Ionic liquids are often contaminated by colored impurities. These impurities can be problematic for spectroscopic studies or for monitoring organic reactions by UV/Vis spectroscopy. The effect of different purification methods on the optical quality of colored ionic liquids was studied and compared. Yellowish ionic liquids can partially be decolorized by treatment with active charcoal or by recrystallization. Our experiments show column liquid chromatography is not always a good technique to prepare spectrograde imidazolium halide ionic liquids. Colorless and UV-transparent ionic liquids were synthesized by a method that can exclude the need for further purification steps. (c) 2005 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Organic light emitting diode devices employing organometallic Nd(9-hydroxyphenalen-1-one)(3) complexes as near infrared emissive dopants dispersed within poly(N-vinylcarbazole) (PVK) host matrices have been fabricated by spin-casting layers of the doped polymer onto glass/indium tin oxide (ITO)/3,4-polyethylene-dioxythiophene-polystyrene sulfonate (PEDOT) substrates. Room temperature electroluminescence, centered at similar to 1065 nm. was observed from devices top contacted by evaporated aluminum or calcium metal cathodes and was assigned to transitions between the F-4(3/2) -> I-4(11/2) levels of the Nd3+ ions. In particular, a near infrared irradiance of 8.5 nW/mm(2) and an external quantum efficiency of 0.007% was achieved using glass/ITO/PEDOT/PVK:Nd(9-hydroxyphenalen-1-one)(3)/Ca/Al devices. Narrow bandwidth red electroluminescence from OLED devices fabricated using a simple solution-based approach is demonstrated. A spin-casting method is employed to fabricate organic light emitting diode (OLED) devices comprising a poly(N-vinylcarbazole) (PVK) host matrix doped with a europium beta-diketonate complex, Eu(dbM)(3)(Phen) (dibenzoylmethanate, dbm; 1,10-phenanthroline, Phen) on glass/ indium tin oxide (ITO)/3,4-polyethylene-dioxythiophene-polystyrene sulfonate (PEDOT) substrates. Saturated red europium ion emission, based on the (5)Do ->F-7(2) transition, is centered at a wavelength of 612 nm with a full width at half maximum of 3.5 rim. A maximum external quantum efficiency of 6.3 x 10(-2) cd/A (3.1 X 10(-2)%) and a maximum luminance of 130 cd/M-2 at 400 mA/cm(2) and 25 V is measured for ITO/PEDOT/PVK:Eu(dbM)3(Phen)/Ca/Al devices. This measured output luminance is comparable to that of devices fabricated using more sophisticated small molecule evaporation techniques. (c) 2005 Elsevier B.V All rights reserved.

Anhydrous neodymium(III) iodide and erbium(Ill) iodide were dissolved in carefully dried batches of the ionic liquid 1-dodecyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide, [C(12)mim][Tf2N]. Provided that the ionic liquid had a low water content, intense near-infrared emission could be observed for both the neodymium(III) ion and for the erbium(III) ion. Luminescence lifetimes have been measured, and the quantum yield of the neodymium(III) sample has been measured. Exposure of the hygroscopic samples to atmospheric moisture conditions caused a rapid decrease of the luminescence intensities. (C) 2004 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

In this paper we use a zero-range potential (ZRP) method to model positron interaction with molecules. This allows us to investigate the e?ect of molecular vibrations on positron–molecule annihilation using the van der Waals dimer Kr2 as an example. We also use the ZRP to explore positron binding to polyatomics and examine the dependence of the binding energy on the size of the molecule for alkanes. We ?nd that a second bound state appears for a molecule with ten carbons, similar to recent experimental evidence for such a state emerging in alkanes with twelve carbons.

The development of cold trap-based positron beams and new scattering techniques has recently enabled the ?rst measurements of state-resolved positron-impact vibrational excitation cross sections. These measurements revealed a number of features worth further consideration, such as relatively sharp increases near threshold. This paper describes a comparison of the magnitudes and shapes of these cross sections with the predictions of the Born-dipole model. Agreement of the magnitudes of the cross sections varies widely, ranging from reasonable to excellent agreement for CO2 and CF4 to poor agreement for CO and CH4. In contrast, the energy dependence of these cross sections in all these cases is close to that predicted by the Born model.

Positron annihilation rates in many polyatomic molecular gases are anomalously high. Qualitatively, this can be explained by positron capture in vibrational Feshbach resonances, which can occur for molecules with positive positron a?nities [Gribakin, Phys. Rev. A 61 (2000) 022720]. To verify this idea quantitatively, we examine the densities of vibrational excitation spectra of alkanes. To understand the energy dependence of the annihilation rates for alkanes, we propose that positron capture is mediated by vibrational doorway states, in which positron binding is accompanied by the excitation of fundamentals.

Electroless nickel (EN) coatings are recognised for their hardness and wear resistance in automotive and aerospace industries. In this work, electroless Ni–P coatings were deposited on aluminium alloy substrate LM24 (Al–9 wt.% Si alloy) and the effect of post treatment on the wear resistance was studied. The post treatments included heat treatment and lapping with two different surface textures. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive spectrometry (EDS), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and micro-abrasion tester were used to analyse morphology, structure and abrasive wear resistance of the coatings. Post heat treatment significantly improved the coating density and structure, giving rise to enhanced hardness and wear resistance. Microhardness of electroless Ni–P coatings with thickness of about 15 μm increased due to the formation of Ni3P after heat treatment.

Communication: Coatings Of Yellow gamma-WO3 are deposited on glass by APCVD of WOCl4 and either ethanol or ethylacetate at 350-450degreesC. The yellow films show significant photoactivity for the destruction of stearic acid, and photoinduced superhydrophilicity. Preparation of blue reduced WO2.92 films from the same reaction at higher substrate temperatures of 500-600degreesC (Figure) is also found to be possible. These films show no photoactivity, but can be converted into the fully stoichiometric photoactive form simply by heating in air.
