Background
Endocrine disrupting chemicals and carcinogens, some of which may not yet have been classified as such, are present in many occupational environments and could increase breast cancer risk. Prior research has identified associations with breast cancer and work in agricultural and industrial settings. The purpose of this study was to further characterize possible links between breast cancer risk and occupation, particularly in farming and manufacturing, as well as to examine the impacts of early agricultural exposures, and exposure effects that are specific to the endocrine receptor status of tumours.
Methods
1005 breast cancer cases referred by a regional cancer center and 1147 randomly-selected community controls provided detailed data including occupational and reproductive histories. All reported jobs were industry- and occupation-coded for the construction of cumulative exposure metrics representing likely exposure to carcinogens and endocrine disruptors. In a frequency-matched case?control design, exposure effects were estimated using conditional logistic regression.
Results
Across all sectors, women in jobs with potentially high exposures to carcinogens and endocrine disruptors had elevated breast cancer risk (OR = 1.42; 95% CI, 1.18-1.73, for 10 years exposure duration). Specific sectors with elevated risk included: agriculture (OR = 1.36; 95% CI, 1.01-1.82); bars-gambling (OR = 2.28; 95% CI, 0.94-5.53); automotive plastics manufacturing (OR = 2.68; 95% CI, 1.47-4.88), food canning (OR = 2.35; 95% CI, 1.00-5.53), and metalworking (OR = 1.73; 95% CI, 1.02-2.92). Estrogen receptor status of tumors with elevated risk differed by occupational grouping. Premenopausal breast cancer risk was highest for automotive plastics (OR = 4.76; 95% CI, 1.58-14.4) and food canning (OR = 5.70; 95% CI, 1.03-31.5).
Conclusions
These observations support hypotheses linking breast cancer risk and exposures likely to include carcinogens and endocrine disruptors, and demonstrate the value of detailed work histories in environmental and occupational epidemiology.

In recent years, several phenomenological dynamical models have been formulated that describe how perceptual variables are incorporated in the control of motor variables. We call these short-route models as they do not address how perception-action patterns might be constrained by the dynamical properties of the sensory, neural and musculoskeletal subsystems of the human action system. As an alternative, we advocate a long-route modelling approach in which the dynamics of these subsystems are explicitly addressed and integrated to reproduce interceptive actions. The approach is exemplified through a discussion of a recently developed model for interceptive actions consisting of a neural network architecture for the online generation of motor outflow commands, based on time-to-contact information and information about the relative positions and velocities of hand and ball. This network is shown to be consistent with both behavioural and neurophysiological data. Finally, some problems are discussed with regard to the question of how the motor outflow commands (i.e. the intended movement) might be modulated in view of the musculoskeletal dynamics.

Dimethyl ether (DME) is amongst one of the most promising alternative, renewable and clean fuels being considered as a future energy carrier. In this study, the comparative catalytic performance of γ-Al2O3 prepared from two common precursors (aluminum nitrate (AN) and aluminum chloride (AC)) is presented. The impact of calcination temperature was evaluated in order to optimize both the precursor and pre-treatment conditions for the production of DME from methanol in a fixed bed reactor. The catalysts were characterized by TGA, XRD, BET and TPD-pyridine. Under reaction conditions where the temperature ranged from 180 °C to 300 °C with a WHSV = 12.1 h−1 it was found that all the catalysts prepared from AN(η-Al2O3) showed higher activity, at all calcination temperatures, than those prepared from AC(γ-Al2O3). In this study the optimum catalyst was produced from AN and calcined at 550 °C. This catalyst showed a high degree of stability and had double the activity of the commercial γ-Al2O3 or 87% of the activity of commercial ZSM-5(80) at 250 °C.

