Oligonucleotides containing a 3'-thiothymidine residue (T3's) at the cleavage site for the EcoRV restriction endonuclease (between the central T and A residues of the sequence GATATC) have been prepared on an automated DNA synthesizer using 5'-O-monomethoxytritylthymidine 3'-S-(2-cyanoethyl N,N-di-isopropylphosphorothioamidite). The self-complementary sequence GACGAT3'sATCGTC was completely resistant to cleavage by EcoRV, while the heteroduplex composed of 5'-TCTGAT3'sATCCTC and 5'-GAGGATATCAGA (duplex 4) was cleaved only in the unmodified strand (5'-GAGGATATCAGA). In contrast, strands containing a 3'-S-phosphorothiolate linkage could be chemically cleaved specifically at this site with Ag+. A T3's residue has also been incorporated in the (-) strand of double-stranded closed circular (RF IV) M13mp18 DNA at the cleavage site of a unique EcoRV recognition sequence by using 5'-pCGAGCTCGAT3'sATCGTAAT as a primer for polymerization on the template (+) strand of M13mp18 DNA. On treatment of this substrate with EcoRV, only one strand was cleaved to produce the RF II or nicked DNA. Taken in conjunction with the cleavage studies on the oligonucleotides, this result demonstrates that the 3'-S-phosphorothiolate linkage is resistant to scission by EcoRV. Additionally, the phosphorothiolate-containing strand of the M13mp18 DNA could be cleaved specifically at the point of modification using iodine in aqueous pyridine. The combination of enzymatic and chemical techniques provides, for the first time, a demonstrated method for the sequence-specific cleavage of either the (+) or (-) strand.

Organic aerogels were synthesized by sol–gel polymerization of resorcinol (R) with formaldehyde (F) catalyzed by sodium carbonate (C) followed by vacuum drying. The influence of the resorcinol/sodium carbonate ratio (R/C) on the porous structure of the resultant aerogels was investigated. The nitrogen adsorption–desorption measurements show that the aerogels possess a well developed porous structure and mesoporosity was found to increase with increasing the R/C ratio. Carbon aerogels were obtained by carbonization of RF aerogels. The carbonization temperature impacts the microstructure of the aerogels by pore transformations during carbonization probably due to the formation of micropores and shrinkage of the gel structure. The results showed that a temperature of 1073 Kis more effective in the development of the pore structure of the gel. Activated carbon aerogels were obtained from the CO2 activation of carbon aerogels. Activation results in an increase in the number of both micropores and mesopores, indicative of pore creation in the structure of the carbon. Activation at higher temperatures results in a higher degree of burn off and increases the pore volume and the surface area remarkably without change of the basic porous structure, pore size, and pore size distribution.

A vaginally-worn temperature telemeter may be used by women to chart their basal body temperature for ovulation detection. The telemeter uses a temperature to pulse width converter to key a Colpitts oscillator which is controlled in frequency by a 418 MHz SAW resonator. The circuit’s tank inductor acts as a compact, multi-turn loop antenna with a radiated power in isolation of around 1 uW. The transmission characteristics of the system are affected by the proximity of the human body, which acts as an electrically-large lossy dielectric. The RF link-budget must allow for the reduction in total emitted power, directional body-induced fading, and polarization effects. The polar power patterns of the telemeter were measured for both isolated and in-situ cases, using horizontal and vertical polarization. The power patterns were numerically integrated to determine relative emitted power, and a reference dipole used to determine the emitted power for the isolated device. In isolation the telemeter radiation is vertically polarized and isotropic in nature. With the telemeter in-situ, total body absorption was found to be over 20 dB, with directional fades of up to 40 dB; there was extensive cross-polarization, with up to 60% of radiated power horizontally polarized. With limited radiated power and directional fading, the operating range for the telemeter is limited to single room operation (less than 10m). The majority of RF radiation is absorbed by the body, but the radiation hazard is negligible due to the low power level of the device. The high level of cross-polarization suggests that either horizontal or vertically polarized base-station antennas may be used.

