Polymer extrusion is one of the major methods of processing polymer materials and advanced process monitoring is important to ensure good product quality. However, commonly used process monitoring devices, e.g. temperature and pressure sensors, are limited in providing information on process dynamics inside an extruder barrel. Screw load torque dynamics, which may occur due to changes in solids conveying, melting, mixing, melt conveying, etc., are believed to be a useful indicator of process fluctuations inside the extruder barrel. However, practical measurement of the screw load torque is difficult to achieve. In this work, inferential monitoring of the screw load torque signal in an extruder was shown to be possible by monitoring the motor current (armature and/or field) and simulation studies were used to check the accuracy of the proposed method. The ability of this signal to aid identification and diagnosis of process issues was explored through an experimental investigation. Power spectral density and wavelet frequency analysis were implemented together with a covariance analysis. It was shown that the torque signal is dominated by the solid friction in the extruder and hence it did not correlate well with melting fluctuations. However, it is useful for online identification of solids conveying issues.

The 5'-O-monomethoxytrityl-3'-S-(aryldisulfanyl)-3'-deoxythymidines 7 and 8 have been prepared by the reaction of 5'-O-monomethoxytrityl-3'-thiothymidine with the appropriate arenesulfenyl chloride. These disulfides undergo a Michaelis–Arbusov reaction with simple trialkyl phosphites to yield 5'-O-monomethoxytrityl-3'-thiothymidin-3'-yl O,O-dialkyl phosphorothiolates. More interestingly, 3'-deoxy-3'-S-(2, 4-dinitrophenylsulfanyl)-5'-O-monomethoxytritylthymidine 8 reacts with a variety of thymidin-5'-yl dialkyl phosphites to give dithymidine phosphorothiolate triesters with the phosphorothiolate group protected with either a methyl or a 2-cyanoethyl group. 3'-O-(tert-Butyldimethylsilyl)thymidin-5'-yl triethylammoniumphosphonate 17 is converted into the corresponding bis-(O-trimethylsilyl) phosphite by treatment with bis(trimethylsilyl)trifluoroacetamide. in situ Reaction of this phosphate with disulfide 8 gives, after work-up, the dithymidine phosphorothiolate diester directly. Methylation of compound 17 with methyl chloromethanoate, followed by silylation and subsequent reaction with disulfide 8, gives the methyl-protected dithymidine phosphorothiolate triester.

Immersed shannies (Blennius pholis) showed peak locomotory activity coincident with daylight high tides. Emersion caused cessation of breathing and bradycardia though Q02 was little affected. Q02 fell, however, when the abdomen was enclosed in an impermeable sheath to block cutaneous respiration. Gulping of air into the extensively vascular oesophagus probably also acts as a means of aerial respiration. Reimmersion of fish caused a transient bradycardia followed by a tachycardia and a fall in Q02 followed subsequently by a rise. The results are discussed in relation to the behavioural, circulatory, respiratory and morphological adaptations of the shanny to the intertidal habitat.

A sheep trial was performed to evaluate two diagnostic assays, a faecal egg count reduction test (FECRT) and a coproantigen reduction test (CRT), for the diagnosis of resistance of Fasciola hepatica to triclabendazole (TCBZ). The FECRT defines successful TCBZ treatment as a 95% or greater reduction in fluke faecal egg counts (FECs) at 14 days post-treatment (dpt). The CRT defines effective TCBZ treatment as faeces negative for Fasciola coproantigens at 14 dpt, as measured by the commercial BIO K201 coproantigen ELISA (Bio-X Diagnostics, Jemelle, Belgium).

A sheep trial was performed to standardise a coproantigen reduction test (CRT) protocol for the diagnosis of resistance to triclabendazole (TCBZ) in Fasciola hepatica). The CRT employs the BIO K201 Fasciola coproantigen ELISA (Bio-X Diagnostics, Jemelle, Belgium) to test for the presence of F. hepatica coproantigens in a faecal sample. If it is coproantigen-positive, the CRT protocol recommends that faecal samples are re-tested for coproantigens at 14 days post-treatment (dpt), with negative testing at this point indicating TCBZ success.
