Progress in the theoretical understanding of non-sequential double-ionization of atoms is reviewed from its beginnings with Kuchiev's work in the late 1980s and Corkum's work in the early 1990s to the present day. The crucial role of laboratory experiment as a persistent stimulus to theoretical endeavour is underlined but the predictive roles of simple, yet fundamental, theory and also of a full quantum mechanical description are not forgotten. A theoretical forward look is provided.

We report a new method which allows sequential and non-sequential double-ionization rates in laser-driven helium to be distinguished and calculated separately. The method is applied to calculate such rates for two laser pulses, one of 0.236 au frequency and 8.0 × 1015 W cm-2 peak intensity, the other of 1.0 au frequency and also of 8.0 × 1015 W cm-2 peak intensity.

The generation of an entangled coherent state is one of the most important ingredients of quantum information processing using coherent states. Recently, numerous schemes to achieve this task have been proposed. In order to generate travelling-wave entangled coherent states, cross-phase-modulation, optimized by optical Kerr effect enhancement in a dense medium in an electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) regime, seems to be very promising. In this scenario, we propose a fully quantized model of a double-EIT scheme recently proposed [D. Petrosyan and G. Kurizki, Phys. Rev. A 65, 33 833 (2002)]: the quantization step is performed adopting a fully Hamiltonian approach. This allows us to write effective equations of motion for two interacting quantum fields of light that show how the dynamics of one field depends on the photon-number operator of the other. The preparation of a Schrodinger cat state, which is a superposition of two distinct coherent states, is briefly exposed. This is based on nonlinear interaction via double EIT of two light fields (initially prepared in coherent states) and on a detection step performed using a 50:50 beam splitter and two photodetectors. In order to show the entanglement of an entangled coherent state, we suggest to measure the joint quadrature variance of the field. We show that the entangled coherent states satisfy the sufficient condition for entanglement based on quadrature variance measurement. We also show how robust our scheme is against a low detection efficiency of homodyne detectors.

The new ammonium iodomercurates(II), (NH4)(7)[HgI4](2)[Hg2I7](H2O) (1) and (NH4)(3)[Hg2I7] (2) contain isolated tetrahedra and vertex-sharing double tetrahedra as the anions. The crystal structures were determined from single-crystal X-ray diffraction data: 1: orthorhombic, Pnma (no. 62), a = 2175.9(2), b = 1781.8(2), c = 1256.2(2) pm, Z = 4. R-1 [I-0 > 2 sigma(I-0)] = 0.0520; 2: monoclinic, P2(1)/c (no. 14), a = 1259.0(2), b = 773.2(1), c = 2172.4(3) pm, beta = 101.18(2)degrees, Z = 4, R, [I-0 > 2 sigma(I-0)] = 0.0308.

Phosphonates are characterized by a stable carbon-phosphorus bond and commonly occur as lipid conjugates in invertebrate cell membranes. Phosphonoacetate hydrolase encoded by the phnA gene, catalyses the cleavage of phosphonoacetate to acetate and phosphate. In this study, we demonstrate the unusually high phnA diversity in coral-associated bacteria. The holobiont of eight coral species tested positive when screened for phnA using degenerate primers. In two soft coral species, Sinularia and Discosoma, sequencing of the phnA gene showed 13 distinct groups on the basis of 90% sequence identity across 100% of the sequence. A total of 16 bacterial taxa capable of using phosphonoacetate as the sole carbon and phosphorus source were isolated; 8 of which had a phnA+ genotype. This study enhances our understanding of the wide taxonomic and environmental distribution of phnA, and highlights the importance of phosphonates in marine ecosystems. CAN 122:105736 AN 1995:237497 CAPLUS (Copyright (C) 2009 ACS on SciFinder (R)) Abstract A novel biotransformation system for the redn. of carbon-carbon double bonds in 5-benzylidenethiazolidine-2,4-diones to give the corresponding 5-benzylthiazolidine-1,4-diones, using whole cells of red yeasts, is described. These reduced compds., which are recovered in good yield, are of potential use in the treatment of non-insulin dependent diabetes mellitus. The mild reaction conditions developed allow redn. of 5-benzylidenethiazolidine-2,4-diones contg. other functionalities which are not compatible with alternative redn. methods. The biocatalytic redn. is enantioselective and the synthesis of R-(+)-5-(4-{2-[methyl(2-pyridyl)amino]ethoxy}benzyl)thiazolidine-2,4-dione by Rhodotorula rubra CBS 6469 and structure confirmation by X-ray crystallog. is detailed. Optimization of reaction conditions (including immobilization) for these whole cell redn. system is described.

The induction and rejoining of radiation-induced double-strand breaks (DSBs) in cells of six bladder tumor cell lines (T24, UM-UC3, TCC-SUP, RT112, J82, HT1376) were measured using the neutral comet assay. Radiation dose-response curves (0-60 Gy) showed damage (measured as mean tail moment) for five of the cell lines in the same rank order as cell survival (measured over 0-10 Gy), with the least damage in the most radioresistant cell line. Damage induction correlated well with clonogenic survival at high doses (SF10) for all six cell lines. At the clinically relevant dose of 2 Gy, correlation was good for four cell lines but poor for two (TCC-SUP and T24), The rejoining process had a fast and slow component for all cell lines. The rate of these two components of DNA repair did not correlate with cell survival. However, the time taken to reduce the amount of DNA damage to preirradiated control levels correlated positively with cell survival at 10 Gy but not 2 Gy; radioresistant cells rejoined the induced DSBs to preirradiation control levels more quickly than the radiosensitive cells. Although the results show good correlation between SF10 and DSBs for all six cell lines, the lack of correlation with SF2 for TCC-SUP and T24 cells would suggest that a predictive test should be carried out at the clinically relevant dose. At present the neutral comet assay cannot achieve this. (C) 2000 by Radiation Research Society.

Ensuring that all graduates are able to exploit new technologies is a primary goal of all UK universities and a variety of assumptions have underpinned policies designed to promote this goal, This paper explores some of these assumptions through the findings of a. longitudinal study involving a cohort of over 800 university students. The study adopted a student perspective to examine the factors affecting their use of computers over a three year period. Unsurprisingly, the results indicated that situational factors (e.g. access, training and time) influence the extent to which students use computers, but a disparity was found in the importance attributed to these factors by the academic staff, who focused on the needs of their department, and by the students, who focused on their individual needs. Results suggest that increased attention to a student perspective may lead to improved strategic planning in students' use of computers.
