Phytoplankton biomass and rate of production were measured along a transect from 57.54 degreesN to 37.01 degreesN in the northeast Atlantic during July 1996 and at a series of stations over a 7-day period at 37 degreesN 20 degreesW. Surface nutrient concentrations ranged from 4 mu mol l(-1) NO3-, and 0.35 mu mol l(-1) PO43- at 57.54 degreesN to <10 nmol l(-1) NO3- and similar to 10 nmol l(-1) PO43- at 37.01 degreesN. The greatest phytoplankton biomass and production were measured in the vicinity of a frontal system at 50 degreesN, and there was a general decline in total phytoplankton biomass and production to the south of the transect. Production was measured in three size fractions. At the station with the highest chlorophyll concentrations (50.34 degreesN), phytoplankton cells larger than 5 mum dominated the assemblage, accounting for 72% of the chlorophyll concentration (22.9 mg m(-2)) and 51% of primary production (54.1 mmol Cm-2 d(-1)), but picophytoplankton production was also high (43%). At 57 degreesN, carbon fixation by the > 5 mum fraction accounted for 75% of the daily production of 60.75 mmol Cm-2 d(-1). At 37 degreesN, picophytoplankton was the dominant group, accounting for similar to 58% (10 mg m(-2)) of chlorophyll and similar to 64% (46 mmol Cm-2 d(-1)), of primary production. Nitrate, ammonium and phosphate uptake rates also were determined. Although high nitrate uptake rates were measured in the surface water at similar to 50 degreesN, the greatest uptake rates of both depth-integrated nitrate and ammonium were at the south of the transect. At 37 degreesN, a deep euphotic zone was present and light penetrated through the nitracline; total nitrate uptake was enhanced because of assimilation at the base of the euphotic zone. As a consequence, high values of depth-integrated f-ratio were measured in the oligotrophic waters at the south of the transect. Phosphate was predominantly incorporated into the picoplankton fraction, which included heterotrophic and autotrophic components, at all stations and a significant proportion of phosphate uptake occurred in the dark. The C:N:P assimilation ratios were variable throughout the region; phosphate uptake was generally greater than would be expected if nutrient assimilation were in proportion to the Redfield ratio. For the first time, the coupling of fast transient kinetic switching and the use of an isotopically labelled reactant (15NO) has allowed detailed analysis of the evolution of all the products and reactants involved in the regeneration of a NOx storage reduction (NSR) material. Using realistic regeneration times (ca. 1 s) for Pt, Rh and Pt/Rh-containing Ba/Al2O3 catalysts we have revealed an unexpected double peak in the evolution of nitrogen. The first peak occurred immediately on switching from lean to rich conditions, while the second peak started at the point at which the gases switched from rich to lean. The first evolution of nitrogen occurs as a result of the fast reaction between H2 and/or CO and NO on reduced Rh and/or Pt sites. The second N2 peak which occurs upon removal of the rich phase can be explained by reaction of stored ammonia with stored NOx, gas phase NOx or O2. The ammonia can be formed either by hydrolysis of isocyanates or by direct reaction of NO and H2.

The study highlights the importance of the relative rates of regeneration and storage in determining the overall performance of the catalysts. The performance of the monometallic 1.1%Rh/Ba/Al2O3 catalyst at 250 and 350 °C was found to be dependent on the rate of NOx storage, since the rate of regeneration was sufficient to remove the NOx stored in the lean phase. In contrast, for the monometallic 1.6%Pt/Ba/Al2O3 catalyst at 250 °C, the rate of regeneration was the determining factor with the result that the amount of NOx stored on the catalyst deteriorated from cycle to cycle until the amount of NOx stored in the lean phase matched the NOx reduced in the rich phase. On the basis of the ratio of exposed metal surface atoms to total Ba content, the monometallic 1.6%Pt/Ba/Al2O3 catalyst outperformed the Rh-containing catalysts at 250 and 350 °C even when CO was used as a reductant.

The voltammetry and kinetics of the Ag vertical bar Ag+ system (commonly used as a reference electrode material in both protic/aprotic and RTIL solvents) was studied in the room-temperature ionic liquid N-butyl-N-methylpyrrolidinium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide, [C(4)mpyrr][NTf2] on a 10 mu m diameter Pt electrode. For the three silver salts investigated (AgOTf, AgNTf2, and AgNO3, where OTf- = trifluoromethanesulfonate, NTf2- = bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide, and NO3- = nitrate), the voltammetry gave rise to a redox couple characteristic of a

The occurrence of the fuel oxygenate methyl tert-butyl ether (MTBE) in the environment has received considerable scientific attention. The pollutant is frequently found in the groundwater due to leaking of underground storage tanks or pipelines. Concentrations of more than several mg/L MTBE were detected in groundwater at several places in the US and Germany in the last few years. In situ chemical oxidation is a promising treatment method for MTBE-contaminated plumes. This research investigated the reaction kinetics for the oxidation of MTBE by permanganate. Batch tests demonstrated that the oxidation of MTBE by permanganate is second order overall and first order individually with respect to permanganate and MTBE. The second-order rate constant was 1.426 x 10(-6) L/mg/h. The influence of pH on the reaction rate was demonstrated to have no significant effect. However, the rate of MTBE oxidation by potassium permanganate is 2-3 orders of magnitude lower than of other advanced oxidation processes. The slower rates of MTBE oxidation by permanganate limit the applicability of this process for rapid MTBE cleanup strategies. However, permanganate oxidation of MTBE has potential for passive oxidation risk management strategies. (C) 2002 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.

The C-H activation on metal oxides is a fundamental process in chemistry. In this paper, we report a density functional theory study on the process of the C-H activation of CH4 on Pd(111), Pt(111), Ru(0001), Tc(0001), Cu(111), PdO(001), PdO(110), and PdO(100). A linear relationship between the C-H activation barrier and the chemisorption in the dissociation final state on the metal surfaces is obtained, which is consistent with the work in the literature. However, the relationship is poor on the metal oxide surfaces. Instead, a strong linear correlation between the barrier and the lattice O-H bond strength is found on the oxides. The new linear relationship is analyzed and the physical origin is identified. (c) 2008 American Institute of Physics.

The kinetics of the water-gas shift reaction Were Studied on a 0.2% Pt/CeO2 catalyst between 177 and 300 degrees C over a range of CO and steam pressures. A rate decrease with increasing partial pressure of CO was experimentally observed over this sample, confirming that a negative order in CO can occur under certain conditions at low temperatures. The apparent reaction order of CO measured at 197 degrees C was about -0.27. This value is significantly larger than that (i.e, -0.03) reported by Ribeiro and co-workers [A.A. Phatak, N. Koryabkina, S. Rai, J.L. Ratts, W. Ruettinger, R.J. Farrauto, G.E. Blau, W.N. Delgass, F.H. Ribeiro, Catal. Today 123 (2007) 224] at a similar temperature. A kinetic peculiarity was also evidenced, i.e. a maximum of the reaction rate as a function of the CO concentration or possibly a kinetic break, which is sometimes observed in the oxidation of simple molecules. These observations support the idea that competitive adsorption of CO and H2O play an essential role in the reaction mechanism. (C) 2008 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