Activation of methane with a halogen followed by the metathesis of methyl halide is a novel route from methane to higher hydrocarbons or oxygenates. Thermodynamic analysis revealed that bromine is the most suitable halogen for this goal. Analysis of the published data on the reaction kinetics in a CSTR enabled us to judge on the effects of temperature, reactor residence time and the feed concentrations of bromine and methane to the conversion of methane and the selectivity towards mono or dibromomethane. The analysis indicated that high dibromomethane selectivity is attainable (over 90%) accompanied by high methane conversions. The metathesis of dibromomethane can provide an alternative route to the conversion of methane (natural gas) economically with smaller installations than the current syn-gas route. A series of iron containing zeolites with varying Si/Al ratios (11.5-140) and low iron content (similar to 0.9 wt.% Fe) have been synthesised by solid-state ion exchange with commercially available zeolites and tested, for the first time, in the oxidative dehydrogenation of propane (ODHP) with N2O. The samples were characterised by XRD, N-2-Adsorption, NH3-TPD and DR-UV-vis spectroscopy. The acidity of the Fe-ZSM-5 can be controlled by high temperature and steam treatments and Si/Al ratio. The selectivity and yield of propene were found to be the highest over Fe-ZSM-5 with low Al contents and reduced acidity. The initial propene yield over Fe-ZSM-5 was significantly higher than that of Fe-SiO2 since the presence of weak and/or medium acid sites together with oligonuclear iron species and iron oxides on the ZSM-5 are found to enhance the N2O activation. The coking of Fe-ZSM-5 catalysts could also be controlled by reduction of the surface acidity of ZSM-5 and by the use of O-2 in addition to N2O as the oxidant. Fe-ZSM-5 zeolites prepared with solid-state method have been shown to have comparable activity and better stability towards coking compared with Fe-ZSM-5 zeolites prepared by liquid ion exchange and hydrothermal synthesis methods. Objectives To compare risk of fatal injury in elderly road users (drivers, passengers, pedestrians) with that of younger age groups and to assess the contribution of elderly road users to the number of reported fatalities in the population. Design Fatality age was categorized as 21 to 29, 30 to 39, 40 to 49, 50 to 59, 60 to 69, or 70 and older, and road user was categorized as driver, passenger, or pedestrian. Estimated number of trips made by each age group was used to adjust for exposure and to measure individual risk. Setting Fatalities recorded in Britain between 1989 and 2009. Participants Population-wide fatal injury counts in Britain. Measurements Age of fatally injured drivers, passengers, and pedestrians. Estimated number of trips made per year by drivers, passengers, and pedestrians. Results Risk of fatal injury, but not fatality numbers in the population, were higher for older adult (=70) drivers than for younger age groups. Risk of fatal injury was also high for older adult passengers and pedestrians, who represented the majority of older adult fatalities. Conclusion Previous emphasis on driver impairment in older age has unduly focussed attention on elderly drivers, who represent a minority of all driver fatalities. Older adults represent a much larger proportion of passenger and pedestrian fatalities. Additional policy schemes and initiatives should be targeted at safeguarding older adult passengers and making the road environment safer for elderly pedestrians. © 2012, Copyright the Authors Journal compilation © 2012, The American Geriatrics Society.

This paper reports both the binary and ternary phase behavior of ionic liquids for extracting cyclohexanecarboxylic acid (CCA) from dodecane. This system is a model for the extraction of acids representative of naphthenic acids found in crude oils. In order to develop an effective ternary liquid-liquid extraction system the preliminary selection of ionic liquids was based on CCA miscibility and the dodecane immiscibility with selected ILs. A wide range of ILs based on different cations, anions, cation alkyl-chain length, as well as the effect of temperature on the overall fluid phase behavior is reported. Factors such as variation of cation group, anion effect, alkyl-chain length, and temperature all impact the extraction to various degrees. The largest effects were found to be the lipophilicity of the IL cation and the co-ordination ability of the anion. While CCA capacity increased with lipophilicity of the cation, as did the dodecane. Highly coordinating anions such as trifluoroacetate and triflate demonstrated that highly efficient extraction could be obtained producing favorable tie-lines in the ternary phase diagram. Overall, this study demonstrates that ILs can selectively extract acids from hydrocarbon streams and offers possible treatment solutions for problems associated with the processing of high acid crude oils.

We report a series of 706 patients (759 hip implants) with an average follow up of 10.5 years (range, 10-11 years) following total hip replacement (THR) using a cemented custom-made femoral stem and a cemented HDP acetabular component. The fate of every implant is known. One hundred and seventy-four patients (23%) were deceased at the time of their 10-year review all died with a functioning THR in situ. Four hundred and sixty-two patients (61%) were subsequently reviewed. One hundred and twenty three patients (16%) were assessed by telephone review, as they were too ill or unwilling to attend. Kaplan-Meier survival analysis (all components) demonstrated a median survival at 10 years of 96.05% or 95% Confidence Intervals (CI) for median survival of (94.41% to 97.22%). Revision surgery occurred in 30 cases (3.9%). Seventeen had full revisions (2.2%) and 13 (1.7%) socket revisions only. Twenty-one out of 30 revisions were for infection or dislocation. There were 2 cases (0.3%) of revision for aseptic loosening of the stem. The 10-year results of the custom femoral titanium stem are encouraging and compare well with other cemented systems.

Core-collapse supernovae (SNe) are the spectacular finale to massive stellar evolution. In this Letter, we identify a progenitor for the nearby core-collapse SN 2012aw in both ground based near-infrared, and space based optical pre-explosion imaging. The SN itself appears to be a normal Type II Plateau event, reaching a bolometric luminosity of 10$^{42}$ erg s$^{-1}$ and photospheric velocities of $\sim$11,000 \kms\ from the position of the H$\beta$ P-Cygni minimum in the early SN spectra. We use an adaptive optics image to show that the SN is coincident to within 27 mas with a faint, red source in pre-explosion HST+WFPC2, VLT+ISAAC and NTT+SOFI images. The source has magnitudes $F555W$=26.70$\pm$0.06, $F814W$=23.39$\pm$0.02, $J$=21.1$\pm$0.2, $K$=19.1$\pm$0.4, which when compared to a grid of stellar models best matches a red supergiant. Interestingly, the spectral energy distribution of the progenitor also implies an extinction of $A_V>$1.2 mag, whereas the SN itself does not appear to be significantly extinguished. We interpret this as evidence for the destruction of dust in the SN explosion. The progenitor candidate has a luminosity between 5.0 and 5.6 log L/\lsun, corresponding to a ZAMS mass between 14 and 26 \msun\ (depending on $A_V$), which would make this one of the most massive progenitors found for a core-collapse SN to date.

