Inkjet printing is proposed as a means to create the resistively loaded elements of a frequency selective surface (FSS) which suppresses radar backscatter when placed above a metal ground plane. Spectral transmission and reflection measurements from 9 to 18 GHz show that the dot density of the printed features and the volume ratio of an aqueous vehicle and nano-silver (Ag) ink mixture can be selected to obtain surface resistances in the range 1.2-200 Ω/sq.

Purpose: The canonical Wnt signaling is activated by retinal injury. Under disease conditions, the Wnt mediates inflammatory responses. Inflammation has been detected in age-related macular degeneration (AMD) retinas and Ccl2-/-/Cx3cr1-/- (DKO) mice with or without rd8 background, a model with progressive AMD-like lesions including focal photoreceptor/RPE degeneration and A2E accumulation. We evaluated the effects of Wnt-β-catenin activation and an antibody against LRP6, the co-receptor of Wnt on these two models.

Methods: anti-LRP6 antibody (2F1, 1 μl of 5 μg/μL) was intravitreally injected into the right eyes in 3 separate experiments (DKOrd8, N=35; DKO, N=10). The left eyes were injected with mouse IgG as controls. Fundoscopy was taken before injection and sequentially monthly after injection. Two months after injection, light-adapted ERG responses were recorded; then the eyes were harvested for histopathology, the determination of retinal A2E, and molecular analysis. The microarray of ocular mRNA of 92 Wnt genes was compared between the treated and the control eyes. The phosphorylated types of LRP6 and β-catenin and endogenous forms of the proteins were assayed by Western blotting.

Results: For DKOrd8 mice, the fundus showed a slower progression or alleviation of retinal lesions in the right eyes as compared to the left eyes. Among 35 pairs of eyes, 26 (74.3%) were improved, 7 (20%) stayed the same and 2 (5.7%) remained progressing. Histology confirmed the clinical observation. Light-adapted ERG of the treated eyes exhibited larger amplitudes compared to control eyes (n=6), with greater improvements under UV light stimulus. There was a significantly lower A2E in the treated eyes compared to controls. Microarray of 92 Wnt genes expression pattern was similar in both eyes. Western blotting indicated local administration of 2F1 antibody to suppress the activation of Wnt pathway in the retina. For DKO mice, the treatment improved ERG but less effect on RPE degeneration.

Conclusions: The canonical Wnt signaling plays a role in the focal retina lesion of both DKOrd8 and DKO mice; and intravitreal anti-LRP6 antibody might be neuroprotective via deactivation of canonical Wnt pathway.

The discovery of two superluminous supernovae at large distances from Earth pushes the frontier of supernova studies to just 1.5 billion years after the Big Bang, and suggests that they may be common in the young Universe. See Letter p.228

Thermal reactions proceed optimally when they are rapidly heated to the highest tolerable temperature, held there for the shortest possible time and then quenched. This is explained through assessments of reaction kinetics in literature examples and models. Although presently available microwave equipment is better suited to rapid heating than resistance-heated systems, the findings do not depend upon the method of heating. Claims that microwave heated reactions proceed faster and more cleanly than their conventionally heated counterparts are valid only when comparably rapid heating and cooling cannot be obtained by conventional heating. These findings suggest that rigid adherence to the sixth principle of green chemistry, relating to the use of ambient temperature and pressure, may not always afford optimal results. © 2010 The Royal Society of Chemistry.

Recent analyses of sediment samples from "black mat" sites in South America and Europe support previous interpretations of an ET impact event that reversed the Late Glacial demise of LGM ice during the Bølling Allerød warming, resulting in a resurgence of ice termed the Younger Dryas (YD) cooling episode. The breakup or impact of a cosmic vehicle at the YD boundary coincides with the onset of a 1-kyr long interval of glacial resurgence, one of the most studied events of the Late Pleistocene. New analytical databases reveal a corpus of data indicating that the cosmic impact was a real event, most possibly a cosmic airburst from Earth's encounter with the Taurid Complex comet or unknown asteroid, an event that led to cosmic fragments exploding interhemispherically over widely dispersed areas, including the northern Andes of Venezuela and the Alps on the Italian/French frontier. While the databases in the two areas differ somewhat, the overall interpretation is that microtextural evidence in weathering rinds and in sands of associated paleosols and glaciofluvial deposits carry undeniable attributes of melted glassy carbon and Fe spherules, planar deformation features, shock-melted and contorted quartz, occasional transition and platinum metals, and brecciated and impacted minerals of diverse lithologies. In concert with other black mat localities in the Western USA, the Netherlands, coastal France, Syria, Central Asia, Peru, Argentina and Mexico, it appears that a widespread cosmic impact by an asteroid or comet is responsible for deposition of the black mat at the onset of the YD glacial event. Whether or not the impact caused a 1-kyr interval of glacial climate depends upon whether or not the Earth had multiple centuries-long episodic encounters with the Taurid Complex or asteroid remnants; impact-related changes in microclimates sustained climatic forcing sufficient to maintain positive mass balances in the reformed ice; and/or inertia in the Atlantic thermohaline circulation system persisted for 1kyr.

This study evaluated the effect of an industrial scale continuous flow microwave volumetric heating system in comparison to conventional commercial scale pasteurisation for the processing of tomato juice in terms of physicochemical properties, microbial characteristics and antioxidant capacity. The effect against oxidative stress in Caco-2 cells, after in vitro digestion was also investigated. Physicochemical and colour characteristics of juices were very similar between technologies and during storage. Both conventional and microwave pasteurisation inactivated microorganisms and kept them in low levels throughout storage. ABTS+ values, but not ORAC, were higher for the microwave pasteurised juice at day 0 however no significant differences between juices were observed during storage. Juice processed with the microwave system showed an increased cytoprotective effect against H2O2 induced oxidation in Caco-2 cells. Organoleptic analysis revealed that the two tomato juices were very similar. The continuous microwave volumetric heating system appears to be a viable alternative to conventional pasteurisation.

This paper describes the design of a frequency selective surface (FSS) which provides transmission of 228 - 230 GHz radiation and rejection from 164 – 191.3 GHz with insertion losses under 0.25 dB for TE wave polarization at 45 incidence. This state-of-the art filter consists of two air spaced freestanding perforated screens, comprising unit cell elements of resonant slots folded for the purpose of miniaturisation to enhance angular stability. The reported geometry enhances the angular stability (45 ± 10) of the FSS beyond what is possible with canonical linear slots and satisfies the stringent electromagnetic performance requirements for signal demultiplexing in the quasi-optical feed train of the Microwave Sounder (MWS) instrument.

The line intensity ratio method provides a nonintrusive diagnostic for the measurement of electron temperature in microwave-generated plasmas. For optically thin plasmas of low density, a line intensity method using He I lines can often be used, and is based on the fact that the electron impact excitation rate coefficients for helium singlet and triplet states are insensitive to electron density but differ as a function of the electron temperature. Line intensity measurements are presented from microwave-generated helium plasmas. Both steady-state corona and collision-radiative theoretical models are used to evaluate the ground and excited state populations. The line ratio versus electron temperature obtained from both of these methods are compared with the results from measurements. However, it is not possible to diagnose the electron temperature from the line ratios alone due to the presence of significant opacity and nonnegligible 1s2s S-3 metastable fraction in the plasma.
