We have investigated the generation of high harmonics from the interaction of 150 fsec, 790 nm, and 395 nm laser pulses with solid targets. Experiments are presented that demonstrate a strong dependence of the conversion efficiency on the temporal pulse shape and the resulting density scale length (L/lambda) of the preformed plasma. The highest conversion efficiencies are achieved for short density scale lengths (L/lambda less than or equal to 0.4), which result from high contrast ratio pulse interactions. The generation of the third and fourth harmonics from the interaction of a 1 ps, ultraviolet (UV), krypton fluoride (KrF) laser with a solid surface is investigated. The conversion efficiency is seen to increase linearly with I lambda(2), with a transition from specular harmonic emission to emission into 2 pi steradians occurring between 10(15) and 10(16) W cm(-2) mu m(2). The diffuse emission is strongly dependent on the incidence angle of the laser, with the peak in emission at around 30 degrees being consistent with measurements for resonance absorption. Finally, the conversion efficiencies are found to be in agreement with particle-in-cell (PIC) simulations including appropriate density scalelengths. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science B.V.

We present results of experiments studying the efficiency of high harmonic generation from a gas target using the TITANIA krypton fluoride laser at the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory. The variation of harmonic yield for the 7th to 13th harmonics (355-191 Angstrom) is studied as a function of the backing pressure of a solenoid valve gas jet and of the axial position of the laser focus relative to the centre of the gas jet nozzle. Harmonic energies up to 1 mu J were produced in helium and neon targets from laser energies of approximately 200 mJ. This corresponds to absolute conversion efficiencies of up to 5 x 10(-6).

We present images of the source of extreme ultraviolet (XUV) harmonic emission at a wavelength of 220 Angstrom from the interaction of a 20 TW, 1.053 mu m Nd:glass laser beam focused to intensities up to 4x10(18) W cm(-2) onto a solid target. From these measurements we determine an upper limit to the source size and brightness of the harmonic emission to show its efficacy as a novel source of short-pulse, coherent XUV radiation. We also demonstrate the empirical scaling of the harmonic generation efficiency with irradiance up to 10(19) W mu m(2) cm(-2), and extrapolate to estimate the possible source brightness at higher irradiances. The fast ignitor scheme for inertial confinement fusion requires forward driving of the critical density surface by light pressure (hole boring) to allow energy deposition close to the dense fuel. The recession velocity of the critical density surface has been observed to be nu/c = 0.015 at an irradiance of 1.0 x 10(19) W cm(-2) at a wavelength of 1.05 micron, in quantitative agreement with modeling. We demonstrate a new high-order harmonic generation mechanism reaching the "water window" spectral region in experiments with multiterawatt femtosecond lasers irradiating gas jets. A few hundred harmonic orders are resolved, giving mu J/sr pulses. Harmonics are collectively emitted by an oscillating electron spike formed at the joint of the boundaries of a cavity and bow wave created by a relativistically self-focusing laser in underdense plasma. The spike sharpness and stability are explained by catastrophe theory. The mechanism is corroborated by particle-in-cell simulations.

The process of second harmonic generation (SHG) in undercritical plasmas is studied. It is shown that filamentation and self-focusing of the laser beam in the plasma can break the plasma density symmetry and lead to SHG by free electrons. In turn, second harmonic emission may be used to investigate the plasma parameters and to diagnose the process of laser beam filamentation itself.

Spectra of forward emitted second harmonic light from laser interaction with filamentary plasmas have been experimentally studied. Rather regular modulations in the frequency domain have been observed into overall red-shifted spectra. The observed spectral features are consistent with self-phase-modulation of the intense laser light in growing filaments. A model accounts for this effect.

A chemical legacy: Keck and his team have chemically pursued the bryostatin 1 structure with great vigor in recent years and, in late 2010, they finally completed their quest of developing a short and efficient total synthesis of this complex natural product (see structure). The present Highlight provides a brief but nevertheless detailed overview of the Keck synthesis and its chemical legacy in terms of new reactions.

In this Focus Review, we give an overview of various bryostatin total syntheses. We also discuss the synthesis of various bryostatin analogues and their biological activity. Work reviewed includes that of Masamune, Evans, Nishiyama and Yamamura, Hale and Manaviazar, Trost, Wender, Keck, Burke, Thomas, and Krische. Our coverage is primarily for the period 2001–2009, since detailed reviews already exist on bryostatin total synthesis work and biology up to this time.
