalyst surface. A primary kinetic solvent isotope effect of approximately 1.5 was observed when the destruction was performed in a heavy water solvent. This is in contrast to previous reports of a solvent isotope effect of approximately 3, however, these studies were undertaken with a different photocatalyst material. The solvent isotope effect therefore appears to be dependent on the photocatalyst material used. The results of the study support the theory that the photocatalytic decomposition occurs on the catalyst surface rather than in the bulk of the solution. Furthermore it appears that the rate determining step is not oxygen reduction as previously reported.

Titanium dioxide (TiO2) photocatalysis has been used to initiate the destruction of nodularin, a natural hepatotoxin produced by cyanobacteria. The destruction process was monitored using liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry analysis which has also enabled the identification of a number of the photocatalytic decomposition products. The reduction in toxicity following photocatalytic treatment was evaluated using protein phosphatase inhibition assay, which demonstrated that the destruction of nodularin was paralleled by an elimination of toxicity.

Geosmin (GSM) and 2-methylisoborneol (MIB) are semi-volatile compounds produced by cyanobacteria in surface waters. These compounds present problems to the drinking water industry and in aquaculture because they can taint water and fish producing an earthy-musty flavour. This paper presents an initial study on the use of TiO2 photocatalysis for the destruction of these compounds in water. The process proved effective with the complete destruction of MIB and GSM being achieved within 60 min. These results suggest that TiO2 photocatalysis will be a successful method for removal of taint compounds from potable water supplies and fish farms.

Microcystins are a family of hepatotoxic peptides produced by freshwater cyanobacteria. Their occurrence in drinking water is of concern since chronic exposure to these toxins causes tumor promotion. It is therefore essential to establish a reliable treatment strategy that will ensure their removal from potable water. We have previously described the rapid destruction of microcystin-LR using TiO2 photocatalysis, however, since there are at least 70 microcystin variants it is essential that the destruction of a number of microcystins be evaluated. In this study the dark adsorption and destruction of four microcystins was followed over a range of pH. All four microcystins were destroyed although the efficiency of their removal varied. The two more hydrophobic microcystins (-LW and -LF) were found to have high dark adsorption (98 and 91% at pH 4) in contrast to microcystin-RR, which was found to have almost no (only 2-3%) dark adsorption across all pH.

Cyanobacterial toxins present in drinking water sources pose a considerable threat to human health. Conventional water treatment systems have proven unreliable for the removal of these toxins and hence new techniques have been investigated. Previous work has shown that TiO2 photocatalysis effectively destroys microcystin-LR in aqueous solutions, however non-toxic by-products were detected. It has been shown that photocatalytic reactions are enhanced by utilisation of alternative electron acceptors. We report here enhanced photocatalytic degradation of microcystin-LR following the addition of hydrogen peroxide to the system. It was also found that hydrogen peroxide with UV illumination alone was capable of decomposing microcystin-LR although at a much slower rate than found for TiO2. No HPLC detectable by-products were found when the TiO2/UV/H2O2 system was used indicating that this method is more effective than TiO2/UV alone. Results however indicated that only 18% mineralisation occurred with the TiO2/UV/H2O2 system and hence undetectable by-products must still be present. At higher concentrations hydrogen peroxide was found to compete with microcystin-LR for surface sites on the catalyst but at lower peroxide concentrations this competitive adsorption was not observed. Toxicity studies showed that both in the presence and absence of H2O2 the microcystin solutions were detoxified. These findings suggest that hydrogen peroxide greatly enhances the photocatalytic oxidation of microcystin-LR.

