The temporal analysis of products (TAP) technique was successfully applied for the first time to investigate the reverse water-gas shift (RWGS) reaction over a 2% Pt/CeO2 catalyst. The adsorption/desorption rate constants for CO2 and H-2 were determined in separate TAP pulse-response experiments, and the number of H-containing exchangeable species was determined using D-2 multipulse TAP experiments. This number is similar to the amount of active sites observed in previous SSITKA experiments. The CO production in the RWGS reaction was studied in a TAP experiment using separate (sequential) and simultaneous pulsing Of CO2 and H-2. A small yield of CO was observed when CO2 was pulsed alone over the reduced catalyst, whereas a much higher CO yield was observed when CO2 and H-2 were pulsed consecutively. The maximum CO yield was observed when the CO2 pulse was followed by a H-2 pulse with only a short (1 s) delay. Based on these findings, we conclude that an associative reaction mechanism dominates the RWGS reaction under these experimental conditions. The rate constants for several elementary steps can be determined from the TAP data. In addition, using a difference in the time scale of the separate reaction steps identified in the TAP experiments, it is possible to distinguish a number of possible reaction pathways. Oxidative dehydrogenation of ethane was performed under conventional microreactor and TAP reactor conditions over a Pt/Al2O3 catalyst between 100 and 600 degreesC. During TAP studies, no ethene was produced whereas under flow conditions small but significant ethene formation was observed. This is consistent with a mechanism involving the gas-phase production of ethene rather than via a surface reaction. In comparison, both hydrogen and methane formation were found under TAP conditions and the trends with temperature and surface oxide composition are interpreted in terms of successive dehydrogenation steps on the catalyst surface. It is further observed that periodic introduction of the reactants can minimize deactivation processes. (C) 2003 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

Low-energy electron diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, high-resolution electron energy-loss spectroscopy, scanning tunneling microscopy, and temperature-programmed reaction spectrometry results are reported for the structural and reactive behavior of alumina films grown on Pt(111) as a function of thickness and oxidation temperature. Submonolayer Al films undergo compete oxidation at 300 K, annealing at 1100 K resulting in formation of somewhat distorted crystalline gamma-alumina, Thicker deposits require 800 K oxidation to produce Al2O3, and these too undergo crystallization at 800 K, yielding islands of apparently undistorted gamma-alumina on the Pt(111) surface. Oxidation of a p(2 x 2) Pt3Al surface alloy occurs only at>800 K, resulting in Al extraction, These alumina films on Pt(lll) markedly increase the coverage of adsorbed SO4 resulting from SO2 chemisorption onto oxygen-precovered surfaces. This results in enhanced propane uptake and subsequent reactivity relative to SO4/Pt(111). A bifunctional mechanism is proposed to account for our observations, and the relevance of these to an understanding of the corresponding dispersed systems is discussed.

The structural, thermal, chemisorptive, and electronic properties of Ce on Pt{111} are studied by photoemission, Auger spectroscopy, scanning tunnel microscope (STM), and low-energy electron diffraction (LEED). Stranski-Krastanov-like growth of low-density Ce layers is accompanied by substantial valence charge transfer from Ce to Pt: in line with this, the measured dipole moment and polarizability of adsorbed Ce at low coverages are 7.2 x 10(-30) C m and similar to 1.3x10(-29) m(3), respectively. Pt-Ce intermixing commences at similar to 400 K and with increasing temperature a sequence of five different ordered surface alloys evolves. The symmetry, periodicities, and rotational epitaxy observed by LEED are in good accord with the STM data which reveal the true complexity of the system. The Various bimetallic surface phases are based on growth of crystalline Pt5Ce, a hexagonal layer structure consisting of alternating layers of Pt2Ce and Kagome nets of Pt atoms. This characteristic ABAB layered arrangement of the surface alloys is clearly imaged, and chemisorption data permit a distinction to be made between the more reactive Pt2Ce layer and the less reactive Pt Kagome net. Either type of layer can appear at the surface as the terminating structure, thicker films exhibiting unit mesh parameters characteristic of the bulk alloy.

