Resonance Raman spectroscopy has been used to probe the structures of; tetrakis(1-methylpyridinium-4-yl)-porphinatoiron(III), FeIII (T4MPyP); tetrakis(1-methylpyridium-2-yl)porphinatoiron(III), FeIII (T2MPyP); tetrakis(4-sulphonatophkenyl)porphinatoir(III), FeIII(TSPP); and tetrakis(4-carboxylatophenyl)porphinatoiron(III), FeIII(TCPP), over a wide pH range. The anionic complexes FeIII (TSPP) and FeIII (TCPP) contain high-spin iron(III) at all pHs. Both these complexes exhibit marked spectral changes at ca. pH 6 which correspond to conversion from the diaquo species, in acid solution, to hydroxy- or mu-oxo dimer complexes. Both cationic complexes show similar diaquo to high-spin hydroxy, or mu-oxo dimer, transitions at ca. pH 6. However, at pH > 11.5 for FeIII (T4MPyP) and pH > 9 for FeIII (T2MPyP) a second equilibrium process is observed, leading to two new species. One of these is readily assigned as the low-spin iron(III) dihydroxy complex by analogy with spectra of the dicyano complex. The second species is assigned to the hydroxy iron(II) complex by comparison with photo-chemically generated FeII (T4MPyP) (OH). The formation of iron(II) species in alkaline solutions of FeIII (T4MPyP) and FeIII (T2MPyP) is entirely unexpected and the significance of the observation to previous investigations of the pH-dependent behaviour of these complexes is discussed.

The natural zeolite obtained from the Sivas-Yavu region in Turkey and iron modified forms were studied for the decomposition of N2O and selective catalytic reduction of N2O with NH3. The natural and iron modified zeolites were characterised by XRD, SEM, H-2-TPR, NH3-TPD and low temperature nitrogen sorption. The effect iron loading, precursor and valency on the catalytic performance of catalysts were studied. The catalytic activity of the zeolites increased up to about 7.0 wt.% Fe. Above this value, the activity decreased as a result of a reduction in the surface area and pore volume of the zeolite. The highest catalytic activity was observed using catalysts prepared with FeCl2 due to the formation of more reducible iron species in the zeolites. When FeSO4 was used as the iron precursor, sulphate remained on the surface even after extensive washing resulting in a decrease in the N2O decomposition activity and a shift the N2O reduction temperature to higher values. Since the natural and iron exchanged natural zeolites prepared using FeCl2 have comparable activity with synthetic zeolites, the offer a promising alternative catalyst for the abatement of N2O, particularly for the selective reduction of N2O with NH3. Particulate colloids often occur together with proteins in sewage-impacted water. Using Bovine Serum Albumin (BSA) as a surrogate for protein in sewage, column experiments investigating the capacity of iron-oxide coated sands to remove latex microspheres from water revealed that microsphere attenuation mechanisms depended on antecedent BSA coverage. Dual pulse experiment (DPE) results suggested that where all BSA was adsorbed, subsequent multiple pore volume microsphere breakthrough curves reflected progressively reduced colloid deposition rates with increasing adsorbed BSA content. Modelling colloid responses suggested adsorption of 1 µg BSA generated the same response as blockage by between 7.1x108 and 2.3x109 deposited microspheres. By contrast, microsphere responses in DPEs where BSA coverage of the deposition sites approached/ reached saturation revealed the coated sand maintained a finite capacity to attenuate microspheres, even when incapable of further BSA adsorption. Subsequent microsphere breakthrough curves demonstrated the matrix’s colloid attenuation capacity progressively increased with continued microsphere deposition. Experimental findings suggested BSA adsorption on the sand surface approaching/ reaching saturation generated attractive deposition sites for colloids, which became progressively more attractive with further colloid deposition (filter ripening). Results demonstrate that adsorption of a single type of protein may either enhance or inhibit colloid mobility in saturated porous media.

The aim of our study was to investigate whether intakes of total fat and fat subtypes were associated with esophageal adenocarcinoma (EAC), esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC), gastric cardia or gastric noncardia adenocarcinoma. From 1995–1996, dietary intake data was reported by 494,978 participants of the NIH-AARP cohort. The 630 EAC, 215 ESCC, 454 gastric cardia and 501 gastric noncardia adenocarcinomas accrued to the cohort. Cox proportional hazards regression was used to examine the association between the dietary fat intakes, whilst adjusting for potential confounders. Although apparent associations were observed in energy-adjusted models, multivariate adjustment attenuated results to null [e.g., EAC energy adjusted hazard ratio (HR) and 95% confidence interval (95% CI) 1.66 (1.27–2.18) p for trend <0.01; EAC multivariate adjusted HR (95% CI) 1.17 (0.84–1.64) p for trend 5 0.58]. Similar patterns were also observed for fat subtypes [e.g., EAC saturated fat, energy adjusted HR (95% CI) 1.79 (1.37–2.33) p for trend <0.01; EAC saturated fat, multivariate adjusted HR (95% CI) 1.27 (0.91–1.78) p for trend 5 0.28]. However, in multivariate models an inverse association for polyunsaturated fat (continuous) was seen for EAC in subjects with a body mass index (BMI) in the normal range (18.5–<25 kg/m2) [HR (95% CI) 0.76 (0.63–0.92)], that was not present in overweight subjects [HR (95% CI) 1.04 (0.96–1.14)], or in unstratified analysis [HR (95% CI) 0.97 (0.90–1.05)]. p for interaction 5 0.02. Overall, we found null associations between the dietary fat intakes with esophageal or gastric cancer risk; although a protective effect of polyunsaturated fat intake was seen for EAC in subjects with a normal BMI.

