Heat capacities of nine ionic liquids were measured from (293 to 358) K by using a heat flux differential scanning calorimeter. The impact of impurities (water and chloride content) in the ionic liquid was analyzed to estimate the overall uncertainty. The Joback method for predicting ideal gas heat capacities has been extended to ionic liquids by the generation of contribution parameters for three new groups. The principle of corresponding states has been employed to enable the subsequent calculation of liquid heat capacities for ionic liquids, based on critical properties predicted using the modified Lydersen-Joback-Reid method, as a function of the temperature from (256 to 470) K. A relative absolute deviation of 2.9% was observed when testing the model against 961 data points from 53 different ionic liquids reported previously and measured within this study.

The applicability of ionic liquids within the nuclear industry has been investigated. The radiation stability of ionic liquids containing dialkylimidazolium cations has been tested through with alpha, beta and gamma irradiation. The results of these tests suggest that imidazolium salts have stabilities similar to alkylbenzenes and greater than tetrabutylphosphate / odorless kerosene (TBP/OK) mixtures. The oxidative dissolution of uranium dioxide and the anodic dissolution of uranium metal and plutonium metal have been carried out in various ionic liquid media (C) 2002 American Chemical Society.

We report here the improved syntheses of 1-alkyl-3-methylimidazolium ionic liquids. Microwave irradiation drastically reduces the preparation time of 1-alkyl-3-methylimidazolium and N-alkylpyridinium halide salts and, in addition, three halide-free routes to ionic liquids have been developed. New, chiral, imidazolium-based ionic liquids were prepared using both conventional and halide-free procedures. Chirality was introduced in the new compounds at either the cation or the anion, or both.

The first thiazolium gold(III) compound that qualifies as an ionic liquid has been prepared and crystallographically characterized. Hydration of phenylacetylene with this compound as catalyst precursor in ionic liquids indicates that gold(Ill)based ionic liquids could serve both as solvents and catalysts for organic transformations. The potential re-use of catalysts is an advantage achieved by recycling the ionic liquid phase. Various imidazolium-derived ionic liquids as well as the new thiazolium compound can be converted into gold carbene complexes by sequential deprotonation and coordination, opening the way for in situ catalyst tailoring. The volumetric properties of seven {water + ionic liquid} binary mixtures have been studied as a function of temperature from (293 to 343) K. The phase behaviour of the systems was first investigated using a nephelometric method and excess molar volumes were calculated from densities measured using an Anton Paar densimeter and fitted using a Redlich-Kister type equation. Two ionic liquids fully miscible with water (1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate ([CCIm][BF]) and 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium ethylsulfate ([CCIm][EtSO])) and five ionic liquids only partially miscible with water (1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide ([CCIm][NTf]), 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide ([CCIm][NTf]), 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium hexafluorophosphate ([CCIm][PF]), 1-butyl-3-methylpyrrolidinium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide ([CCPyrro][NTf]), and butyltrimethylammonium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide ([N][NTf])) were chosen. Small excess volumes (less than 0.5 cm · mol at 298 K) are obtained compared with the molar volumes of the pure components (less than 0.3% of the molar volume of the pure ionic liquid). For all the considered systems, except for {[CCIm][EtSO] + water}, positive excess molar volumes were calculated. Finally, an increase of the non-ideality character is observed for all the systems as temperature increases. © 2009 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

The reduction of oxygen was studied over a range of temperatures (298-318 K) in n-hexyltriethylammonium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide, [N-6,N-2,N-2,N-2][NTf2], and 1-butyl-2,3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide, [C(4)dmim][NTf2] on both gold and platinum microdisk electrodes, and the mechanism and electrode kinetics of the reaction investigated. Three different models were used to simulate the CVs, based on a simple electron transfer ('E'), an electron transfer coupled with a reversible homogeneous chemical step ('ECrev') and an electron transfer followed by adsorption of the reduction product ('EC(ads)'), and where appropriate, best fit parameters deduced, including the heterogeneous rate constant, formal electrode potential, transfer coefficient, and homogeneous rate constants for the ECrev mechanism, and adsorption/desorption rate constants for the EC(ads) mechanism. It was concluded from the good simulation fits on gold that a simple E process operates for the reduction of oxygen in [N-6,N-2,N-2,N-2][NTf2], and an ECrev process for [C(4)dmim][NTf2], with the chemical step involving the reversible formation of the O-2(center dot-)center dot center dot center dot [C(4)dmim](+) ion-pair. The E mechanism was found to loosely describe the reduction of oxygen in [N-6,N-2,N-2,N-2][NTf2] on platinum as the simulation fits were reasonable although not perfect, especially for the reverse wave. The electrochemical kinetics are slower on Pt, and observed broadening of the oxidation peak is likely due to the adsorption of superoxide on the electrode surface in a process more complex than simple Langmuirian. In [C(4)dmim][NTf2] the O-2(center dot-) predominantly ion-pairs with the solvent rather than adsorbs on the surface, and an ECrev quantitatively describes the reduction of oxygen on Pt also.