Theoretical resonance fluorescence calculations are presented of the triatomic C3 radical and are compared with observations of the C3 emission in comets Hale-Bopp and de Vico. A theoretical model of the C3 vibration-rotational structure in the A1Piu - X1Sigmag + electronic system is introduced. The model takes into account the detailed structure of the bending mode nu2 which is responsible for the emission of the 4050 Å group. A total of 1959 levels are considered, with 515 levels in the ground state. The main effort is to model high-resolution spectra of the 4050 Å emission in comets C/1995 O1 Hale-Bopp and 122P/1995 S1 de Vico. The agreement between observed and theoretical spectra is good for a value of the dipole moment derivative of dmu/dr ~ 2.5 Debye Å-1. The modeled C3 emission exhibits a pronounced Swings effect. Sixty samples of milk, Halloumi cheese and local grazing plants (i.e. shrubs) were collected over a year from dairy farms located on three different locations of Cyprus. Major and trace elements were quantified using inductively coupled plasma-atomic emission spectroscopy (ICP-AES). Milk and Halloumi cheese produced in different geographical locations presented significant differences in the concentration of some of the elements analysed. Principal component analysis showed grouping of samples according to the region of production for both milk and cheese samples. These findings show that the assay of elements can provide useful fingerprints for the characterisation of dairy products.

The ammoxidation of ethanol is investigated as a renewable process for the production of acetonitrile from a bio-feedstock. Palladium catalysts are shown to be active and very selective (>99%) to this reaction at moderate to low temperatures (150-240 °C), with acetonitrile yields considered a function of Pd morphology. Further investigations reveal that the stability of these catalysts is influenced by an unselective product, and that any deactivation observed is reversible. Interpretation of this deactivation allows operating conditions to be defined for the stable, high yielding production of acetonitrile from ethanol.

We present a large data set of high-cadence dMe flare light curves obtained with custom continuum filters on the triple-beam, high-speed camera system ULTRACAM. The measurements provide constraints for models of the near-ultraviolet (NUV) and optical continuum spectral evolution on timescales of ≈1 s. We provide a robust interpretation of the flare emission in the ULTRACAM filters using simultaneously obtained low-resolution spectra during two moderate-sized flares in the dM4.5e star YZ CMi. By avoiding the spectral complexity within the broadband Johnson filters, the ULTRACAM filters are shown to characterize bona fide continuum emission in the NUV, blue, and red wavelength regimes. The NUV/blue flux ratio in flares is equivalent to a Balmer jump ratio, and the blue/red flux ratio provides an estimate for the color temperature of the optical continuum emission. We present a new “color-color” relationship for these continuum flux ratios at the peaks of the flares. Using the RADYN and RH codes, we interpret the ULTRACAM filter emission using the dominant emission processes from a radiative-hydrodynamic flare model with a high nonthermal electron beam flux, which explains a hot, T ≈ 104 K, color temperature at blue-to-red optical wavelengths and a small Balmer jump ratio as observed in moderate-sized and large flares alike. We also discuss the high time resolution, high signal-to-noise continuum color variations observed in YZ CMi during a giant flare, which increased the NUV flux from this star by over a factor of 100. Existing compact routing schemes, e.g., Thorup and Zwick [SPAA 2001] and Chechik [PODC 2013], often have no means to tolerate failures, once the system has been setup and started. This paper presents, to our knowledge, the first self-healing compact routing scheme. Besides, our schemes are developed for low memory nodes, i.e., nodes need only O(log2 n) memory, and are thus, compact schemes.
We introduce two algorithms of independent interest: The first is CompactFT, a novel compact version (using only O(log n) local memory) of the self-healing algorithm Forgiving Tree of Hayes et al. [PODC 2008]. The second algorithm (CompactFTZ) combines CompactFT with Thorup-Zwick’s treebased compact routing scheme [SPAA 2001] to produce a fully compact self-healing routing scheme. In the self-healing model, the adversary deletes nodes one at a time with the affected nodes self-healing locally by adding few edges. CompactFT recovers from each attack in only O(1) time and ∆ messages, with only +3 degree increase and O(log∆) graph diameter increase, over any sequence of deletions (∆ is the initial maximum degree).
Additionally, CompactFTZ guarantees delivery of a packet sent from sender s as long as the receiver has not been deleted, with only an additional O(y log ∆) latency, where y is the number of nodes that have been deleted on the path between s and t. If t has been deleted, s gets informed and the packet removed from the network.
