We present the first calculation of fine-structure photoionization cross sections for the ground state of singly ionized Fe. These large-scale ab initio calculations, limited to the near-threshold region, were performed in the close-coupling approximation using a Dirac–Coulomb R -matrix method implemented within a modified version of the DARC package. Our calculated cross sections reproduce in detail the resonance structures observed in previous experimental determinations.

We report on a nonperturbative R-matrix with PseudoStates (RMPS) calculation for the electron-impact ionization cross section of the ground state of Al2+. We include both the direct ionization of the 3s and 2p subshells and the indirect ionization from the 2p subshell. This calculation, thus, includes extra decay channels for the indirect-ionization process not included in previous RMPS calculations. This lowers the total-ionization cross section, resulting in closer agreement with the most recent experimental measurements. This calculation also shows better agreement with the position and height of the resonant-excitation double autoionization features seen in the experiment.

Perturbative distorted-wave and non-perturbative close-coupling methods are used to calculate electron-impact ionization cross sections for the ground state of the neutral Al atom. Configuration-average distorted-wave calculations are made for both direct ionization and excitation-autoionization contributions. The total perturbative results are found to be almost a factor of 2 higher than experiment over a wide energy range. On the other hand, the R-matrix with pseudo-states results for total ionization are found to be in good agreement with experiment. Comparison of time-dependent close-coupling calculations for the direct ionization with the R-matrix with pseudo-state calculations for total ionization reveals that both the direct ionization and excitation-autoionization contributions are strongly affected by correlation effects.

Time-dependent close-coupling (TDCC), R-matrix-with-pseudostates (RMPS), and time-independent distorted-wave (TIDW) methods are used to calculate electron-impact ionization cross sections for the carbon atom. The TDCC and RMPS results for the 1s22s22p2 ground configuration are in reasonable agreement with the available experimental measurements, while the TIDW results are 30% higher. Ionization of the 1s22s2p3 excited configuration is performed using the TDCC, RMPS, and TIDW methods. Ionization of the 1s22s22p3l (l=0–2) excited configurations is performed using the TDCC and TIDW methods. The ionization cross sections for the excited configurations are much larger than for the ground state. For example, the peak cross section for the 1s22s22p3p excited configuration is an order of magnitude larger than the peak cross section for the 1s22s22p2 ground configuration. The TDCC results are again found to be substantially lower than the TIDW results. The ionization cross-section results will permit the generation of more accurate, generalized collisional-radiative ionization coefficients needed for modeling moderately dense carbon plasmas.

Electron-impact ionization cross sections are calculated for the ground and metastable states of B+. Com- parisons between perturbative distorted-wave and nonperturbative close-coupling calculations find reductions in the direct ionization cross sections due to long-range electron correlation effects of approximately 10% for the ground state and approximately 15% for the metastable state. Previous crossed-beams experiments, with a metastable to ground ratio of between 50% and 90%, are found to be in reasonable agreement with metastable state close-coupling results. New crossed-beams experiments, with a metastable to ground ratio of only 9%, are found to be in reasonable agreement with ground state close-coupling results. Combined with previous work on neutral B and B2+, the nonperturbative close-coupling calculations provide accurate ionization cross sections for the study of edge plasmas in controlled fusion research.

Absolute Se photoionization cross-section measurements and Dirac-Coulomb R -matrix calculations are reported for the photon energy range 18.0 eV – 31.0 eV, which spans the ionization thresholds of the 4 S 0 3/2 ground state and the low-lying 2 D 0 3/2,5/2 and 2 P 0 1/2,3/2 metastable states. The determination of the photoionization and recombination properties of n -capture element ions is motivated by their astrophysical detection and the importance of their elemental abundances in testing theories of nucleosynthesis and stellar structure.

Absolute cross-section measurements for valence-shell photoionization of Ar + ions are reported for photon energies ranging from 27.4 eV to 60.0 eV. The data, taken by merging beams of ions and synchrotron radiation at a photon energy resolution of 10 meV, indicate that the primary ion beam was a statistically weighted mixture of the 2P o3/2 ground state and the 2P o1/2 metastable state of Ar +. Photoionization of this Cell-like ion is characterized by multiple Rydberg series of autoionizing resonances superimposed on a direct photoionization continuum. Observed resonance lineshapes indicate interference between indirect and direct photoionization channels. Resonance features are spectroscopically assigned and their energies and quantum defects are tabulated. The measurements are satisfactorily reproduced by theoretical calculations based on an intermediate coupling semi-relativistic Breit-Pauli approximation.

Effective collision strengths for the 10 astrophysically important fine-structure forbidden transitions among the 4So, 2Do and 2Po levels in the 3s23p3 configuration of Cl III are presented. The calculation employs the multichannel R-matrix method to compute the electron-impact excitation collision strengths in a close-coupling expansion, which incorporates the lowest 23 LS target eigenstates of Cl III. These states are formed from the 3s23p3, 3s3p4, 3s23p23d and 3s23p24s configurations. The Maxwellian-averaged effective collision strengths are presented graphically for all 10 fine-structure transitions over a wide range of electron temperatures appropriate for astrophysical applications [log T(K) = 3.3 - log T(K) = 5.9]. Comparisons are made with the earlier seven-state close-coupling calculation of Butler & Zeippen, and in general excellent agreement is found in the low-temperature region where a comparison is possible [log T(K) = 3.3 - log T(K) = 4.7]. However, discrepancies of up to 30 per cent are found to occur for the forbidden transitions which involve the 4So ground state level, particularly for the lowest temperatures considered. At the higher temperatures, the present data are the only reliable results currently available.

Nonclassicality is a key ingredient for quantum enhanced technologies and experiments involving macro- scopic quantum coherence. Considering various exactly-solvable quantum-oscillator systems, we address the role played by the anharmonicity of their potential in the establishment of nonclassical features. Specifically, we show that a monotonic relation exists between the the entropic nonlinearity of the considered potentials and their ground state nonclassicality, as quantified by the negativity of the Wigner function. In addition, in order to clarify the role of squeezing--which is not captured by the negativity of the Wigner function--we focus on the Glauber-Sudarshan P-function and address the nonclassicality/nonlinearity relation using the entanglement potential. Finally, we consider the case of a generic sixth-order potential confirming the idea that nonlinearity is a resource for the generation of nonclassicality and may serve as a guideline for the engineering of quantum oscillators.