CO and C3H6 oxidation have been carried out in the absence and presence of water over a Pd/Al2O3catalyst. It is clear that water promotes CO and, as a consequence, C3H6oxidation takes place at muchlower temperatures compared with the dry feed. The significant increase in the catalyst’s activity withrespect to CO oxidation is not simply associated with changes in surface concentration as a result ofcompetitive adsorption effects. Utilising18O2as the reactant allows the pathways whereby the oxidationdue to gaseous dioxygen and where the water activates the CO and C3H6to be distinguished. In thepresence of water, the predominant pathway is via water activation with C16O2and C16O18O being themajor species formed and oxidation with dioxygen plays a secondary role. The importance of wateractivation is further supported by the significant decrease in its effect when using D2O versus H2O.

African coastal regions are expected to experience the highest rates of population growth in coming decades. Fresh groundwater resources in the coastal zone of East Africa (EA) are highly vulnerable to seawater intrusion. Increasing water demand is leading to unsustainable and ill-planned well drilling and abstraction. Wells supplying domestic, industrial and agricultural needs are or have become, in many areas, too saline for use. Climate change, including weather changes and sea level rise, is expected to exacerbate this problem. The multiplicity of physical, demographic and socio-economic driving factors makes this a very challenging issue for management. At present the state and probable evolution of coastal aquifers in EA are not well documented. The UPGro project 'Towards groundwater security in coastal East Africa' brings together teams from Kenya, Tanzania, Comoros Islands and Europe to address this knowledge gap. An integrative multidisciplinary approach, combining the expertise of hydrogeologists, hydrologists and social scientists, is investigating selected sites along the coastal zone in each country. Hydrogeologic observatories have been established in different geologic and climatic settings representative of the coastal EA region, where focussed research will identify the current status of groundwater and identify future threats based on projected demographic and climate change scenarios. Researchers are also engaging with end users as well as local community and stakeholder groups in each area in order to understanding the issues most affecting the communities and searching sustainable strategies for addressing these.

We undertake a detailed study of the sets of multiplicity in a second countable locally compact group G and their operator versions. We establish a symbolic calculus for normal completely bounded maps from the space B(L-2(G)) of bounded linear operators on L-2 (G) into the von Neumann algebra VN(G) of G and use it to show that a closed subset E subset of G is a set of multiplicity if and only if the set E* = {(s,t) is an element of G x G : ts(-1) is an element of E} is a set of operator multiplicity. Analogous results are established for M-1-sets and M-0-sets. We show that the property of being a set of multiplicity is preserved under various operations, including taking direct products, and establish an Inverse Image Theorem for such sets. We characterise the sets of finite width that are also sets of operator multiplicity, and show that every compact operator supported on a set of finite width can be approximated by sums of rank one operators supported on the same set. We show that, if G satisfies a mild approximation condition, pointwise multiplication by a given measurable function psi : G -> C defines a closable multiplier on the reduced C*-algebra G(r)*(G) of G if and only if Schur multiplication by the function N(psi): G x G -> C, given by N(psi)(s, t) = psi(ts(-1)), is a closable operator when viewed as a densely defined linear map on the space of compact operators on L-2(G). Similar results are obtained for multipliers on VN(C).

This paper describes a novel doped titania immobilised thin film multi tubular photoreactor which has been developed for use with liquid, vapour or gas phase media. In designing photocatalytic reactors measuring active surface area of photocatalyst within the unit is one of the critical design parameters. This dictate greatly limits the applicability of any semi-conductor photocatalyst in industrial applications, as a large surface area equates to a powder catalyst. This demonstration of a thin film coating, doped with a rare earth element, novel photoreactor design produces a photocatalytic degradation of a model pollutant (methyl orange) which displayed a comparable degradation achieved with P25 TiO2. The use of lanthanide doping is reported here in the titania sol gel as it is thought to increase the electron hole separation therefore widening the potential useful wavelengths within the electromagnetic spectrum. Increasing doping from 0.5% to 1.0% increased photocatalytic degradation by ∼17% under visible irradiation. A linear relationship has been seen between increasing reactor volume and degradation which would not normally be observed in a typical suspended reactor system. © 2012 Elsevier B.V.