Indicator inks, previously shown to be capable of rapidly assessing photocatalytic activity via a novel photo-reductive mechanism, were simply applied via an aerosol spray onto commercially available pieces of Activ (TM) self-cleaning glass. Ink layers could be applied with high evenness of spread, with as little deviation as 5% upon UV-visible spectroscopic assessment of 25 equally distributed positions over a 10 cm x 10 cm glass cut. The inks were comprised of either a resazurin (Rz) or dichloroindophenol (DCIP) redox dye with a glycerol sacrificial electron donor in an aqueous hydroxyethyl cellulose (HEC) polymer media. The photo-reduction reaction under UVA light of a single spot was monitored by UV-vis spectroscopy and digital images attained from a flat-bed scanner in tandem for both inks. The photo-reduction of Rz ink underwent a two-step kinetic process, whereby the blue redox dye was initially reduced to a pink intermediate resorufin (Rf) and subsequently reduced to a bleached form of the dye. In contrast, a simple one-step kinetic process was observed for the reduction of the light blue redox dye DCIP to its bleached intermediates. Changes in red-green-blue colour extracted from digital images of the inks were inversely proportional to the changes seen at corresponding wavelengths via UV-visible absorption spectroscopy and wholly indicative of the reaction kinetics. The photocatalytic activity areas of cuts of Activ (TM) glass, 10 cm x 10 cm in size, were assessed using both Rz and DCIP indicator inks evenly sprayed over the films: firstly using UVA lamp light to activate the underlying Activ (TM) film (1.75 mW cm(-2)) and secondly under solar conditions (2.06 +/- 0.14 mW cm(-2)). The photo-reduction reactions were monitored solely by flat-bed digital scanning. Red-green-blue values of a generated 14 x 14 grid (196 positions) that covered the entire area of each film image were extracted using a Custom-built program entitled RGB Extractor(C). A homogenous degradation over the 196 positions analysed for both Rz (Red colour deviation = 19% UVA, 8% Solar: Green colour deviation = 17% UVA, 12% Solar) and DCIP (Red colour deviation = 22% UVA, 16% Solar) inks was seen in both UVA and solar experiments, demonstrating the consistency of the self-cleaning titania layer on Activ (TM). The method presented provides a good solution for the high-throughput photocatalytic screening of a number of homogenous photocatalytically active materials simultaneously or numerous positions on a single film; both useful in assessing the homogeneity of a film or determining the best combination of reaction components to produce the optimum performance photocatalytic film. This article reports the behaviour of three photocatalyst indicator inks, based on the redox dyes: methylene blue (NIB), resorufin (Rf) and 2,6-dichloroindophenol (DCIP), and assess their performance in comparison to the pioneering resazurin (Rz)-based ink for the rapid assessment of the activity of very thin, photocatalyst films, such as Activ (TM) self-cleaning glass. From a commercial 'demonstrator of photocatalysis' perspective, all three redox dyes appear more attractive compared to Rz since all generate colourless products in the ink formulation when photoreduced on Activ (TM) under anaerobic conditions, whereas, the reduced product from Rz, the redox dye resorufin, Rf. is pink in colour. However, the ink based on Rf is far too slow to effect the rapid measurement of photocatalytic activity even in the absence of oxygen, and in the presence of oxygen the latter inhibits the overall kinetics of photoreduction by re-oxidising the reduced product, dihydroresorufin, HRf, back to Rf. Similarly, despite the attractive rapid rate of photobleaching for NIB under anaerobic conditions, compared to the other redox dyes, the reduced product of the MB-based ink. leuco-MB, is so oxygen-sensitive that the ink cannot be photoreduced under aerobic conditions, thus rendering the ink unsuitable for use in the field. The DCIP-based ink is slightly less easy to photoreduce under both anaerobic and ambient atmospheric conditions compared to the Rz-based ink. However. in addition to its more attractive colour change, the DCIP-based ink is unaffected by the ambient level of oxygen present (%O-2) and the relative humidity (%RH), whereas, for the Rz-based ink, both parameters effect the photoreduction kinetics. By incorporating the DCIP ink into a felt-tipped pen, the ink is suitable for use in the laboratory and field to perform not only a qualitative test, but also to allow a semi-quantitative analysis of photocatalytic activity by eye. Neuropeptide F (NPF), RFamide and serotonin (5-HT) immunoreactivities have been detected in the nervous system of P. exiguus procercoids and adults, using an indirect immunocytochemical technique in conjunction with confocal scanning laser microscopy. The peptidergic nervous system of the procercoid is well developed, with two brain ganglia, three pairs of longitudinal nerve cords, transverse ring commissures and nerves in the suckers, all showing NPF-immunostaining. Strong NPF- and RF-immunostaining was observed in the CNS and PNS of the adult worm. The distribution patterns of the two neuropeptides were similar. Immunoreactivity for 5-HT was found only in the CNS.