This work explores the effects of argon and nitrogen, two electrochemically and chemically inert gases frequently used in sample preparation of room temperature ionic liquid (RTIL) solutions, on the eelectrochemical characterization of ferrocene (Fc) dissolved in the RTIL 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide ([C(2)mim][NTf2]). Remarkably, chronoamperometrically determined diffusion coefficients of Fc in [C(2)mim][NTf2] are found to increase from 4.8 (+/- 0.2) x 10(-11) m(2) s(-1) under vacuum conditions to 6.6 (+/- 0.5) x 10(-11) m(2) s(-1) in an atmosphere of 1 atm Ar. In contrast, exposing a vacuum-purified sample to an atmosphere of 1 atm N-2 resulted in no significant change in the measured diffusion coefficient of Fc. The effect of dissolved argon on diffusion transport is unexpected and has implications in electrochemistry and elsewhere. Fc was found to volatilize under vacuum conditions. We propose, however, that evacuation of the cell by vacuum prior to electrochemical measurements being carried out is the only way to ensure that no contamination of the sample occurs, and use of an in situ method of determining the diffusion coefficient and concentration of Fc dispells, any ambiguity associated with Fc depletion by vacuum.

The effects of such solutes such as halides and water on the physical properties of room temperature ionic liquids (RTILs) have been extensively studied, This work examines the effect of the solute carbon dioxide on the RTIL 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethane-sulfonyl)imide ([C(2)mim][NTf2]) and its influence on the electrochemical characterization of the important redox couple ferrocene/ferrocenium (Fc/Fc(+)). The system was studied using cyclic voltammetry, chronoamperometry, and electron spin resonance (ESR) spectroscopy. Addition Of 100% CO2 to a solution of Fc in [C(2)mim][NTf2] resulted in a substantial increase in both the limiting oxidative current and diffusion coefficient of Fc. Arrhenius plots of Fc diffusion coefficients in the pure and CO2-saturated ionic liquid revealed a decrease in activation energy of translational diffusion from 29.0 (+/- 0.5) kJ mol(-1) to 14.7 (+/- 1.6) kJ mol(-1), suggesting a reduction in the viscosity of the ionic liquid with addition Of CO2. ESR spectroscopy was then used to calculate the rotational correlation coefficients of a probe molecule, 2,2,6,6-tetramethyl-1-piperinyloxyl (TEMPO), to add supporting evidence to this hypothesis. Arrhenius plots of rotational correlation coefficients in the pure and CO2-saturated ionic liquid resulted in a similar drop in activation energy from 28.7 (+/- 2.1) kJ mol(-1) to 18.2 (+/- 5.6) kJ mol(-1). The effect of this solute on the ionic liquid [C(2)mim][NTf2] and on the electrochemical measurements of the Fc/Fc(+) couple emphasizes the necessity of fastidious sample preparation, as it is clear that the voltammetric currents of the electroactive species under study are influenced by the presence of CO2 in solution. The voltammetric response of the electroactive species in RTILs cannot be assumed to be independent of other solutes.

The effect of water content on room-temperature ionic liquids (RTILs) was studied by Karl Fischer titration and cyclic voltammetry in the following ionic liquids: tris(P-hexyl)tetradecylphosphonium trifluorotris(pentafluoroethyl)phosphate [P-14,P-6,P-6,P-6][NTf2], N-butyl-N-methyl-pyrrolidinium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide [C(4)mpyrr][NTf2], 1-hexyl-3-methylimidazolium tris(perfluoroethyl)trifluorophosphate [C(6)mim][FAP], 1-butyl3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide [C(4)mim][NTf2], 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide [C(4)dmim][NTf2], N-hexyltriethylammonium bis(trifluoromethylsolfonyl)imide [N-6,N-2,N-2,N-2][NTf2], 1-butyl-3-methylirnidazolium hexafluorophosphate [C(4)mim][PF6], F6], 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide [C(2)mim][NTf2], 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate [C(4)mim][BF4], 1-hexyl-3-methylimidazolium iodide [C(4)mim][I], 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium trifluoromethylsulfonate [C(4)mim][OTf], and 1-hexyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride [C(6)mim][Cl]. In addition, electrochemically relevant properties such as viscosity, conductivity, density, and melting point of RTILs are summarized from previous literature and are discussed. Karl Fisher titrations were carried out to determine the water content of RTILs for vacuum-dried, atmospheric, and wet samples. The anion in particular was found to affect the level of water uptake. The hydrophobicity of the anions adhered to the following trend: [FAP](-) > [NTf2](-) > [PF6](-) > [BF4](-) > halides. Cyclic voltammetry shows that an increase in water content significantly narrows the electrochemical window of each ionic liquid. The electrochemical window decreases in the following order: vacuum-dried > atmospheric > wet at 298 K > 318 K > 338 K. The anodic and cathodic potentials vs ferrocene internal reference are also listed under vacuum-dried and atmospheric conditions. The data obtained may aid the selection of a RTIL for use as a solvent in electrochemical applications.