We have demonstrated a self-aligned process to fabricate organized iron nanowires on a planarized surface with wire dimensions down to 50 nm. Polishing was used to expose an alternating silicon silicon dioxide edge and a dual selective metal deposition process produced the nanowires. The initial selective deposition produced a tungsten layer on the exposed polysilicon regions. The discovery that selective chemical vapor deposition of iron from Fe(CO)(5) precursor on dielectric surfaces over tungsten surfaces is the key factor that enables the self-alignment of the iron nanowires. Dimensions of the wires are determined by the thickness of the thermal oxide. (c) 2007 The Electrochemical Society.

We have cloned chromosomal genes determining the aerobactin iron transport system from the Escherichia coli K1 strain VW187. Mapping and hybridization experiments showed that the VW187 aerobactin region was identical to that of the plasmid ColV-K30. However, in the E. coli K-12 background, the biosynthesis of both siderophore and ferric aerobactin receptor encoded by the VW187-derived recombinant plasmids was not repressed by iron to the same extent found when a recombinant plasmid derived from pColV-K30 was used. RNA-DNA dot-blot hybridization experiments demonstrated that the aerobactin-specific mRNA synthesized by the VW187-derived clones was not iron regulated in E. coli K-12. In contrast, the synthesis of aerobactin and its receptor in strain VW187 was completely repressed by iron regardless of whether the recombinant plasmids originated from VW187 or pColV-K30. Similar results were obtained with gene fusions in which a promoterless lac operon was placed under the control of aerobactin promoter regions of either chromosome- or plasmid-mediated aerobactin systems. DNA sequencing of the chromosomal aerobactin promoter region showed changes in bases located immediately upstream to the -35 region compared with the corresponding region in pColV-K30, which is known to be part of the binding site for the Fur repressor protein.

We have investigated the presence of the aerobactin system and the location of the aerobactin genes in enteroinvasive strains of Escherichia coli. Also, we cloned the aerobactin region and its flanking sequences from the chromosome of a strain of Shigella flexneri and compared the molecular organization of the aerobactin genes in the two genera. Of the 11 enteroinvasive E. coli strains studied, 5 possessed the aerobactin genes, which were located on the chromosome in each case. These strains produced and utilized aerobactin and also were susceptible to the bacteriocin cloacin-DF13. Restriction endonuclease mapping and hybridization experiments showed that the regions corresponding to the aerobactin-specific sequences were very similar in both enteroinvasive E. coli and S. flexneri. However, differences were found in the region corresponding to the aerobactin receptor gene. The regions flanking the aerobactin system in enteroinvasive E. coli and S. flexneri exhibited some similarities but were different from those in pColV-K30. Under iron-limiting conditions, aerobactin-producing enteroinvasive E. coli and S. flexneri synthesized outer-membrane proteins of 76 and 77 kDa, respectively, which cross-reacted immunologically with rabbit antiserum raised against the 74 kDa pColV-K30-encoded ferric aerobactin receptor.

The incidence of the aerobactin system and the genetic location of aerobactin genes were investigated in Escherichia coli K1 neonatal isolates belonging to different clonal groups. A functional aerobactin system was found in all members of the O7 MP3, O1 MP5, O1 MP9, and O18 MP9 clonal groups examined and also in K1 strains having O6, O16, and O75 lipopolysaccharide types, which are less frequently associated with neonatal infections. In contrast, the aerobactin system was not detected in strains from the O18 MP6 clone. The combined results of plasmid and colony hybridization experiments showed that the aerobactin genes were located on the chromosome in the majority (75%) of the aerobactin-producing K1 isolates, the genetic location of the aerobactin genes was closely correlated with the outer membrane protein profile rather than the O lipopolysaccharide type, the K1 strains harboring a chromosome-mediated aerobactin system did not possess colicin V genes, and five of six K1 isolates possessing a plasmid-borne aerobactin system contained colicin V genes which were located on the same plasmids carrying the aerobactin genes. The comparison of hemolysin production with possession of the aerobactin system in virulent clones of E. coli K1 strains showed that all of the aerobactin-producing strains from the O18 MP9 and O7 MP3 clonal groups did not synthesize hemolysin, whereas 11 of 12 aerobactin-nonproducing O18 MP6 isolates were hemolytic. Of the K1 strains examined, 92.5% possessed either the aerobactin system or the ability to produce hemolysin or both.
