This paper presents an Invariant Information Local Sub-map Filter (IILSF) as a technique for consistent Simultaneous Localisation and Mapping (SLAM) in a large environment. It harnesses the benefits of sub-map technique to improve the consistency and efficiency of Extended Kalman Filter (EKF) based SLAM. The IILSF makes use of invariant information obtained from estimated locations of features in independent sub-maps, instead of incorporating every observation directly into the global map. Then the global map is updated at regular intervals. Applying this technique to the EKF based SLAM algorithm: (a) reduces the computational complexity of maintaining the global map estimates and (b) simplifies transformation complexities and data association ambiguities usually experienced in fusing sub-maps together. Simulation results show that the method was able to accurately fuse local map observations to generate an efficient and consistent global map, in addition to significantly reducing computational cost and data association ambiguities.

Porous titanium samples were manufactured using the 3D printing and sintering method in order to determine the effects of final sintering temperature on morphology and mechanical properties. Cylindrical samples were printed and split into groups according to a final sintering temperature (FST). Irregular geometry samples were also printed and split into groups according to their FST. The cylindrical samples were used to determine part shrinkage, in compressive tests to provide stress-strain data, in microCT scans to provide internal morphology data and for optical microscopy to determine surface morphology. All of the samples were used in microhardness testing to establish the hardness. Below 1100 C FST, shrinkage was in the region of 20% but increased to approximately 30% by a FST of 1300 C. Porosity varied from a maximum of approximately 65% at the surface to the region of 30% internally. Between 97 and 99% of the internal porosity is interconnected. Average pore size varied between 24 µm at the surface and 19 µm internally. Sample hardness increased to in excess of 300 HV0.05 with increasing FST while samples with an FST of below 1250 C produced an elastic-brittle stress/strain curve and samples above this displayed elastic-plastic behaviour. Yield strength increased significantly through the range of sintering temperatures while the Young's modulus remained fairly consistent. © 2013 Elsevier B.V.

Seepage flow under hydraulic structures provided with intermediate filters has been investigated. The flow through the banks of the canal has been included in the model. Different combinations of intermediate filter and canal width were studied. Different lengths of the floor, differential heads, and depths of the sheet pile driven beneath the floor were also investigated. The introduction of an intermediate filter to the floor of hydraulic structures reduced the uplift force acting on the downstream floor by up to 72%. The maximum uplift reduction occurred when the ratio of the distance of filter location downstream from the cutoff to the differential head was 1. Introducing a second filter in the downstream side resulted in a further reduction in the exit hydraulic gradient and in the uplift force, which reached 90%. The optimum locations of the two filters occurred when the first filter was placed just downstream of the cutoff wall and the second filter was placed nearly at the middistance between the cutoff and the end toe of the floor. The results showed significant differences between the three-dimensional (3D) and the two-dimensional (2D) analyses.

Adult and 3-week-old juvenile Fasciola hepatica were examined for the presence of the cytoskeletal protein actin. Techniques of direct fluorescence using fluorescein isothiocyanate (FITC)-phalloidin and of indirect immunofluorescence using a monoclonal anti-actin antibody (MAA) demonstrated actin in the testes, sub-tegumental and gut musculature, tegumental cell bodies and tegumental spines. In contrast, polyclonal anti-actin antibody (PAA) revealed immunostaining only in the vitellaria. Effective removal of the tegument with 1% (w/v) sodium dodecyl sulphate (SDS) was confirmed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and this enabled immunoblotting of whole fluke and tegumental fractions with and without spines. Whole fluke fractions produced three bands corresponding to molecules exhibiting relative molecular weights of 43, 28 and 15 kDa, respectively, whereas the tegumental fraction with spines revealed a single band corresponding to 15 kDa in size. The fraction without spines displayed no bands. The present study localised actin in a number of different tissue types within the liver fluke. Using MAA, three forms of actin have been identified in the whole fluke and a single one in the tegumental spines.

A 3-D coupled temperature-displacement finite element analysis is performed to study an ultrasonic consolidation process. Results show that ultrasonic wave is effective in causing deformation in aluminum foils. Ultrasonic vibration leads to an oscillating stress field. The oscillation of stress in substrate lags behind the ultrasonic vibration by about 0.1 cycle of ultrasonic wave. The upper foil, which is in contact with the substrate, has the most severe deformation. The substrate undergoes little deformation. Apparent material softening by ultrasonic wave, which is of great concern for decades, is successfully simulated. The higher the friction coefficient, the more obvious the apparent material softening effect.

Drilling of Ti6Al4V is investigated experimentally and numerically. A 3D finite element model developed based on Lagrangian approach using commercial finite element software ABAQUS/explicit. 3D complex drill geometry is included in the model. The drilling process simulations are performed at the combinations of three cutting speed and four feed rates. The effects of cutting parameters on the induced thrust force and torque are predicted by the developed model. For validation purpose, experimental trials have been performed in similar condition to the simulations. The forces and torques measured during experiment are compared to the results of the finite element analysis. The agreement of the experimental results for force and torque values with the FE results is very good. Moreover, surface roughness of the holes was measured for mapping of machining. This paper aims to describe the development of a 3D breast photography service managed by the Medical Illustration Department, in the Belfast Health and Social Care Trust, Northern Ireland. Dedicated 3D breast photography equipment was installed in Medical Illustration for 18 months. Women were referred for a variety of indications including pre- and post-surgical assessment. A dedicated 3D breast photography protocol was developed locally and this requires further refinement to allow reproducibility in other centres. There are image/data artefacts associated with this technology and special techniques are required to reduce these. Specialist software is necessary for clinicians and scientists to use 3D breast photography data in surgical planning and measurement of surgical outcome.

This work presents the possibility of optimising 3D Organised Mesoporous Silica (OMS) coated with both iron and aluminium oxides for the optimal removal of As(III) and As(V) from synthetic contaminated water. The materials developed were fully characterised and were tested for removing arsenic in batch experiments. The effect of total Al to Fe oxides coating on the selective removal of As(III) and As(V) was studied. It was shown that 8% metal coating was the optimal configuration for the coated OMS materials in removing arsenic. The effect of arsenic initial concentration and pH, kinetics and diffusion mechanisms was studied, modelled and discussed. It was shown that the advantage of an organised material over an un-structured sorbent was very limited in terms of kinetic and diffusion under the experimental conditions. It was shown that physisorption was the main adsorption process involved in As removal by the coated OMS. Maximum adsorption capacity of 55 mg As(V).g-1 was noticed at pH 5 for material coated with 8% Al oxides while 35 mg As(V).g-1 was removed at pH 4 for equivalent material coated with Fe oxides.

Ambisonics and Higher Order Ambisonics (HOA) are scalable spatial audio techniques that attempt to present a sound scene to listeners over as large an area as possible. A localisation experiment was carried out to investigate the performance of a first and third order system at three listening positions - one in the centre and two off-centre - using a 5 m radius loudspeaker array. The results are briefly presented and compared to those of an earlier experiment on a 2.2 m loudspeaker array. In both experiments the off-centre listeners were placed such that the ratio of distance from the centre to the array radius was constant in both experiments. The test used a reverse target-pointer adjustment method to determine the error, both signed and absolute, for each combination of listening position and system. The results for both arrays were found to be very similar, suggesting that the relative amplitude of the loudspeakers, which were the same in both cases, was more dominant for localisation than the arrival time differences, which differed between array sizes.