Ionic liquids are organic salts with low melting points. Many of these compounds are liquid at room temperature in their pure state. Since they have negligible vapor pressure and would not contribute to air pollution, they are being intensively investigated for a variety of applications, including as solvents for reactions and separations, as non-volatile electrolytes, and as heat transfer fluids. We present melting temperatures, glass transition temperatures, decomposition temperatures, heat capacities, and viscosities for a large series of pyridinium-based ionic liquids. For comparison, we include data for several imidazolium and quaternary ammonium salts. Many of the compounds do not crystallize, but form glasses at temperatures between 188 K and 223 K. The thermal stability is largely determined by the coordinating ability of the anion, with ionic liquids made with the least coordinating anions, like bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide, having the best thermal stability. In particular, dimethylaminopyridinium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide salts have some of the best thermal stabilities of any ionic liquid compounds investigated to date. Heat capacities increase approximately linearly with increasing molar mass, which corresponds with increasing numbers of translational, vibrational, and rotational modes. Viscosities generally increase with increasing number and length of alkyl substituents on the cation, with the pyridinium salts typically being slightly more viscous than the equivalent imidazolium compounds. A range of new alkylpyridinium and imidazolium carborane salts with [nido-C2B9H12](-), [closo-CB11H12](-), and [RC2B11H11](-) (R = methyl or butyl) anions have been prepared and characterized by physical and thermal methods, including the solid state structures of five of the salts determined by single crystal X-ray diffraction. The tendency of the salts to form low-melting ionic liquids has been assessed; all the salts studied with [nido-C2B9H12](-) anions melted below 100 degrees C and, significantly, have melting points that are 25-85 degrees C lower than those of the corresponding [closo-CB11H12](-) analogs, demonstrating that a wider range of boron-rich ionic liquid materials can be readily accessed.

Extraction of dibenzothiophene from dodecane using ionic liquids as the extracting phase has been investigated for a range of ionic liquids with varying cation classes (imidazolium, pyridinium, and pyrrolidinium) and a range of anion types using liquid-liquid partition studies and QSPR (quantitative structure-activity relationship) analysis. The partition ratio of dibenzothiophene to the ionic liquids showed a clear variation with cation class (dimethylpyridinium > methylpyridinium > pyridinium approximate to imidazolium approximate to pyrrolidinium), with much less significant variation with anion type. Polyaromatic quinolinium-based ionic liquids showed even greater extraction potential, but were compromised by higher melting points. For example, 1-butyl-6-methylquinolinium bis{(trifluoromethyl)sulfonyl} amide (mp 47 degrees C) extracted 90% of the available dibenzothiophene from dodecane at 60 degrees C.

The interactions of ions in the solid state for a series of representative 1,3-dialkylimidazolium hexafluorophosphate salts (either ionic liquids or closely related) have been examined by crystallographic analysis, combined with the theoretical estimation of crystal-packing densities and lattice-interaction energies. Efficient close-packing of the ions in the crystalline states is observed, but there was no compelling evidence for specific directional hydrogen-bonding to the hexafluorophosphate anions or the formation of interstitial voids. The close-packing efficiency is supported by the theoretical calculation of ion volumes, crystal lattice energies, and packing densities, which correlated well with experimental data. The crystal density of the salts can be predicted accurately from the summation of free ion volumes and lattice energies calculated. Of even more importance for future work, on these and related salts, the solid-state density of 1,3-dialkylimidazolium hexafluorophosphate salts can be predicted with reasonable accuracy purely on the basis of on ab initio free ion volumes, and this allows prediction of lattice energies without necessarily requiring the crystal structures.