A time-resolved Langmuir probe technique is used to measure the dependence of the electron density, electron temperature, plasma potential and electron energy distribution function (EEDF) on the phase of the driving voltage in a RF driven parallel plate discharge. The measurements were made in a low-frequency (100-500 kHz), symmetrically driven, radio frequency discharge operating in H-2, D-2 and Ar at gas pressures of a few hundred millitorr. The EEDFs could not be represented by a single Maxwellian distribution and resembled the time averaged EEDFs reported in 13.56 MHz discharges. The measured parameters showed structure in their spatial and temporal dependence, generally consistent with a simple oscillating sheath model. Electron temperatures of less than 0.1 eV were measured during the phase of the RF cycle when both electrodes are negative with respect to the plasma.

The Kyoto Protocol and the European Energy Performance of Buildings Directive put an onus on governments
and organisations to lower carbon footprint in order to contribute towards reducing global warming. A key
parameter to be considered in buildings towards energy and cost savings is its indoor lighting that has a major
impact on overall energy usage and Carbon Dioxide emissions. Lighting control in buildings using Passive
Infrared sensors is a reliable and well established approach; however, the use of only Passive Infrared does not
offer much savings towards reducing carbon, energy, and cost. Accurate occupancy monitoring information can
greatly affect a building’s lighting control strategy towards a greener usage. This paper presents an approach for
data fusion of Passive Infrared sensors and passive Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) based occupancy
monitoring. The idea is to have efficient, need-based, and reliable control of lighting towards a green indoor
environment, all while considering visual comfort of occupants. The proposed approach provides an estimated
13% electrical energy savings in one open-plan office of a University building in one working day. Practical
implementation of RFID gateways provide real-world occupancy profiling data to be fused with Passive
Infrared sensing towards analysis and improvement of building lighting usage and control.

Problem-solving ability was investigated in 25 DSM-IIIR schizophrenic (SC) patients using the Tower of Hanoi (TOH) task. Their performance was compared to that of: (1) 22 patients with neurosurgical unilateral prefrontal lesions, 11 left (LF) and 10 right hemisphere (RF); (2) 38 patients with unilateral temporal lobectomies, 19 left (LT) and 19 right (RT); and (3) 44 matched control subjects. Like the RT and LF group, the schizophrenics were significantly impaired on the TOH. The deficit shown by the schizophrenic group was equivalent whether or not the problems to be solved included goal-subgoal conflicts, unlike the LF group who were impaired specifically on these problems. The nature of the SC deficit was also distinct from that of the RT group, in that the problem-solving deficit remained after controlling for the effects of spatial memory performance. This study indicates, therefore, that neither focal frontal nor temporal lobe damage sustained in adult life is a sufficient explanation for the problem-solving deficits found in patients with schizophrenia. Power back-off performances of a new variant power-combining Class-E amplifier under different amplitude-modulation schemes such as continuous wave (CW), envelope elimination and restoration (EER), envelope tracking (ET) and outphasing are for the first time investigated in this study. Finite DC-feed inductances rather than massive RF chokes as used in the classic single-ended Class-E power amplifier (PA) resulted from the approximate yet effective frequency-domain circuit analysis provide the wherewithal to increase modulation bandwidth up to 80% higher than the classic single-ended Class-E PA. This increased modulation bandwidth is required for the linearity improvement in the EER/ET transmitters. The modified output load network of the power-combining Class-E amplifier adopting three-harmonic terminations technique relaxes the design specifications for the additional filtering block typically required at the output stage of the transmitter chain. Qualitative agreements between simulation and measurement results for all four schemes were achieved where the ET technique was proven superior to the other schemes. When the PA is used within the ET scheme, an increase of average drain efficiency of as high as 40% with respect to the CW excitation was obtained for a multi-carrier input signal with 12 dB peak-to-average power ratio. © 2011 The Institution of Engineering and Technology.