The chemisorption and reactivity of SO2 on Pt{111} have been studied by HREELS, XPS, NEXAFS and temperature-programmed desorption. At 160 K SO2 adsorbs intact at high coverages, with eta(2) S-O coordination to the surface. On annealing to 270 K, NEXAFS indicates the SO2 molecular plane essentially perpendicular to the surface. Preadsorbed O-a reacts with SO2 to yield adsorbed SO4, identified as the key surface species responsible for SO2-promoted catalytic alkane oxidation. Coadsorbed CO or propene efficiently reduce SO2 overlayers to deposit S-a, and the implications of this for catalytic systems are discussed.

Electrochemically modified ethylene oxidation over a PI film supported on the Na+ ion conductor beta '' alumina has been studied over a range of conditions encompassing both promotion and poisoning, The system exhibits reversible behavior, and the data are interpreted in terms of (i) Na-enhanced oxygen chemisorption and (ii) poisoning of the surface by accumulation of Na compounds. At low Na coverages the first effect results in increased competitive adsorption of oxygen at the expense of ethylene, resulting in an increased rate, At very negative catalyst potentials (high Na coverage) both effects operate to poison the system: the increased strength of the Pt-O bond and coverage of the catalytic surface by compounds of Na strongly suppress the rate, Kinetic and spectroscopic results for ethylene oxidation over a Pt(111)-Na model catalyst shed light on important aspects of the electrochemically controlled system, Low levels of Na promote the reaction and high levels poison it, mirroring the behavior observed under electrochemical control and strongly suggesting that sodium pumped from the solid electrolyte is the key species, XP and Auger spectra show that under reaction conditions, the sodium exists as a surface carbonate. Post-reaction TPD spectra and the use of (CO)-C-13 demonstrate that CO is formed as a stable reaction intermediate, The observed activation energy (56 +/- 3 kJ/mol) is similar to that measured for CO oxidation under comparable conditions, suggesting that the rate limiting step is CO oxidation. The spontaneous oxidation of CO adsorbates on a Pt electrode modified by Ru under open circuit (OC) conditions in perchloric acid solution has been followed, for the first time, using in situ FTIR spectroscopy, and the dynamics of the surface processes taking place have been elucidated. The IR data show that adsorbed CO present on both the Ru and Pt domains and can be oxidized by the oxygen-containing adlayer on the Ru in a chemical process to produce CO under OC conditions. There is a free exchange of CO is between the Ru and Pt sites. Oxidation of CO may take place at the edges of the Ru islands, but CO is transfer, at least on the time scale of these experiments, allows the two different populations to maintain equilibrium. Oxidation is limited in this region by the rate of supply of oxygen to die surface of the catalyst. A mechanism is postulated to explain the observed behavior.

A comparative study of CO electrooxidation on different catalysts using in situ FTIR spectroscopy is presented. As electrode materials, polycrystalline Pt and Ru and a PtRu (50:50) alloy are used. The latter is one of the well-known active alloys for CO oxidation. The potential dependence of the band frequencies for the CO stretch indicates the formation of relatively compact islands at pure Pt and Ru, and a loose adlayer structure at the alloy. This loose structure has a positive effect on the rate of oxidative desorption. CO submonolayer coverages are obtained by integrating the absorption bands for CO produced upon oxidation of adsorbed CO. The band intensities measured at Pt, Ru, and PtRu indicate an influence of the substrate on the absorption coefficient of the CO stretch. It is shown that for a correct description of the catalyst properties toward CO electrooxidation, it must be distinguished between bulk and adsorbed CO. In contrast to the statement of most of the recent papers that a PtRu alloy (50:50) is the material with the highest activity for CO oxidation, it is demonstrated and rationalized in the present paper that for bulk CO oxidation pure Ru is the best catalyst. © 1999 American Chemical Society.

The electrochemical deposition of Ru on Pt(111) electrodes has been investigated by electron diffraction, Auger spectroscopy, and cyclic voltammetry in a closed UHV transfer system. At small coverages Ru formed a monatomic commensurate layer, at higher coverage mostly small islands with a bilayer height were detected. When the Pt was almost completely covered by Ru, three-dimensional clusters developed. The island structure of Ru changed upon electrooxidation of CO, reflecting an enhanced mobility of Ru. Adsorption and electrooxidation of CO have been studied on such Ru-modified Pt(111) electrodes using cyclic voltammetry and in situ FTIR spectroscopy. Compared to the pure metals, the Ru-CO bond is weakened, the Pt-CO bond strengthened on the modified electrodes. The catalytic activity of the Ru/Pt(111) electrode toward CO adlayer oxidation is higher than that of pure Ru and a PtRu alloy (50:50). It is concluded that the electrooxidation of CO takes place preferentially at the Ru islands, while CO adsorbed on Pt migrates to them. © 1999 American Chemical Society.