Artificial riboflavin receptors adapted to aqueous environments were studied for their ability to selectively extract riboflavine (Rf) from three types of beverages i.e. milk, beer and a multivitamin mixture. The basic receptor was first prepared by molecular imprinting in nonaqueous medium using a hydrogen-bond donor-acceptor-donor functional monomer (2,6-bis(acrylamido)pyridine), complementary to the imide motif of the template, riboflavin tetra-acetate as template and pentaerythritol triacrylate (PETA) as a hydrophilic cross-linking monomer. The polymer was then packed in columns and used for extraction of riboflavine from beverages. Riboflavine (Rf) was selectively removed from milk and an artificial vitamin mixture but the nonspecific binding was still significant, as judged from the binding of Rf to a control nonimprinted polymer. In order to suppress this nonspecific binding, attempts to hydrolytically hydrophilize the polymer matrix were performed. The preferred approach consisted in a controlled base hydrolysis of pendent unreacted acrylate groups, using hydroxides with differently sized counterions as reagents. This resulted in a decreased binding of Rf to both polymers, but to an equal extent implying a preferential suppression of the nonspecific contribution to the binding. The hydrophilized polymers, when subjected to beer, showed larger imprinting factors at lower phase ratios compared to the nontreated polymers and a maximum removal of 86% compared to 47% for the nonimprinted control polymer.

Experimental assessments of the modified power-combining Class-E amplifier are described. The technique used to combine the output of individual power amplifiers (PAs) into an unbalanced load without the need for bulky transformers permits the use of small RF chokes useful for the deployment in the EER transmitter. The modified output load network of the PA results in excellent 50 dBc and 46 dBc second and third-harmonic suppressions, dispensing the need for additional lossy filtering block. Operating from a 3.2 V dc supply voltage, the PA exhibits 64% drain efficiency at 24 dBm output power. Over a wide bandwidth of 350 MHz, drain efficiency of better than 60% at output power higher than 22 dBm were achieved. © 2010 IEICE Institute of Electronics Informati.

Power back-off performances of the modified power-combining Class-E amplifier under different amplitudemodulation schemes such as envelope elimination and restoration (EER) and envelope tracking (ET) are experimentally assessed in this paper. The modified output load network adopting three-harmonic terminations technique eliminates the need for additional lossy filtering section in the transmitter chain. Small dc-feed inductances rather than massive RF chokes as in the classic Class-E amplifier are used so as to increase the modulation bandwidth and therefore improve the linearity of the EER transmitter. High efficiency over a wide dynamic range using amplitude modulation through drain-voltage control (EER) was achieved and this agrees well with the Class-E theoretical prediction. When the PA was used within the ET scheme, an increase of average drain efficiency of as high as 40% with respect to the CW excitation was obtained for a multi-carrier input signal with 12dB peak-to-average power ratio. © 2011 Institut fur Mikrowellen.

This paper presents the design and characterization of ultrafast wideband low-loss single-pole single-throw (SPST) and single-pole double-throw (SPDT) differential switches. The SPDT switch exhibits insertion loss of lower than 1.25 dB from 42 to 70 GHz and isolation of better than 20 dB from 40 to 65 GHz. Similar low-loss and broadband characteristics are also observed from the measured SPST switch. The proposed switch topologies adopting current-steering technique and implemented in 0.35 µm SiGe bipolar technology result in a switching time of only 75 ps. This suggests a maximum switching speed of 13 Gbps, the fastest ever reported at V-band.