The structure of a Pt(111) electrode after treatment in an electrolyte and subsequent transfer to an UHV chamber was investigated ex situ by combined low energy electron diffraction (LEED), reflection high energy electron diffraction (RHEED), and Auger electron spectroscopy (AES). Treatment of the sample in a CO saturated 0.1 M HClO solution at potentials between -0.2 and 0.2 V versus Ag/AgCl caused a maximum CO coverage of about 0.75 as probed by cyclic voltammetry, which dropped by partial desorption to about 0.25 upon transfer to the UHV chamber. This adlayer exhibited a (distorted) 3×3 R30° pattern by RHEED (but not with LEED) exhibiting an average domain size of 2.3 nm at room temperature. This is identified with the same phase reported before from gas phase studies, as also corroborated by the similarities of the vibrational spectroscopic data. The same structure (albeit even more poorly ordered) was found after dissociative adsorption of methanol.

The activities of different types of PtRu catalysts for methanol oxidation are compared. Materials used were: UHV-cleaned PtRu alloys, UHV-evaporated Ru onto Pt(111) as well as adsorbed Ru on Pt(111) prepared with and without additional reduction by hydrogen. Differences in the catalytic activity are observed to depend on the preparation procedure of the catalysts. The dependence of the respective catalytic activities upon the surface composition is reported. UHV-STM data for Pt(111)/Ru show the formation of two- and three-dimensional structures depending on surface coverage. A molecular insight on the electrochemical reaction is given via in situ infrared spectroscopy. Analysis of the data indicates that the most probable rate-determining step is the reaction of adsorbed CO with Ru oxide.

The electronic and vibrational properties of CO adsorbed on Pt electrodes at different potentials have been studied, by using methods of self-consistent-charge discrete variational Xa (SCC-DV-Xa) cluster calculations and in situ FTir spectroscopy. Two new models have been developed and verified to be successful: (1) using a "metallic state cluster" to imitate a metal (electrode) surface; and (2) charging the cluster and shifting its Fermi level (e{lunate}) to simulate, according to the relation of -d e{lunate}e dE, quantitatively the variation of the electrode potential (E). It is shown that the binding of PtCO is dominated by the electric charge transfer of dp ? 2p, while that of s ? Pt is less important in this binding. The electron occupancy of the 2p orbital of CO weakens the CO bond and decreases the v. Variation of E mainly influences the charge transfer process of dp ? 2p, but hardly influences that of s ? Pt. A linear potential-dependence of v has been shown and the calculated dv/dE = 35.0 cm V. All results of calculations coincide with the ir experimental data. © 1993.

PtRuO/Ti anodes with a varying Pt:Ru ratio were prepared by thermal deposition of a PtRuO catalyst layer onto a Ti mesh for the direct methanol fuel cell (DMFC). The morphology and structure of the catalyst layers were analyzed by SEM, EDX, and XRD. The catalyst coating layers became porous with increase of the Ru content, and showed oxide and alloy characteristics. The relative activities of the PtRuO/Ti electrodes were assessed and compared using half-cell tests and single DMFC experiments. The results showed that these electrodes were very active for the methanol oxidation and that the optimum Ru surface coverage was ca. 38% for a DMFC operating at 20-60 °C. © 2006 Elsevier B.V. PtRu/Ti anodes with varying Pt : Ru ratio were prepared by electrodeposition of a thin PtRu catalyst layer onto Ti mesh for a direct methanol fuel cell (DMFC). The morphology and structure of the catalyst layers were analyzed by SEM, EDX and XRD. The catalyst coating layer shows an alloy character. The relative activities of the PtRu/Ti electrodes were assessed and compared in half cell and single DMFC experiments. The results show that these electrodes are very active for the methanol oxidation and that the optimum Ru surface coverage was ca. 9 at.% for DMFC operating at 20°C and 11 at.% at 60°C.
